Gene Heskett sends Greetings to Michael Perry;
Be aware that its a show-stopper if your video card is a Permedia-2.
Apparently ONLY 3.3.6 works with those cards. I wasted a week trying
the beta redhat that uses it, any attempt to do anything with x results
in a locked machine, with the reset button the only way out.

I remember seeing both an "extract" and an "extract.exe" file on that page
at their ftp site. Did you just get the extract one? My redhat system was
upgraded successfully from the following files:
-rw-rw-r-- 1 mperry mperry 3744965 Aug 19 09:54 Xbin.tgz

Does this look like what you have? I also downloaded a few "extra" things I
wanted on this system. I don't remember doing the gnu-tar thing so the
installer must add that as it works.

Subject: For An Easy-To-Setup File/Print Server, Think NetMAX....
Date: Sun, 20 Aug 2000 12:16:57 -0400
Not to start a distro flamewar, but in looking at the NG for
answers to my own probs, I've noticed posts from many who're
having trouble setting up file/print servers under Linux. Take a
look at http://netmax.com/ for a suite of Internet appliances that
make Linux server an absolute breeze to setup and maintain. I've setup
six in the past three months and am thoroughly impressed w/ the
results in real-world, paying situations. Agreed, one may've already
purchased a Linux distro, but if your time and sanity means something
to you, you can bite the bullet and buy something for about 40-90
buks that will make your life easier. Once operational, you administer
the system w/ your web browser and never see the command line, unless
you *want* to.
NetMAX is based on the RedHat distro and one can boot it from its
CD, answer a half-dozen questions, and you're operational in less
than 30 mins ! No mucking w/ .conf files or knowing anything about
Linux itself (altho I *do* consider myself to be a novice-intermediate
Linux hack.) NetMAX has a series of these Linux/Internet appliance
products (altho I can only vouch for the File Server) that might be
what some of you are looking for. I've customized it, to add the
PostgreSQL database server, by d/l'g and installing the RPMs (also
managed from the web browser.) Adding HP's JetDirect printers was also
a piece of cake.
Anyway, take a look as you might like what you see. Their manuals
are also available (for free) in PDF form....Jet

Ian: Out of curiosity, are you using the IDE cable supplied w/ these
drives ? In case you're using a controller w/ UDMA66 compatibility, then
a UDMA66 cable is a must or else the drive subsystem can be flaky. The
UDMA66 cable has 80 conductors instead of 40 conductors for std IDE
cables, to minimize crosstalk at high speed. HTH....Jet

hi,
try to download the latest 'tar' package from www.php.net
do the following
1. gunzip php*.gz
2. tar -xvf php*.tar
3. cd php* (change the directory to php* created in your current
directory)
3.5 install the source code for apache server also.then only
the 'apxs' script will work.
4. if you need mysql support
./configure --with-mysql --with-apxs=/usr/sbin/apxs
5. make install
6. make
7. libphp4.so will be created in the libs directory
8. check whether libphp4.so is copied to /etc/httpd/modules directory
9. if not do it manually.
10. edit /etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf
11. add the line addmodules libphp4.so and the rest.
12. restart apache server by running /etc/rc.d/init.d/httpd restart
13. go to the /etc/httpd/html
14 test this script
<?php
phpinfo();
?>
save it.
15. in your browser type http://localhost/test.php
It will work..
best of luck

I can't do the install. In the past, I have had to attatch my Inteva V71S
desktop monitor to my laptop to get an install of Red Hat, Mandrake, and
SuSE. All worked well after I tweaked my XF86Config file for the laptop
monitor. But Corel doesn't recognize either of my monitors and just
flashes vertical lines across the screens. Do I have to change
resolutions or something else on either monitor so I can proceed with
the "4-step easy install"? I'm a newbie but this is very perplexing. The
initial startup screens for Corel appear correctly on the monitors but as
soon as the graphical install message appears telling me to reboot my
system it's all over but the crying. PLEASE HELP!!!

Subject: Need GToaster help
Hi folks;
It appears I have a newbie problem, I can't seem to burn a readable
CDR/W disk, I've tried to make the same one about 4 times now, but it
cannot be 'mounted', giving the usual non-commital message about too
many filesystems or some such drivel.
The drive has worked with xcdroast-96e, but it looks like GToaster can
do more with r-w media, so I'm attempting its use.
The setup:
TYAN Trinity mobo, latest 1.16c bios, 400 mhz AMD K6-2/3DNow, 128 megs
dram.
ACER CDR-W 6202, latest flash installed
GToaster, August 2000 release.
On the initial run, I had it scan to find the cdr device, which it did.
I saved those prefs.
I picked 6 files out of the source dir listing, top right window,
drag-n-dropped them into the lower right filelist window which is shown
when you click on what looks like a mini dir listing, the 2nd of 3 icons
in the lower left corner.
Clicking on the disk icon below the file icon brings up the record menu.
I selected the TOC only clear mode, and cleared the disk sucessfully,
although the cleared disk now gives an error when attempting to mount
it. I could read the table of contents and the files previously on this
disk.
With multisession and fixate checked, I clicked on record. It went thru
all the motions, reported no errors for any of the 6 files it was
burning, then fixated the disk.
But I still get the same refusal errors when I attempt to mount the
burnt disk.
With the exception of having it scan to find the device, all the rest of
the scripts it feeds cdrecord are the compiled in defaults.
I also think my cdrecord might be an older version. Might that have
something to do with this?
Cheers, Gene

I wouldn't really say so, to be honest; obsolescence is a major pain.
Corel's current distribution is based on Debian 2.1, which is a year and
a half old (an eternity in this business, at least judging from all the
people complaining about how long 2.2 was taking :)). Debian 2.2 has
1200 new packages, if that's your thing, a large number of enhancements
and fixes to existing ones, and many security holes known to exist in
2.1 have been fixed. I'm quite sure Corel haven't incorporated half the
fixes, though they have added a few packages of their own.

Hello
I wonder if anyone can help.
I am getting frustrated and sure someone can help me overcome this
situation.
I have the following set-up:
CPU - Pentium III 500
hard drive Windows 98se
hard drive 2 - here Mandrake 7.0 was installed
cd rom drive
cd re-write drive
During installation the following was shown
/boot (hdd1)
/(hdd5)
/linux swap hdd6
/home hdd7
After the making the boot disk and lilo install to rebooting the system the
screen showed loads of l1 0101010....endlessly
and so on .
>From ms-dos I did fdisk/mbr
I cannot use the floppy to boot into my secondary drive where Linux is
installed as the error:-
"VFS cannot open root device 16:41
kernel panic VFS unable to mount rot fs on 16:41"
I have tried loadlin by taking a copy of the vmlinuz-2.2....etc and renaming
it to bzimage and then running:-
c:\linux\loadlin bzimage root=/dev/hdd5
This also gives me an error same as above for kernel panic.
I am very new to the Linux environment but very satisfactory with ms-dos and
windows. Is there any way to change the settings of the floppy/drive to
correctly boot into the Linux environment?
Any help appreciated.
