There is another way!

But only if you have an extra hard drive (or a very large one), the time
and patience to reinstall Win9x (or whatever) and are willing to (maybe)
lose some data.

1) Get some free space on a new partition (Create one on the extra HD or
at the END (this is important!!!) of the HD in your system.

2) Copy all the data to that partition, then delete the original one

3) Create your Linux partition (or you can just create a FAT/NTFS
partition and delete it later and put a linux one in its place), then
create your Windows, Program Files, etc. partition right after it! Copy
the files from the backup on the Windows partition and delete the
"Linux" partition.

4) Now, using the Linux Installation use fdisk (or disk druid) to create
the Linux partition and swap drive (in the place of the "Linux"
partition you just deleted!)

5) Install Windows (and then Linux with LILO set on the first boot
sector of the boot partition!) -- if you don't put LILO on the linux
part., it will install over windows and you'll have to reinstall again!

DONE!

Your hard drive should now look something like this:

1) LINUX
2) LINUX SWAP
3) FAT/NTFS

Good luck!

Michael

Mandrake sent me an Update CD and I ran it. I had to fiddle with some files
because KDE was giving me 'permission denied' when I tried to go to the
CDROM. I fixed that permission error but now I cannot mount the cdrom.
When I

mount /mnt/cdrom
fs fs=iso9660 not supported by kernel

error appears. Same for the floppy. I checked the file 'filesystems' and it
lists the proper devices.

Anyone got any ideas?

Off the top of my head, do all the cache directories exist?

One thing which will work in general (not just for squid), is to use
the strace program. In your case
 strace -o squid.output.file.from.strace squid -z
strace will create that file listed after the -o and send a copy of
ALL the system calls squid makes to the file. I did this once with
WINE, and got a file 138,000 lines long. But if squid is dying on not
being able to find a file or directory, you will see it in the system
call trace.

I agree with Steve.
to check if yu have a routing issue try thi command to ping :
ping -n xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx

-n disables the name lookup

Check in /usr/share/applnk (or wherever your KDE is). You probably have
the same items repeated with two names.

For example: whatever.kdelnk and whatever.desktop.

The .kdelnk is from KDE 1.x, the .desktop one is from KDE 2.x.

Remove the kdelnk ones.

This is a bug with the binary packages you installed.

kpackage can't fix a broken package. Did you do an install or an

Thank you for the help, i did it and was able to compile adding the kgcc
line in the Makefile.

I wasnt able to compile modules.. it retournes some sort of errors.. so
i put every module in the kernel but my PCI SB 64V doesn't works.

sndconfig says i've a Ensonic ES1371 that is not supported, but in sound
drivers under the kernel configuration i added to the system the driver.

What should it do to test it??

Maybe i'll have to wait till RH releases a new distribution with less
errors...

Thanks in advance.

No it doesn't. The 3c509's are something like 7 years old, and have
worked fine, just always. There was a time about 5 years ago when you
needed two modules for two NICs, but that's not been true for ages.

Fine ideas. After all, how else would one talk to them?

Yes, but unnecessary. I believe that the 3c509 driver has handled
multiple nics for years. Separating the irqs andio addresses is the
only prerequisite.

I don't believe you ..one of those parameters is not accepted nowadays!
Indeed .. these are all the params in the 2.2.15 driver:

  MODULE_PARM(debug,"i");
  MODULE_PARM(irq,"1-8i");
  MODULE_PARM(xcvr,"1-8i");

and as you can see, "io" is not among them. So, what are you smoking?

Yes, where does this halucination come from. Come clean. You must be
using a 2.0.38 kernel?

I would check them out -- I'ev been tempted to upgrade to some good
100Mb cards (mine are 10Mb); maybe now is the perfect opportunity.

> Use "expert" mode when installing and you'll also have the opportunity

Oufff!! It's just funny how the possibility of "expert" kept being
refused by my subconscious! :-) I never even remotely thought
about that possibility, and when I read your message, I thought to
mysef: "Duh! You idiot! Of course that's what you should have done!"
:-)

Anyway, I did that, indicated "PCI NE2000 clones", and the installer
prompted me for the IP and all related info. After installing, at
the first boot, it displayed:

Bringing up interface eth0 [OK]

But then, after logging in, eth0 does not exist (nor anything
related to networking). If I do `/sbin/ifconfig eth0 up' it
gives me the same error message as before (ressource temporarily
unavailable).

:-(

I didn't disable "PnP OS" in the BIOS... Wouldn't this affect
Windows? (I'm setting up a dual boot with Windows 2000). I
guess I could try (worst case, I set it back to enabled), but
could this be making the difference?

Thanks!

I don't know if I've ever tried to do it that way, but I do know that
I've installed other things in the MBR of both WinNT and Win2K systems
without ill effect. Still, NT/2K's OS Loader is pretty finicky at times.
My own personal preference in a situation like this is to put Win98 and
Win2K on two separate PRIMARY partitions, put Linux on a logical
partition, and use a tool like System Commander to control the boot
process. As you've got it now, Win2K is actually starting its boot from
/dev/hda1, so it relies on two partitions to get anywhere at all. Given
the finicky nature of Win2K about partitions and booting, that leads to
trouble a lot of the time.

