Subject: Problem compiling tulip.c driver for Linksys LNE100TX ethernet card
Date: Sun, 20 Aug 2000 01:21:25 GMT

        I run Debian Gnu/Linux, stock kernel 2.2.17pre6. I have
kernel source installed, and a soft link /usr/src/linux to the
kernel source. I have a Linksys LNE100TX PNP PCI ethernet card
and DSL connection. For linux, I tried the precompiled module tulip.o,
but the card was not recognized. I downloaded the current tulip.c test
driver for this card, and got compile errors that
linux/modversions.h, pci-scan.h, and kern_compat.h were missing.
So I got modversions.h from the kernel-headers, put it in
/usr/src/linux/include/linux. I got pci-scan.h and kern_compat.h from
www.scyld.com. In the driver file, tulip.c, both pci-scan.h and
kern_compat.h were #include with quotes, and I thought this meant look
in the current directory, so put them in the directory with tulip.c

Now I get errors that kern_compat.h and
linux/modversions.h (pci-scan.h no longer noted).
I have limited experience compiling, and have read any
number of references on this card and driver, and am stumped. Anyone
have any suggestions?

Here is my question:

Suppose you want to change your Linux Server to another box with a different
linux ditribution. How can one make sure there would be consistency in the
way that passwords are encrpted, so old users do not have difficulty
logining to the new machine. Assuming you just copy /etc/passwd from the
old box to the new machine?
Also how one change a linux system using shadow passwords to the case where
there is no shadowing?

Thanks in advance for your input

This is a very standard setup, using a linux box to firewall for a small
home network on RR. Im posting from just such a setup now. You need to
enable IP forwarding and then set up IP masquerading. The precise steps
vary from distribution to distribution, but for the big picture consult
the IP Masquerading how-to, which is available from a variety of sites
including www.linux.org

What kernel are you running?

2.4.0-test?

How long does it take to build a new kernel from scratch "make clean"?

Why not try using rsh, or rlogon. They are a better solution IMHO.

Picked up a Linux bargain at my local CompUSA Yesterday. Corel Linux
Deluxe boxed set for $4.99, usual price $49.99. Went back Today to
get some more and SUPRISE SUPRISE, they had sold out! Store Manager
said they sold over 250 copies Yesterday!!

Looks like I am gonna get rid of my WinLinux and get Corel loaded next
week. Anyone have any comments on Corel Linux ?

Thanks In Advance

Here is what I did just this afternoon. I have a redhat 6.2 system which
does a few things for me. I have a system with a SiS card integrated on the
board which had some annoying characteristics under the default Xfree86 that
ships with RH. I downloaded the Xinstall.sh script and ran the test
parameter as it says on the website and then just let it blast with the
binaries it told me I needed. The first time I did not understand I needed
to use the new xf86config utility so re-installed again. I then ran the
updated configuration file, setup my SiS card, and tried things. I had to
monkey (still) with the XF86Config file but finally got things working quite
well. On the positive side, Xfree86 4.0.1 or whatever seems quite stable to
me here. The fonts and display definitely look better.

My RedHat system is a play system to me so I just try things on it for the
heck of it.

I got the exact same thing. But I believe it started when I moved
from Win95 to Win98SE on the 'other' partition. I figured it was a
Win-problem of having the hardware in some odd state.

I moved the Dark Side of my machine from Win95 to Win98SE back
around Christmas or New Years. I don't know exactly when I moved
to RedHat 6.2 - it might have been about the same time.
