I want to setup a ftp server on suse linux, anyone can tell me where I
should begin with? I have read some information on ftp server and tried to
set it up. When I connect to it, it just says that 421: the service is not
available and the connection is closed. Is that I must configure ftpaccess
in order to start the service? How can I do this? Thanks for helping me.

I just installed linux on my Compaq Presario system, and the resolution
in the GNOME window envirnonmnet is wrong - so everything appears about
three times as big as it should be.

My question is: how do I change this setting to get a more reasonable
window size.

(running red hat 6.0)
*    *    *

Also, I wrote a small C program, compiled it, and when I tried to run it
at the command prompt, I got a 'command not found' error from the bash
prompt. What could be causeing that (a.out* was made after I
compiled).

Thanks a million

I think the confusion arises in "where lilo is installed" on a mixed system;
my lilo was installed in the root/boot partition of the drive lilo is on.
The computer bootup process uses the nt4 loader to present a selection of
the os configuration to bootup; I had used bootpart to add linux to the
selection. Also, I used the nt4 system selection to make linux my default
os to bootup.

So, if you had placed lilo on the mbr record, then you could be correct
(I tried it long ago but nt still came up first); but if one put lilo
on the lilo root/boot partition and use another process to boot linux, then
all is well. Would be nicer if one can get something else instead of nt4
to load linux tho. If using win9x instead of nt4/nt2k, then something
like "system commander" could do the loading of linux and with less "hazzle"
than disconnecting drive(s).

Had seen another program to load different os but they all seem to want to
reside on a fat partition; the exception was the os/2 boot loader that did
a good job but nt4 does its thing and screws everything up as typical of m$.

Does your window scroll as you move the mouse to the sides? This may be
because your virtual desktop setting is differnt then your actual
resolution. Go into /etc/X11/XF86Config, and change the virutal setting
or remove the higher resolutions above the one you want under subsection
display, mode.

You can also can adjust size using ctrl- minus or plus

This is probably because your local directory is not in your path. try
./a.out

I have just purchased an external modem. When I select its speed it will not
run at 460000 (approx, I can't remember the exact speed displayed in the
dropdown menu, 'cause I have to use windows to get any newsgroups).
It will only run at 230000(approx), from the drop down menu.
I wondered how I could improve performance as in windows the same modem is
really fast. It is so slow in Linux I can't even download pages properly.

Please help!

After the first 'hda: lost interrupt' message my kernel then decides to
issue the harddisk to wake up. From here the problem disappears.

I don't know much about what could be causing the actual problem but a
first guess would be that your machine is not turning on the interupts
properly after BIOS calls.

Recompile your kernel and in the APM support section you will see a option
that has the word interupt in it (I can't remember what it actually
says). Turn this on (or off if it is all ready on) and see what happens.

good luck

No need for fdisk.

Solved my own problem!

After being admonished to look at the various apm-related files
scattered throughout /etc/*, I found

      /etc/sysconfig/apmd

It contains many possible switches to affect the behavior of apmd.
One of the lines documented in the file refers to exactly this problem,
and uncommenting the "HDPARM" lines seems to do the trick!

It would be nice if this was actually in the documentation, rather than
just the files, of course!

 Hello.
Here is my problem. I'm trying to compile kernel on RedHat
6.2 Compilation goes fine and I can boot new kernel. Weired
problem comes up when it's time to laod modules. Here is the
error message: modprobe: Can't open dependencies files
/lib/modules/2.2.14-5.0/modules.dep

Weired thing is that this error message floods the screen
and doesn't let the boot proces to continue, just a hell
load of message like this. Oh yeah, that file does not
exist. I don't know if it';s supose to
but obviosly make modules_install doesn't write it there.
I tried to compile kernek without modules, everything in.
 Same problem!

modules.dep does present in my original
/lib/modules/blah-blah so I suppose it comes with the
distribution. But !!! even if I rename my original modules
folder and reboot the system with original kernel. I get
only one complain about modules.dep not found and system
continues to boot and gives me the login. No flooding of
same error message from depmod.

 Anybody has an idea?

I do install new System.map. I searched through Deja.com and
someone posted that saying no to CONFIG_MODVERSION should
help - no it didn't.

 Please help!

I do this basically because I need support for NTFS and
writing support to.

I had the exact same problem. I've got a Asus A7V with 800mhz
thunderbird. Two IBM Deskstar(30gb), sblive, Viper770 ultra, 128 pc133
ram. It is a problem with the RH6.2 install. It thinks your cpu is a
PIII. Only way I fixed this problem is by taking the hard drive out,
connecting it to another computer, and recompiling the kernel to use
K6-2 instead of PIII. After that it worked fine. Since then, I've
updated to the 2.4.0test-6 kernel and I'm running linux off the ATA100
controller(not sure if it runs at true speed) and with kernel set to
athlon cpu.

William,

The problem is that the RedHat 6.2 installation loads a kernel that
attempts to turn off the Intel CPUID 'feature', this causes the computer
to crash almost immediately on bootup.

It is frustrating, mostly because the installation appears to go so well.
Clearly, there is a kernel running the boot process that does work on
your computer.

What I did on this computer (a 1 GHz Athlon) is create a kernel on another
machine that didn't try to disable the CPUID, put it on a floppy, and
install it in the /boot directory by running the install CDROM in
rescue mode. This worked perfectly; although it's a bit of a pain.

Apparently it is possible to get the 386 version of the kernel off the
install CD in rescue mode, install that in the boot directory, and boot
to that; other people have reported success in that.

If you want more detailed instructions, send me mail, or check deja
news.

I wrote a script to set up the firewall from a config firewall on my SuSE
box ... should only need minor changes for other dists (and I'm talking
really minor)...
        http://www.nccnet.co.uk/~sixie/linux/
is where you can grab the stuff from if you're interested. It uses linux 2.2's
ipchains stuff, but you shouldn't need to know its syntax (unless you run
into problems with the script or want to do more fancy stuff). The config
file takes care of it all.

I had the same problem with the same version of ProFTPD, but on
Solaris 2.7. Logins as an authenticated user would fail with signal
11 (check your syslog!), while anonymous logins would work flawlessly.
I reported the bug, which was promptly resolved even before rc2 was
released, but apparently MacGyver forgot to put the fix in the release
rc2. For me, an upgrade to the latest cvs version helped, and ProFTPD
is running smoothly now.

On most recent Linux distributions, the permission bits for these
files are controlled by PAM. To stop this, edit the file
/etc/security/console.perms. Specifically, remove a line saying
something like this:

<console> 0600 <sound> 0640 root.sys

(The line with <sound> in the third column.)

After that, just set the permissions with chmod, as you would set them
for any other file.

Note that this is probably a bad idea, but I do not know what exactly
you intend to do.
