When I am asked what kind of install I want I choose Workstation. In my
case no matter what I choose I get the same pop up screen.
It reads:
An error has occured - No valid devices were found on which to create
new file systems. Please check your hardware for cause of this proble.
Thats is the message I get and RedHat reboots the system and trys again.
What am I doing wrong. I thought I just insert the cd and it should install
ok. I then Installed 98SE with no problems so I know my harddrive is
working fine.
Please please help me. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Look in /lib/modules/x.x.xx/fs where x.x.xx is kernel version and see if
it has msdos.o, fat.o, vfat.o, modules. If these aren't there the kernel
may not be compiled to support them.

When I tried to set up my CD burner under linux, the same thing happened.
What I eventually did that solved the problem was to recompile the
kernel, removing IDE/ATAPI CDROM support, and then add the SCSI cdrom
support. After that, all was well.

Hi
I recently got given a PowerSpec 1660 PC. By today's standard it's a little
underspecced (1 Gig drive, 16Meg of memory), but I have managed to get
RedHat Linux 6.2 up and running on it, as well as get it connected to an
ethernet via a network card in it. I even managed to get Gnome to run by
guessing the right video settings for the X11 setup.
Now what I want to do is to upgrade this machine a little to use it as a
webserver (for about 5 people), and as a network router. To do this I need
more memory, another hard drive, and another network card. I have talked to
Microcenter (who make this machine) and it seems I can get the memory no
problems. But beyond helping me with the memory they are essentially
useless. I need to know answers to the following questions and was hoping
some Linux person could help me out:
a) can this machine support 2 drives and 2 ethernet cards (are there
enough slots/ports?). I think so just looking at the spec sheet, but I
am not sure (at present I have one ethernet card plugged into the modem
slot, so I should be able to use the other PCI slot for the second card
...).
b) how big an EIDE drive can the second internal drive be? Microcenter
weren't sure, but guessed at 6Gig. Anyone know the correct number? Also
will any EIDE drive do the trick, or does it have to have a specific
thickness, etc?
c) I guess I need an ethernet card that plugs into the PCI bus slot. Any
suggestions for this. A Linksys 10-100 card seems a good bet ...
Any help would be greatly appreciated since Microcenter's people know
nothing, and this seems like a workable solution for my needs.
thanks

How bout just a common old comma. "," or two for a longer pause. Tilde
"~" works also in modem init strings to compenstae for slow hardware in
some instances.
I use em for getting through slow or stubborn switch boards. like
atdt9,,,1,,800 etc.

the following problem when i restart the computer:
only L appears when booting and the screen freeze.
i have installed it on a primary slave disk.
Note that the computer does not have a primary master disk
Also i have tried to modify the lilo.conf found in by removing linear and
putting lba32,but when i type lilo it gives the following warning:
/dev/hdb is not the first disk.
I have also tried to copy the boot.b and map file from the linux boot floppy
but without results.
Any help please as i cannot even boot on the Windows System

You could try rexec.
I have a similar set up here, where I launch X apps on my
Linux system from my OS/2 box. The command format (in OS/2)
is:
rexec <remotehost> -l <userid> -p <password> <path &
filename> -display <localhost>

No, the kernel is not strong real-time; i.e., pieces of the kernel
cannot ask for execution-time guarantees of any kind. They're more
likely to execute in a given time than is a userspace app, but they are
not certain to; interrupt handler upper halves can pre-empt *anything*,
including pieces of the kernel, so even they cannot make guarantees
about execution time.

WinMe uses FAT 32 (LBA) (type c in Linux fdisk) and Win2k Pro
uses NTFS (type 7 in Linux fdisk); never tried mounting an
NTFS partition with Linux. Didn't used to work, but supposedly
does now. I'll try it the next chance I get.

L error
The first stage boot loader has been loaded and started, but it can't
load the
second stage boot loader. The two-digit error codes indicate the type
of problem.
This condition usually indicates a media failure or a geometry
mismatch.

Nope, this has nothing to do with real-timeness. Even though Linux is
not a real-time OS (i.e. applications cannot ask for and receive strong
guarantees of time-to-execute-in), it *could* implement a new scheduling
class (called, when this has come up on linux-kernel, `SCHED_IDLE')
which received time only when nothing else did.
The problem is that this can have horrible effects on the rest of the
system through what is called `priority inversion'. The problem is that
such idle-time processes can grab locks that can affect higher-priority
processes, which can lead to low-priority processes *blocking*
high-priority ones for arbitrarily long periods of time:
A (SCHED_IDLE) B (SCHED_OTHER, normal) C (SCHED_FIFO, high)
Takes lock FOO
Starts work, blocks A's
execution
Needs lock FOO, but blocked
C is blocked until B (a lower-priority process!) lets A have enough
CPU time to release its lock.
Possible fixes for this include killing SCHED_IDLE processes whenever
they have lock contention with a higher-priority process (unwise because
just because something is SCHED_IDLE doesn't mean it is unimportant; a
simulation run that's been going for three weeks shouldn't be
killed!)... and other strategies, most of them fearfully complicated and
most of them penalizing the common case of taking or releasing an
uncontended lock (a very, very frequent operation).
i.e. this scheduling class Just Isn't Going To Happen.
