I was not addressing my reply in any way to your citation of Turing machines
since your citation was an invalid attempt to try to falsely intellectualize
your position. I for one am not foolish enough to fall into your trap that
you have not even tried to hide.
What persistance? The switches used in this style are higly volatile more
so than core storage and are perhaps the equals of the processor's registers
in terms of the survivalibility of the data. Those toggle switches used to
provide the machine code instruction the the processor a byte or word at a
time are not used for storage. They are a means of communications to with
the processor or to the core storage. If you consider those toggles as
storage then you would have to consider the keyboards as storage as well
because they are used for a similar purpose.

It is unclear whether or not you have Linux on the machine.
If you don't, I don't see how you ran cfdisk. If you do
have Linux on the machine, and you put the lilo boot loader
in the master boot record, there is a good chance you wouldn't
be able to boot NT afterwards. But I am just guessing.
Let us know about Linux.
If all you have on the machine is NT and you were using a Linux
rescue system in a ramdisk, use it to delete the NT partition.
Then try to find a DOS/Windows startup disk and boot from it
and run
fdisk/mbr
Then the disk ought to look clean to the NT installer.

Subject: "Unresolved symbol errors" in sound and parallel port modules of kernel
Well, I am doing what I know I shouldn't do, attempting to upgrade a
kernel when everything is working OK. Nevertheless, here is the
situation.
Currently running RH 6.0 with a kernel 2.2.12 I previously compiled in
February, 2000. Under this older kernel (2.2.12), everything (including
sound on a Soundblaster 16 and the parallel port printer work fine.
To compile the new kernel to 2.2.16 (downloaded from a kernel.org mirror
site), I did "make clean dep modules bzImage modules_install install".
Everything compiles fine with no evidence of errors. The new modules
appear in /lib/modules/2.2.16, as expected. The /boot directory has a
System.map with the appropriate new date and linked to
System.map-2.2.16. I altered LILO to boot the new kernel, leaving an
option to boot the old kernel at the LILO prompt as "old".
When the new kernel boots, most functions come up as they should, with
the exception of the sound and the parallel
port. For both kernels 2.2.12 and 2.2.16, these functions are compiled
as modules (with kernel
module loader compiled into the kernel). (On the problematic 2.2.16
kernel, other modules, the ethernet
ne.o for example, automatically configure at boot time and appear in the
module list with lsmod.) The conf.modules file in /etc is unaltered from
the older, functioning kernel 2.2.12. This contains the information for
the IRQ, DMA and address of the sound card.
Attempting manually to load any sound-related (soundcore.o, sound.o,
sb.o, mpu401.o etc.) or parallel port-related module (parport.o,
parport_pc.o, etc.) while kernel 2.2.16 is running results
in an "unresolved symbols" error. I have compared the modules in
/lib/modules/2.2.14/misc (which work) with the new
/lib/modules/2.2.16/misc directory generated at compile time. For
sound, they seem all to be there
(soundcore.o, sound.o, uart401, awe_wave.o, mpu401.o, opl3.o, v_midi.o,
and sb.o. For the parallel port, they are parport.o, parport_pc.o and
lp.o. (Not sure about the function of uart6850.o, but it is present in
both versions.) None of these modules can be manually loaded with
modprobe (or insmod) without the "unresolved symbols" error.
Running depmod -a under kernel 2.2.16 results in the same "unresolved
symbols" error for the sound and parallel port modules listed above, and
no errors for any other, unrelated modules.
I have tried recompiling kernel 2.2.16 a couple of times on the
possibility that random
random compilation errors made these particular modules unusable. The
result is exactly the same.
WHAT COULD BE THE REASON FOR THE "unresolved symbol" errors? Has anyone
else run into these difficulties with kernel 2.2.16? Is it possible that
I got a bad tar.gz file of the kernel? It seems unlikely.
Fortunately I am NOT in dire straights because I am using LILO so that
I can boot
either the new or the old kernel. Nevertheless, I see no reason why
kernel 2.2.16 should be giving me these problems. This is a humbling
experience, since after nearly three years of running various version of
RH Linux successfully (and compiling a number of kernels and programs),
I thought I almost knew what I was doing...

