I am having a similar problem. I have seemingly isolated the problem to
occuring when I try to change resolutions. I was trying to get my 3dfx
card to work and the mouse crapped out. you need to find the right
resolution and the mouse will return to normal. i am still looking for a
fix but have not found one

Subject: xhost +: where do I put this?
Date: Tue, 15 Aug 2000 22:18:23 -0400
I've setup up RHL 6.1 to automatically start into X-Windows on boot
(runlevel 5). However, I want the command "xhost +" to run automatically so
that the user accounts on the system do not have to all manually execute
their own "xhost +" on login, either from within individual login scripts or
by being forced to type it at a shell prompt. Is there some common script
that gets executed for all logins in which "xhost +" can be placed, or is
there some X-Windows initialization script that gets run during X's
initialization where it can be placed? Ideally, I'd also hope that this
script would execute if I ever launched X-Windows via "startx" should I boot
into some terminal-screen runlevel.
Context of this problem is I'm setting up kppp (KDE ppp front-end for pppd),
and I got everything working...except that joe user needs to type "xhost +"
before launching kppp since kppp runs with root permissions, and X's
authentication seems to get stuck on this without "xhost +" being in place.
TIA.

You could try linuxconf if you're brave... it crashed the os for me, but
actually worked on reboot.

You don't need to bootup in windows; just use the linux bootdisk and
do the install into the 2nd drive. There are a couple of things that need
to be done to the drive prior to the actual install of the system and that
is having linux do the fdisk for the 2nd drive for partitioning.
As for lilo; it depends on what "windows" you are running, winnt or
win9x? For nt4, you need to get a copy of bootpart 2.2 to help do the
dual boot (makes it easier) using the nt boot loader; and lilo would be
installed on the the root partition of the 2nd drive.
For win9x, one could use lilo in the mbr provided that it was configured
to allow selection of win9x to boot. Someone had made a version of
boot loader like the "system commander" software where one could select
the os to boot (this would require the lilo to be installed in the
root partition of the 2nd drive.
There may be some stuff in the "www.linuxdocs.org" site HOWTOs to help.

If you make a boot floppy, you don't need to worry about using lilo or
another boot loader. Its a little slower on boot up, but its safer IMO.
BTW: Anyone install mandrake 7.1 and choose not to install a boot loader?

No Carrier usually means that there wasn't a modem on the other end of
the line. Verify the phone number, and try to dial it "manually"
using minicom to see if you can connect.

$HOME/.xinitrc and $HOME/.xsession run every time X11 is started up
normally.

If you're running an RPM distribution, you can check:
rpm -qa | grep -i xfree
Make sure /usr/X11R6/bin is in your $PATH as well.

If .vimrc is following the rules of .exrc then the
command is set, not se. Also, you do not put in the
colon. The commands would look like:
set ignorecase
set number
etc.....

Before I bag it and go back to 3.3.whatever, can anyone
help.......I've spent too much time already trying to debug
this.
xdm/kdm/gdm no longer work - the graphical login displays,
and after entering id/password the screen flickers and just
goes right back to the login prompt. (if I enter a bad
id/password, it does tell me that). I'm sure there is an
error log somewhere - where? using gdm, I've tried
selecting different sessions - same problem. I also tried
editing the .xsession file but that didn't do anything.
I can start kde and/or gnome OK if use startx with the exec
startkde or gnome-session in the .xinirc, but there are
still some anoying problems...
1) Missing apps - xminicom, xterm. I thought I included
all of the packages.
2) When I start a terminal session, it just hangs there for
about a minute before I get a command prompt. Says
something terminal 0 already started.
BTW, I'm running slackaware 7.1 with kernel 2.2.16
Thanks in advance

Reply-To: "Jimmy Lee" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
I have some questions about the hardware setup with RedHat Linux 6.2. Here
is my hardware configuration.
Mainborad: Abit BE6-II (w/High point 366 UDMA 66 ver.)
CPU: Pentium III 500MHz (FC-PGA w/Abit Slocket)
RAM: KingMax PC133 128MB
Hard disk: IBM UDMA 66 20MB (connected at UDMA Primary Master channel,
choose as second boot device in bios)
CD-Rom: 50x IDE (conneted at IDE Primary Master channel, choose as third
boot device in bios)
Display: nVidia TNT Vanta 8MB
Sound Card: Creative PCI 128 Vibar
LAN Card: 3COM 3C905C-TX
MODEM: ZOOM dual mode external
Others: Floppy drive, Keyboard, Mouse, 15" CRT Monitor
My questions are:
1. I cannot install the RH6.2 with floppy boot disk. In the screen choose
setup options (Server, Workstatiom, Custom ...), the installation program
says it cannot find any disk device (forgot the message, but I guess missing
the UDMA driver) to instll.
2. I cannot config my nVidia Nanta (8MB, AGP) version to work with any X
environment.
3. I cannot config my sound card to work with any Linux. I can locate the
information about the sound card under Turbo Linux KDE config/PCI
inofmration (IRQ 11, I/O 0xc800). The sound card is using the Creative
chipset.
Thanks for your help in advance.

Hi everyone,
Im in the process of setting up a permanent modem connection using PPP
and intend to configure it with an inittab entry to respawn the ppp
connection should it go down.
What I cant work out is how to configure it so that it only respawns a
set number of times.
The reason I want this is to prevent it redialling thousands of times
in the even that my service providers system is down.
Any ideas?

Set it up as a TNT2. Or if you want you can set it up with XFree86 4.0
(instead of 3.3.6) with this doc:
http://www.linuxnewbie.org/nhf/intel/distros/mandrake/mdk_nvidia.html
This is how I got it set up on my box.

Probably didn't load the X RPMs. I believe that the server option assumes you
want to run a server with out X (less memory use)
