Both XFree86 4.0, and 3.3.6 are in M 7.1. I believe to use 4.0 you have to do
an expert install.

If you've already installed it 'X -version' will tell you. If not,
you should check the ftp servers.

Subject: Re: Linux for Windows

Guys,
My problems just got terrible. After I reinstalled Windows 98 SE, I also
installed System Commander 2000 to partition my hard drive (1). I did the
partitions. I came to the stage to specify the mount with a "/" for the
Linux native with a 1 G partition. The Linux swap was okay. But I was also
prompted to allow a root which I did with another partition "/root". I set
the partition, manually to 64 Mb. I did proceed with the installation but
it looked that my 1 G partition was all used up. However, when I check that
partition, it showed empty! However, my swap file looked like it was filled
to overcapacity.
Never mind, I did a boot with the specs of SC2000. I couldn't, so I tried
placing boot.dat in the root of my directory in Windows. Still a missing
operating system for Linux.
Any suggestions? Or, does Windows 98SE have some hidden peculiar thing?
Thank you for any help.
Regards.

Sorry for the second reply, but I have looked through the Perl
script that is a supposed 'Trojan'. It is not a Trojan Horse, it
looked like familiar bad code, and it was. It is a 3 line RSA
encryption program written in Perl. It is also broken and pretty
much about the worst code I have ever seen (that is taking into
account the fact that it is obfuscated as well). In other words,
there is no reason to fear that Perl snippet, and you have just
wasted a tremendous amount of bandwidth.

There is a programming language called expect which is good

However, don't use rsh due to security concerns. You can use
ssh (check out the OpenBSD project's free OpenSSH project at

Subject: No eth0 device on Linux Server
Date: Sun, 20 Aug 2000 07:29:31 GMT
I am trying to set up a Linux server for my home network using RedHat 6.0.
My NIC is not working. Checking dmesg I found that the network interface
failed because no eth0 device could be found. My original NIC was a
NetGear FA310TX. I swapped this card with a SMC 1211TX from my Windows 98
system. This did not help. Both cards show up in Linuxconf as Kernel
Module tulip.0, originally developed by DEC. It appears that this is
supported by RedHat.
I am no Guru, but I have worked with Unix for many years, even did some
Sysadmin work. I decided to check the /dev directory and found that the
eth0 device file was missing, in fact there were no eth_ files at all.
There many device files in this directory that are not present in my
system, but they are there if I need them. I feel that I need the eth0
device file.
Everything else seems to have set up OK, even NFS was built. For this
reason, I have been hesitant to start over with the installation, but I
will if someone can give me a clue as to what went wrong with the first
install. I will greatly appreciate the help that anyone can provide.

Subject: svga virtual resolution
Date: 20 Aug 2000 07:40:49 GMT
Hi all,
I wanted some extra video memory for my old Dell Optiplex computer, so
bought an STB NVidia card with 16mb from Dell. I'm having trouble getting
it to display the entire desktop at one time. The following Screen
section of XF86Config is very similar to the one I used to use with my S3
and the accel server, but doesn't work with the svga server and my new
card.
Can anyone point out what is wrong? I'm expecting a virtual resolution of
1024x768 so the whole desktop shows, but I get the same results regardless
of whether the Virtual 1024 768 line is present or absent. I can pan to
the off-screen portion of the desktop, but don't find this convenient.
Thanks in advance for any help you might offer.

I'm surprised, unless the Modes line was dissimilar ...

The first mode in the Modes line is the default one for startup. Change
your Modes line above to be:
Modes "1024x768" "640x480" "800x600"
... or something like that. Alternatively, you could use Ctrl-Alt-Num+
and Ctrl-Alt-Num- to change resolution, but I admit that that's a pain.

Yes. Roughly comparable, when you're creating the ext2 filesystem, you
(can, I think the default is 4kB) specify a blocksize. mkfs, (actually
smaller programs underneath taht, and you might only see the script
"program" using it), then calculates the number of inodes that is
required, assuming all files are 4 kB. Statistics say, you have to aim
for the average. If I remember right the inodes are 128 bytes, and
support something like 12 blocks, but always for one file only. Don't
worry, there is a string along trick for more blocks.
Three of those stringtricks, can result in the famous 4 TByte maximum
ext2fs file size.
With df and df -i, you can find the % used blocks and inodes. If they
differ widely, you might run out of blocks, with plenty 128 B inodes
left. Or vice verse, wich is even worse, cause the blocks are, for
example 4 KB. And anyways, per file you loose 2 kB on the average.
So say, a webserver may be better of with 1 kB blocks, And the
database system of a large corporation may need 16 kB blocks. So ext2
has more than just vfat and no-vfat (oh, and the PC-DOS floppy-fat).
If itis not so extreme this space and access time cost maybe only
10-20%, and MB's are cheap and quick these days.
On top of that. The boring ("maximum number of mounts..") ext2fs
checks take time, proportional to the square of the number of inodes!
Which is quite a long time on a 20 GB drive with all 4 kB blocks. So
two halfsize partitions, all other factors the same, spend together
half the time checking, compared with a a single one. And again half,
per occurence. Just when you're in a hurry to start.
And if somebody messes up one partition, it is nicer if it is a small
one to restore. It is likely, that when /home blows up, you get away
with just restoring just the boss, then the users that were working on
that moment, then the absent ones, and then the somebody who did it.
That is usually something like 100 MB per user, minutes restore time
per user.
Besides program partions don't get much written to, they are unlikely
to get crashed. You have to restore those too in the one big disk
approach. From one (big) tape?. Or from the source CD/DVD's?

If I understand this right... First, try brining up the interface
'ifconfig eth0 up' Second make sure you have 'alias tulip.o eth0' (or
similar) in /etc/conf.modules for theif you used modules. Run 'ifconfig'
to see the active interfaces. Then post results.

Subject: XFree86 4.0.1 XF86Config file help for mach64 laptop
Date: Sun, 20 Aug 2000 02:09:49 -0700
The file seems to load fine except for the 'no screens found' error.
How do I correct this? I have manned XF86Config, XFree86
I have used XFree86Setup to make the file originally.
Whenever I try to run xvidtune from the app, I get a float_child_error
(or similar) error and requests a stack trace.
I installed the binaries, using Xinstall.sh. All options are correct as
far as I can tell chipset, driver and etc. (it is a ATI 3D Rage LT PRO
8MB 2X AGP).
The X server works but the file is the impediment. I use RH6.1 btw.
Any guesses? Merci beaucoup.