This has happened to me a few times, and I don't know the complete
answer. You can definitely get a panel back by opening a terminal and
typing "panel". This runs the panel program. To see that the panel runs
again when X is started, one can save the current session settings
(footprint icon >> Settings >> Save current session).
The problem I have had is that even though the panel reappears, afterward
I sometimes cannot get X to shutdown with the shutdown icon on the panel.
I have been forced to go to a fullscreen terminal and use kill -9 to end
the gnome session and all its functions. With lots of fiddling, I have
generally managed to get the system back into a functional state, but I
really don't know the secret.
Anyway, run "panel" and see what happens. Maybe you will be lucky!

I have recently installed Mandrake 7.0 on my new PC:
Athlon 600
ASUS K7M Motherboard
G400 Graphics card (32Mb)
Mitsubishi Pro 710 monitor
The problem is that that periodically, possibly anywhere between 30
seconds to several minutes, my screen blinks. That is it goes blank
for about a second after which the desktop display returns. I have
tried upgrading to 7.1 of Mandrake, but that did not help. I am
running KDE, but the same problem also manifests itself when I switch
to Gnome. I did notice that when I try to configure my graphics card,
specifying 32M, that when I go back in to configure it again it seems
to reset it to a 16M G400, though I don't know whether this is an
issue.
Since upgrading to 7.1 I have selected my monitor from the list
provided by the X-config utility and the Vertical and Horizontal sync
rates match between my monitor manual and the XF86Config file.
This is a really anoying bug that's driving me up the wall so any help
would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance,
Clive.

I have been using the HP internal IDE drive for a few years,
and it seems more than adequate. These drives seem to vary
in capacity between 2.5 and 5 BG or more. It is by far the
least expensive alternative as far as I can see.

If your sound card is detected at boot time, it should work out of the
box --- no configuaration or downloads. xmms is included just go and
select multimedia, then xmms.
If sound card is not detected, and your card is supported, try to add a
line
alias sound driver_name
where driver_name is the module for your sound card.

Be careful. I've read on this group that during the install, Corel
will modify the MBR without asking you for permission. If you have a
dual boot system, you could be in trouble. Maybe someone here who has

if you type in dos then Windows starts up.
You can also reverse the order of the options in the lilo.conf file but

It sounds like your partition tables are screwed, read on. . .
I had a similar thing happen to a 6.4GB WD drive in a NT box at work while
installing an Iomega Zip drive not to long ago. After attempting to
re-partition it with disk-administrator and format it in another NT box after
attempting to re-install NT on the original machine with no luck, and then
attempt to install NT on it twice only to have it not boot, twice, again, I
gave up, brought it home, stuck it in my Linux box, ran fdisk on it, printed
the partition table, and lo-and-behold, the three partitions ended in the
middle of cylinders (supposed to end at the end of a cylinder) and were
crossed (over lapped) to boot. In other words, the partition tables were
fucked, and nothing I did with NT warned me about it, it just proceeded to
waste my time. I also tried fdisk from a DOS 6.22 system floppy at work.
Nada. With Linux fdisk, I just created a new empty dos partition table, exited
fdisk to save the changes, re-entered fdisk, created one primary, and two
logical dos partitions, took the drive back to the shop, formated it and
successfully and finally had the box back up and running after the usual
re-boot it 15-20 times song and dance routine.

Subject: Linux and MS Server2000 on one HD

Hi all,
Can somebody give me the definitive answer on how to have 2 OS on the one
hard disk. I wish to have a partition for Linux (say 3GB) and one for MS
Server 2000( about 3 GB). Which OS should I install first and where?
Please help!

my screen turned white pressing ctrl+alt+ min or plus to change resolution i
the login-screen. This happened on my Medion laptop. From the moment my
computer starts up, the screenis white and remains like that. I can hear
everything start up as normal, corel linux and windows, but I can't see
anything, and ctrl+alt+ min or plus doesn't work anymore.
Any suggestions? Even radical ones, cause everything I tried failed
