I also think it might be a boot virus, check

if you put LILO on a partition, will you be able to choose which OS to boot

I just totally deleted my Win 98SE and installed Linux Madrake 7.1 as the
only OS in my laptop Compaq 5280.
Question 1: I don't think that Harddrake found the modem: The Control
panel shows the modem empty. In Kppp when I select "Query Modem" and
select device ttyS2 it finds the modem but returns all blank lines. When I
had Windows, the modem was in Com 2 IRQ 11. But ttyS1 returns "modem busy".
My modem is a IBM PCMCIA It says Open PCMCIA 2.1 Type II or III Slot. MOD
393 Part Number 10L7393. How do I install a modem manually?
Question 2: The video driver is a Cirrus Logic 7543. Linux found it OK.
The problem is that I have a dark border of about 3/4 inch in my laptop LCD
screen. The card supports 800X600. How do I expand the wall paper to use
the whole screen?.
I have some other problems but first I need to fix these two....
Thank you in advanced,
Gerardo

I am trying to install Red Hat 6.2 on my Intel system. The system has two
SCSI hard drives. I setup the system in the following manner,
/boot sda1 23M Linux native
<swap> sda8 517M Linux swap
<swap> sdb7 517M Linux swap
/root sdb9 23M Linux native

/home md1 800M RAID1[sda7,sdb6]
/var md2 902M RAID1[sda6,sdb5]
/tmp md3 502M RAID1[sdb8,sda9]
The process went smoothly. At the very end the system hangs with the
following message, "Performing post install configuration..." Does anyone
what gives? Your help is greatly appreciated.

the -t option is wanting you to specify the filesystem type on the floppy (like
ext2 or vfat or whatever) not how it was low level formatted
After formatting with fdformat, you need to create a fliesystem on it.
the type of filesystem of course depends on whether you want to read the disk
under OSes other than linux. For a ext2 fs, do a "mkfs -t ext2 /dev/fd0" For
more information see the mkfs man page ("man mkfs")
At that point you should be able to mount it and copy files to it. ("mount -t
ext2 /dev/fd0 /mnt/floppy" then copy the files to /mnt/floppy, not /dev/floppy)

/etc/fstab doesn't tell you what is mounted. It gives the default options for
when it does get mounted, and whether it gets automounted etc.
having that entry in /etc/fstab means that once the floppy has an ext2
filesystem created on it, all you need to do is a "mount /mnt/floppy" and it
will mount the device specified (/dev/fd0) with the specified filesystem (ext2)
and the listed options (noauto,owner)
/etc/mtab will normally list the mounted filesystems, or you can do a simple
"mount" with no options to see what is mounted.

Nope, that's not what you want to do.

This will work if /dev/floppy is a symlink to /dev/fd0, but it probably won't do what
you're trying to do. dd is used like rawrite in ms (ie to copy and move raw
images not regular files as such)

For some reason whenever I log on to my account (from xdm)
with a gnome session, my panel starts off to the right side of
my screen and in the middle (only half is visible, the other half
is off the screen). If I hide it, then it will return to the correct
position (at the bottom). I know its not a problem with the panel
configuration (its edge type), and I don't even thing it has to do
with my gnome configuration (I tried removing my config in my
home and resinstalling the default rc and other files and it still
showed up in that wierd spot). The panel works fine on all the
other accounts on this machine, so its not the default's problem
(and I checked diff between almost all the files -- nothing
that would point to any thing wierd). I also tried to diff the general
X config files in my home against the defaults, but that turned up
nothing as well (literally nothing, since they matched). So
I'm at a loss. :\ Its not really that big of a deal, just kind of
an annoyance since I have to click on it whenever I start up...
but if anyone has a solution, I'd be somewhat happy. :)

The '/dev/fd0H1440' parameter of fdformat is a way to tell
directly both the device /dev/fd0 and the capacity of the
diskette, not the filesystem. fdformat automatically create
a new ext2fs filesystem on the floppy.
Use
mount -text2 /dev/fd0 /mnt/floppy
to mount the floppy
>cp /etc/syslog.conf /dev/fd0
Don't do that! /dev/fd0 is the 'rappresentation' of the
floppy disk in linux. Each device (hard disk, cd rom,
com port...) have something like that into the /dev
directory. Deleting one is not a big problem (you can
recreate the file using mknod) but it's a bad thing to
do.

>
>dd if=/etc/syslog.conf of=/dev/floppy

dd is the generical 'copy' command that can copy
disk sector directly to a device. Be carefull with that,
especially if you use it as root... I did once
an dd /home/somefile /dev/hda0 instead of
dd /home/somefile /dev/fd0 and screwed up my boot
sector (and partition table)... bad thing to do...
Linux uses buffering i/o extensively, before the file
is effectively wrote on the floppy you have to dismount the
floppy with umount. Do not remove the floppy without
dismount it before!

I wonder why the modem connection speed is not stable under my Redhat
6.2. I mean that it can be high speed connection (almost to the limit of
my 56K) for about 10 seconds, then it drops to zero for 30 sec - 2
minutes, or so, and then it increases again for another 10 to 15 sec.
and drops again and so on....
If I boot to Win98 and connect to the same modem pool, the connection is
very stable and at the high speed all the time.
I use RedHat 6.2 and ppp-2.3 RPM. I have PCMCIA Xircom RealPort
Ethernet10/100 + Modem56k card in my laptop.
Is it just a matter of improper settings in Linux?
cheers,
Andrey.

Sorry, I forgot, after this, have you created the filesystem
with mkfs ? Because if not, you have *not* formatted the
floppy, but only erased it.

I just recently did my first ever installation of linux, Mandrake Linux
7.0, on my computer. The problem that I have run into is that the standard
C++ libraries (iostream etc) are not to be found. I have done a complete
search of the hard drive, but to no avail. I used RPM to check the
currently installed packages, and one of them (gcc-c++ I believe) says
that the standard libraries are not included. As well I checked the
packages on my source CD, but could not intuitively find it by just the
names of the packages.
Was I supposed to set up my installation for "Development"? If so how do I
get those libraries installed.
Thanks in advance.
