Go to deja and do a search. This problem has come up before
but I am not sure whether it was solved.

It could be. I am not sure what else lilo depends on
that should be installed. It looks like it is trying
to use the olde stuff you have installed instead of the
new stuff you have _not_ installed.

Try to use the /dev/scd? or /dev/hd? device instead. Usually the
/dev/cdrom is only a simlink to the "real" device.

Hi,

My company uses lotus mail server for their internal email needs. My problem
is this :- I'll be setting up a internet gateway on a linux box. Is there
anyway to setup a linux web-base email server to interface to the lotus
server so that I can read my mails anywhere in the world ?

Thanks a million in advance.

Getting Started pointers:

The best choice is to install after logging in as the root user. This
is necessary to setup for network use, especially if you want to use
staroffice as a non-root user.

Run the Setup program by adding the options " /net", don't forget the
space before the forward slash.

You may want to run the Setup program again without the " /net" to set
up the root user (do not need to do this).

Logout and then login as the user who needs to use Soffice.

Run the Setup program for the user without the " /net" added.

More pointers:

If you have the option to load the program in the "/usr/local/office52"
directory do so. You should find the Setup program at this location in
the sub-directory "/program".

Switch to that directory (cd /usr/local/office52/program) to start the
setup program (setup).

Type at the unix terminal prompt: setup
Then press the enter key.

Follow onscreen instructions for the installation.

After the installation is complete, start an unix terminal, at the
prompt sign, change to the office52 directory in your home directory:

cd /home/myusername/office52

Be sure to change "myusername" with your user home directory.

Within that subdirectory, you will find the program link, soffice. Type
that program name and press enter. This will start the staroffice
program.

Be sure and set up printers after the program is up and running.

StarOffice prefers KDE and automatically sets up a menu for the
program. Gnome and other window manager users must manually configure
thier own menus.

Other pointers:

If you want to set up a fax printer, post a message at the newsgroup
today.

If you need to know how to decompress the tarball staroffice files, post
a message.

I have tried installing both LinuxPPC 2000 and YellowDog Linux Release
1.2 on my powerbook at separate times. Installation has been on an
external SCSI hardrive as my internal ide drive is too small. While
installation has proceeded smoothly, once I reboot is when the problems
start. I usually get either of the following error messages:

a) INIT: cannot execute :"/sbin/mingetty"
ID "1" respawning too fast: disable for 5 minutes
no more processes left at this run level

or

b) scsi disk i/o error: dev 8:07, sector 4023
warning unable to open initial console
    Kernel panic: No init found
    Try passing init=option to kernel

Has anyone successfully installed and run a version of linux ppc on a
3400c 180mhz 603e processor powerbook? What is the trick?

Thanks in advance.

(cc'd to author), but if anyone else could offer anything, I'd appreciate
it.

This is a follow up question to the above...

I am extremely new to Linux (about a week). I'm using Mandrake 7.1 at the
moment, but have tried various other "flavors" in the past week (Mandrake
7.0, Red Hat 6.2). My problem is this: As I am experimenting with
different distributions, I don't really keep files I would like to on the
hard drive, as I have been frequently been changing distributions.

I have been installing via burned ISO files (booted with a floppy). During
installation, I have cleared out the old partition and used the "auto
allocate" feature in the installers. As this machine is only being used for
Linux (and only one distribution), I am using the entire hard drive for
whichever distribution I am using.

So I guess this is where my real question comes in...

If I have everything I need stored somewhere in my /home directory, if I
install (say a new package...maybe Suse) and keep the old partitions, my old
data should be there? I'm trying to keep it as clean as possible, so if I
do just keep the existing partitions, will it also keep a lot of stuff that
will just end up cluttering up the package?

Thanks,

Paul

I have installation problems with i810 using Linux 6.5 for xwindows. The
vga card is also built-in into the motherboard and I assumed a voodoo 3
generic as suggested by my supplier. But on specifying the monitor
properties, my monitor is not listed, so I went to choose the custom option.

The graphical display is not correct after installation.

Please tell me, how do I load this RPM after I downloaded this on the
xwindows?

Any help is much appreaciated.

Thanks.

If it's doing this on three fresh installations, then I'd say you most
likely have a hardware problem -- perhaps you've got some critical
component (like an EIDE controller) that's so new it's unsupported by
Linux; or maybe you've got some flaky RAM; or any of dozens of other
things. It's also conceivable that there's something wrong with your
partitioning layout, like a corrupt partition table. It's unlikely to be
anything to do with your subject (the fact that it's a multi-boot
setup). You might try posting a description of your hardware; somebody
might spot a problem component.

Its not the distro its XFree86, you just need some pointers to get it working.

This is not a lilo problem, it's a BIOS limitation!

search freshmeat.net, you'll have no problem finding it there, but
you'll
have to install linux first before you can upgrade LILO. This can be
done,
but if you don't know how, just follow the instructions at the end of

The easiest way to go would be another partitionscheme for your HDD:

hda1 C: 6G <----install windows here first
hda2 /boot 10M <----use linux to create all the other partitions
hda3 D: 4G <----can also be in the ext'd partition if you
like
hda4 ext'd rest <----contains / and a swap partition

I do know that Maxtor drives sometimes have trouble if set at ATA66 when
running on ATA33 boards. The troubles I have experienced are random lockups.
Maxtor (or your HD manufacturer) has utilities to set the drive to ATA33. I
would do this first.
