Im still pretty new to this, so bear with me..;-)
Im experiencing very much the same problem in a very different
situation.
I tried to install SuSE 6.4 tonight, but I never even get past the
booting process.
I waited for ten minutes till the Loading... showed up on the screen at
24:00 and then I went to bed and when I checked again at 10:00 in the
morning the screen read:
Loading initrd.......(wich means the ram disk(?) is loaded -THIS IS
SERIOUS)
Ive read somewhere (SuSE support Database) there is a problem with IDE
drives.
but how can I ever fix it if I dont get to boot? Its also strange that
everythings fine with RH5.1, wich is also installed.
My configuration:
M6VBE-A
PIII 500 Mhz, 128 MB RAM
with Win98 on a primary partition on my 20GB hd and everything else on
an extended partition on that drive.

When I try to install SuSE 6.4, I just cant boot from CDROM.
The booting process takes ages.
I once left it to itself for 10 hours, only to find it had aborted and
started again, but even then it had not gotten past initrd....
What do I do?

Subject: kernel panic: init not found
Date: Sat, 26 Aug 2000 18:54:51 GMT
Hi,
my problem is the following:
I made a 2 disk boot/root on my system:
Mitac Laptop 6120
Pentium III 650
128 SDRAM
REDHAT 6.1 :-) YEAH STILL
Kernel 2.2.16-3 , zImage
I did as described in the Bootdisk-Howto.
But when booting, after loading the root-filesystem int the ram i got
the message:
kernel-panic: init not found (try kernel parameter: init=..)
but i have the file init in /sbin/init. I tried also in etc and bin.
if i include a link linuxrc pointing to init
i got the error: kmod: error invoking modprobe ......err=8
so it seems HE (the kernel) cannot access the root-fs.
But he can start linuxrc?!?!?!?!
What could be wrong?
Iam graceful for every kind of help............
p.s. this error was already posted in another group, but unfortunately
not answered.

Samba does it just fine. I can browse my home directory, a public share,
printers, etc. I have a win98 laptop which I use for a few things and I
have samba setup on my debian box. It provides file and printer sharing. I
can also "share" my cd if I would want. I have gotten the preexec and
postexec stuff to also share a zipdrive.

Subject: ipchains: Incompatible with this kernel
Date: Sat, 26 Aug 2000 19:40:50 GMT
the saga continues....
I'm building linux learning/router/firewall that will live between the
cable modem and the Win98 box in the end. I started with the Redhat
6.2 distro.
The NICs I bought (because the model worked just fine for the linux
partition on the Win98 box) were no longer compatible. I needed to
upgrade to 2.3.99 kernel. I got the entire source tarball, un-tarred
it, and built the kernel. I've got the linux box
A. Talking to the internet through eth0
B. Assigning dynamic IPs to the Win98 box through eth1.
C. Not talking between eth0 and eth1.
I've used the ipchains HOWTO to get everything set up. As far as I
can tell, there are no error messages at boot, except for a NFS lockd
problem. I'll fight that one later.
After a lot of searching/head scratching, I found that when I just
type in
/sbin/ipchains -F
I get the error message 'ipchains: Incompatible with this kernel'
Doing a 'find' for ipchains, I see more source sitting under
/usr/src/linux/<even deeper>, so I know I need to compile it and get
it installed. First question, is there any special trick to this?
Watching the kernel compile, there are lots of arguments during the
kernel and module builds. I'm guessing that they are important for a
correct .o file. Also, since there is a problem with /sbin/ipchains,
I'm only going to assume that there is at LEAST one more binary that
will need to be updated. Is there a 'make' (or something similar)
that will re-compile and re-install everything in the /sbin and /bin
directories? I've looked in the kernel HOWTO, a couple of linux books
that I bought, but don't see anything in there about new /bin files.
Just 'make dep clean bzlilo modules modules_install' after 'make
config'.
Help would be wonderful at this point.
Thanks.

Partition Magic from Power Quest will handle Linux very well. The initial
out of the box 4.0 version of Partition Magic failed to correctly format
the ext2 partition and swap partition for Linux. The upgrade works fine.
But, I simply let RedHat installation procedure go ahead and include
reformating the ext2 partition. Everything worked fine. It does handle
switching partitions to different formats, too. At least, I tried with a
partition for data storage and it worked fine to convert from ext2 to
vfat32.

I use RedHat 6.2 and find a similar problem. I'm looking into the
"linuxconf" program as a possible cause. I have tried the suggestions named
so far. Somewhere buried in one of the start up scripts there is a line
that I hope clear this up.

Subject: Installation Problem Here's my hardware.
Date: Sat, 26 Aug 2000 20:05:22 GMT
Here's the problem:
I use my CD-Rom to Boot up Linux Redhat 6.2 i386 distro.
After I boot, I hit enter to begin installation. I select my generic ps/2 mouse
w/ 3 buttons, select my time zones, setup my accounts, select a generic svga
card, and my ctx-1765 monitor. It begins to install.
Through installation on the last 47-44 packages of the install on the postscript
stuff or something to do with tex, it freezes and the computer becomes
non-responsive. Sometimes the installation will just stop<meaning no files are
transferred, no progress occurs>, but my mouse is still usable, and i can still
turn on and off the three lock keys.
There was one occasion last night, in which I was able to install, but then it
told me I had faults w/ my hd or something and to run fsck and that it'd load me
up in the shell as root. I load up and type fsck, and it says something
parallelizing or something, and gives me back the prompt.
Well I got tired of this because I didn't know what to do, so I am attempting to
install it again.
I will change to a different hard drive after the current attempt at
installation.
Here's the hardware:
Pentium 2 - 333 off a 66mhz FSB
64 Megs of PC66 Ram
Unknown Motherboard - Dual processor board w/ onboard scsi & sound off a Phoenix
4.0 bios
1.44MB Mitsumi FDD
24x Generic EIDE CD-ROM
EIDE AC32500 Western Digital 2.5 Gig HD
3Com 3c509b-TPO ISA ethernet card
AccelGraphics AccelGalaxy video card based on the Evans & Sutherland RealImage
2100 chipset
--
I feel that the hard drive should be fine because it previously ran Win NT 4 SP5
alright, so I tried switching Video cards to something supported, I chose my
spare Voodoo 3 2000 PCI, same problems in the same place.
But because I am running off of an unknown motherboard, I will try to install
on my Dual Celeron 500 abit bp6 w/ a removable HD System since this is supported
and even has its own distro of linux from abit.
--
Something else
--
I tried installing linux on my friend's computer, it never got into language
selection. It'd error out and give me a signal 11.
I attempted expert install as well, and it'd error out in the drivers area.
His Hardware:
Video - Matrox MGA Chipset
CD - Mitsumi CD-ROM 24x
TEAC 1.44mb FDD
FIC VA-503+ K6 Motherboad
K6-2-333mhz
128 megs of Ram on SIMMs.
I am thinking that the motherboard has some problems, either that or the
k6-2-333mhz has probs itself <I remember reading that K6-2 300's had problems,
but didn't know if they meant all 300's>

You should have an icon for the Mandrake documentation somewhere on your
desktop. Open it, go to the User Guide, and have a look at the "Configuring an
Internet connection" topic. It shows you, step by step, how to set up kppp.