FWIW, I discuss partitioning and boot schemes (and lots more) in
greater detail in my book, _The Multi-Boot Configuration Handbook_
(http://www.rodsbooks.com/multiboot/).

> 2. If possible, i want to boot Linux from a floppy disk to avoid conflict
> with Windows bootloader. What's my best option to get this result?

The quickest way (in terms of boot time) is to put LILO on a floppy.
This requires the system to load just one sector from the floppy disk at
boot time; the kernel and everything else resides on the hard disk. Some
distributions let you do this from the start, but most assume you'll be
booting from the hard disk. I don't recall what RH7 does. If necessary,
you can put LILO on the Linux boot partition and then later create a
LILO-enabled floppy. (I do know that RH7 gives SOME option for a boot
floppy, but it may store the entire kernel on the floppy.)

Other options involve putting the entire kernel on the floppy, either
"raw" (which causes the kernel to boot when you install the floppy) or
used in conjunction with a DOS boot system and a utility called LOADLIN.
These are both slower than a LILO boot, but they've got some added
flexibility because they make it easier to change some aspects of the
boot process (particularly with LOADLIN).

> 3. Aside from the "basics" like swap, boot and root i come across in various

I generally recommend that new Linux users keep it simple -- / (root),
/home, swap, and possibly /boot. Carving up more partitions offers
advantages to experienced administrators, but new users are unlikely to
get the sizes right. The experience of others is unlikely to be useful
to you, because how you use the system is unlikely to correspond to the
way any given other person does, and this will influence the best
partition sizes.

I'll worry about KDE and/or Gnome after I get a basic X-setup to work

I don't have experience with installing LILO in the MBR with Win2k...

This will be no problem. I guess you will have the option to create a boot
disk at setup (I had with Mandrake 7.2). Just insert it and restart your
computer to boot to Linux.

If you want to multiboot Win98+Win2k+Linux, I recommend you just add Linux
to the Win2k boot loader. Search for the Linux + NT loader mini-howto on
www.linuxdoc.org. In short, you will have to do the following:
- install LILO in the first sector of your Linux partition
- copy this sector to a file with the dd command
- copy this file to your boot partition (c:\)
- Edit boot.ini to add Linux to the bootmenu

I have a similar setup, and it works perfectly here. On my site there is
also an article with instructions about this. Use the URL
http://start.sjc-gent.be/real/linux/, because it seems cjb.net is down for
the moment.

The eth0 refers to your network interface (nic). Promiscuous mode tells
the interface to receive all packets going through the network instead
of ignoring those not for itself.

Is it possible to make redhat as one of the choices in the bootmenu from
NT4.0
How????

Don,

Rebuild the kernel with floppy/iso9960 support built in. The easiest
way ( as you're running a graphical interface ) is...

cd /usr/src/linux
make xconfig ( select the extra options )
make dep
make bzImage
make install
make modules
make modules_install

( you may want to save the running kernel as a backup, and edit
/etc/lilo.conf / run lilo in case of difficulties ).

Subject: Setting users default file permissions
Date: Tue, 23 Jan 2001 15:31:06 GMT

Hi all,

I have two users that are sharing a linked public_html directory. The
reason is that they both belong to the same club. One is the
"webmaster" for the club, the other is the "president".

Both need to edit/update the club html directory.

So what I have done so far is to setup both users:

webmaster and president to be in the same group: "club".

As I mentioned above, in each users directory is a symbolic
link to the club html directory.

I have set the club html directory and all of the files in it to have
rwxrwxr_x permissions.

All works great until one user creates a new file. At that point the
new file has permissions of rwxr_xr_x so that now the other user
cannot update this file.

Back in my Xenix/Unix days there was a place where you could set the
default file permissions for a user. How do I do that under Linux?

I think my problem might be solved if I can give both users +w
privledges for group.

I'm also open to better ways to accomplish what these two folks need.

Thanks - Mark

Add Linux to the NT loader. Read the Linux + NT loader mini-howto on
www.linuxdoc.org for instructions.

Good luck!

then add NT to the lilo.config file and run /sbin/lilo
The manpages are your friend.

not if you would make the linux partition the active one

not how, but howto :-)

I've tried the first of your suggestions, connecting the two hard drives
on IDE1, with the Windows one as slave (and hdb). I still don't get any
joy, however - it just hangs after printing 'Loading win98'. Will the
computer perhaps not boot off a drive set to slave? If so, how do I get
around this, as I don't suppose I could have them both as master on the
same cable.

Re your second suggestion, would the computer not just boot straight off
hda into windows without looking at lilo (which would be on hdb)?

I greatly appreciate any light you could throw on the subject.

I should have been clearer...

I figured out umask. Unfortunately these two users typically upload
files via FTP. It seems like wu-FTP is setting the files to:
rwxr_xr_x.

Anybody know of a way to change that?
