Silly question, but - Do you have the BIOS setup to suspend?

I've got the same MB, and the BIOS allows you to set the action for the
power button (ie) - suspend, 5 second delay & shutoff, etc.

How to put LILO in 1st sector of boot partition ?
When I installed RedHat 7, I was given the option to put LILO boot
record on the MBR (Master Boot Record) or the first sector of the boot
partition. I chose to put the LILO on the first sector of the boot
partition. This setup worked great for triple boot with Win2K &
Win98SE; I gave control to NT Loader.
How do you do this is Mandrake? Mandrake gives you an option between
LILO and Grub, but doesn't allow you to specify the location. LILO was
put in the MBR, and I'm not happy with that.
If you know how to put LILO in the first sector of the boot partition in
Mandrake, please share.
Thanks.

my lilo.conf is:

image = /vmlinuz
    root = /dev/hda1
    label = linux
    append = "hdd=ide-scsi"

Edit the file /etc/lilo.conf, change the line boot=/dev/hda to point
to your boot partition (/dev/hda0, or whatever), then run /sbin/lilo

pushing RH&.0, which I DON'T want.

I found it on Amazon, with a "2-3 day shipment". After waiting almost a

Any suggestions?

I have a new system with Win 2K pre-installed.

On my earlier system I was running RH 6.0 on a 2nd hard drive.

I removed that and installed the drive in my new system. How do

I setup LILO on my master boot record to boot linux on /hdb ?

BTW I tried booting RH 6.1 on the CD and upgrading, but it could
not find any previous linux installations (it hung up trying). The
2nd drive is seen right by the system, but there is no LILO like on
my old system.

think it should work (with little changes) for Red Hat too. You just have
to give the option "linux ide2=(mem addresses)" to the LILO boot loader.
With Mandrake, You have to press F1 to see the LILO prompt. Don't know how
this will happen with Red Hat, it's possible you will get the message
"LILO" automatically when booting from the cd. If you don't type anything,
it will continue after a few seconds. But if you type the ide2=... stuff,
and press Enter, it should be ok.... I hope :-)

Subject: Display problems
Date: Sat, 27 Jan 2001 20:01:08 GMT

Sorry .. I don't know how to characterize my problem any more specifically
than "display problems". That's because I really don't know where the
problem is. Also, it could be multiple problems compunding each other.

First, the basics: RH 7.0 with gnome desktop on a 133Mhz Pentium and 64MB
RAM. My video card is a Trident 9680 PCI w/2MB. My monitor is an old Dell
1428U with 13" viewable diagonal.

Symptom #1: Whenever I launch a program, its window exceeds the physical
limits of my screen. I have to resize it to a smaller window to fit in the
screen. Some winows (eg, Netscape 4.7's Preferences dialog) don't allow
window resizing or maximizing and support limited moving, so I can't even
access certain fields and buttons.

Curiously, if I hit the Maximize square in the upper right corner of a
program's window .. it resizes properly to take up exactly the physical
space of my screen. That makes me think my system at least knows the proper
size of my screen. So why doesn't it show this type of intelligence when a
program is launched?

Symptom #2: Underlined fonts in Netscape 4.7 suck. Any link displayed in
Netscape is almost unreadable, because the links are displayed as
underlined. Other fonts in general aren't as 'crisp' as what I see on this
same machine when I boot it to Win 95.

These issues are really making my use of Linux as a destop environment and
Internet browser very inferior to my other machine (Windows 2000 with IE and
Outlook Express).

I'd really like to improve my linux usability issues, but I just don't know
if I'm running into video card limitations, physical memory limitations,
linux configuration issues, monitor problems, X Windows config/font
problems, gnome desktop issues, or Netscape problems. Where do I begin?

Also, does RH 7.0 come with a system inventory tool, so I can check the
current settings of all system devices?

Thanks,
-Bob

Date: Sat, 27 Jan 2001 15:34:46 -0500
Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Hello all,

I'm fairly new to Linux (don't all these messages start with that
"disclaimer??!"). I guess i'm not *that* new to linux, because I've gone
so far as to remove my Win98 partition completely! So i'm only doing
linux...pretty daring.

Anyway, I have a OLD Roland LAPC-1 sound card which is basically a
MPU-401, or so Windows used to say. Even though it's old, it really
still sounds wonderful (for those of you who remember the Roland MT-32,
it is pretty much just that, except it's all on a card, not the external
sound module thingy). Anyway, I would *really* like to get it working in
Linux, but I really am stumped. I don't know too much about setting all
this stuff up, but when I configured and compiled the 2.4 kernel I added
MPU-401 support, and I do have a /dev/mpu401data and /dev/mpu401stat, but
apparantly they aren't working. I also tried "insmod mpu401 io=330
irq=9" (i know the IRQ is right, but not sure about the IO...anybody
familiar with those older cards know what they defaulted to?) and it loaded
the module, but playmidi keeps yelling about "dev/sequencer" not being found.
About a year back with Redhat 6.0 I do remember having a /dev/sequencer
but now I don't, and I don't remember how I got it :) Can I "makdev" that
and set that to "point" to the MPU-401 somehow?

There seem to be a lot of pieces to the puzzle that I can't put together
correctly. If anyone out there who has a old MPU-401 (or even that
doesn't, and knows how to do this stuff) could give me a step by step
custom howto, i'd *really* appreciate it.

Also while I'm at it...I am running Vmware and I made a DOS virtual
machine so I can play all the old Sierra games (space quest, kings
quest...aah memories!). So assuming I do get the Roland card working, I
can set up the sound card option to "/dev/mpu401data" or "/dev/sequencer"
or whatever we get working, and I should be able to have the sound card
work in those games right? For my Win98 Virtual Machine configuration it
points to "/dev/dsp" and sound (digital sound, not midi) works fine, so
it sounds feasible. This is a side question, so if you MPU
know-it-alls don't know this one, i don't mind...i'll experiment. I'd
just like to get my MPU working in Linux right now.

Thanks in advance!!!! If possible, please e-mail any responses to me, as
I check my e-mail more frequently than newsgroups: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Thanks!!!

One thing I had to do to enable procmail for sendmail was tell sendmail's
secure shell 'smrsh' that procmail was allowed by putting a symlink to it
in /etc/smrsh (as root):

cd /etc/smrsh
ln -s /usr/bin/procmail .

Then my ~/.forward file simply contains:

"|/usr/bin/procmail"

It would be wise to use the procmail recipe that backs up your last 32
messages before dumping rejects to /dev/null.

I noticed this too (and at the moment am working through a rebuild of
the compiler to see if it will either provide me with the files, or
some insight about where they were lost - they're certainly in the sources).

7.1's missing most of the c++ headers - it only has the c headers.
(and since I did a full install, and then rechecked for likely rpm's
I don't believe it's simply that I didn't install the right part).

probably a broken spec file...

Put a public_html with a sample index.html in /etc/skel which is used as a
skeleton home dir for new users.

Not sure where this is set when a user is added, but the usual RH default
of 700 would have to be changed to at least 701 before apache could access
their public_html (public_html would typically be 755).

Check /var/log/messages during boot and see what that says about your
modem. It should beep twice during boot for each pc card, but is possible
that it is using an irq that is used by something else later in the boot
process.

See what 'cat /proc/interrupts' shows when the card is not working and
after you reinsert it. Also see what various 'cardctl' options show for
it in both states. Maybe you can lock out the problem irq from
/etc/pcmcia/config.opts.
