it desn't say "fd type", it says "fs type", indicating you told it to
mount a H1440 filesystem, which obviously doesn't exist.
You can mount with mount -t msdos /dev/fd0 /mnt/floppy

fstab does NOT show you what IS mounted but what you CAN mount.
mount shows you what is mounted.

Yep, your disk wasn't formatted, or not formatted with the expected FS
(ext2 according to your fstab)

Won't hurt, but won't do what you want either. /dev/fd0 is not a file on
your HDD, look at it more closely (ls -l /dev/fd0). you get something
like this:
brw-rw---- 1 user floppy 2, 0 May 5 1998 /dev/fd0
The b tells you that fd0 is a block special device, a c would mean a
character device (look at some other listings in /dev)
You could use cp if the file you're copying there contains a filesystem,
and thus would be a disc-image.

Yeah, you probably just created it, by copying /etc/syslog.conf to
/dev/floppy
No big mystery sofar.

So the basics:
format the floppy with mkfs (mkfs.dos, mkfs.ext2, whatever you want)
mkfs.ext /dev/fd0
(BTW mkfs.ext2 is the same as mke2fs)
then mount it,
mount -t ext2 /dev/fd0 /mnt/floppy
(I assume /mnt/floppy exists, else create it with mkdir /mnt/floppy)
/mnt/floppy must be an empty directory!
now show to yourself that it's really mounted,
mount
(/mnt/floppy is in the list)
cd /mnt/floppy
Your on the floppy now :-)
(you don't need to go here to copy stuff here ofcourse)
cp /etc/syslog.conf .
cd
(leave the mounted directory)
umount /mnt/floppy

Yes, you can, just make that partition the active one, and for the rest
there are no differences.

Yeah, Corel installs LILO in the MBR, without asking permission. What's
worse, Corel 1.2 *RE*-installs LILO this way on every boot or shutdown
or some such. Even if you edit /etc/lilo.conf to install LILO elsewhere,
the system trashes the MBR every time. That's extraordinarily annoying.

Yes, the 23M means 23 megs. I originally had 16M but Red Hat gives it an
additional 7M when setting up the partitions. But I don't think this can be
the problem though.

I setup the 517MB as equal to the size of the physical memory. This will be
server, with a lot of traffic. The other 517MB <swap> is setup for RAID
purpose. Do you why does the installation hangs at the end?

Check? Nothing, just run printtool (as root), select the driver that
fits the most to your printer, run the tests, and keep us informed.

Subject: user account
Date: Wed, 30 Aug 2000 11:17:55 -0400
During installion of Redhat Linux 6.2, besides setting the password for
root, I can also setup a few more user account. So I add a user account
"boredegg" to it; Is the user account created during installation the
same as the ones I add with "linuxconf"??
The UID of "boredegg" is automatically set to 500, but I wanted to add
another user account "admin", which I'd like to have a UID less than my
normal user account, like "boredegg". Then I launched "linuxconf" and
edit the "boredegg" account's username to "admin" and also all the other
settings except the UID 500. But that didn't work, so I deleted the
"boredegg" account and added the "admin" user account with the UID 500.
That worked fine. Problems came after I added back "boredegg" to UID
550. It worked fine in some ways, like telnet, ftp, etc. But when I
login to Gnome using "boredegg", core dumped. I tried it several times,
still. I even deleted the "boredegg" account, restarted and added it
again, still.
So I'm now worrying if there may be conflict somewhere if I add a user
with same username, which had already been deleted?? Or would it be
because that "linuxconf" didn't update all the necessary files so there
may still be some settings for "boredegg" with the old UID or related
things??
This is really puzzling for me. Could somebody give me a hand?? Thank
you very much.
Best Regards,
Anson

Well blast it!!! It was the format of the file ...
I had:-
<exported_fs> (rw,no_root_squash)
thinking that leaving the blank would apply to all machines. In fact, even
when I put in a wild card there (*,?) it doesn't work ... but never mind
that, I can have multiple entries

I post the story because I saw a lot of questions like how to

Well, my advice is to get the Stylus printer driver for gimp called
stp, build the GIMP pluggin, get the latest ghostview sources from
Alladin and add this printer driver to them. I've done so for the
Stylus photo 870 and it prints anything at any resolution, including
perfect photos. This driver supports a large number of Epson Stylus
printers.
Success --- Jan
P.s. Now I'd like to move my printer about 10 meters from my computer
and they say that will only work using USB. Would that work
without too much trouble on a SuSE 6.4 (2.2.14 with 2.3.x USB
backport) system?

I'm trying to get Exceed to work with a Linux machine. I have
configured it to use XDMCP-Query and pointed it to the machine, which is
running gdm. (I've also tried linking prefdm to kdm instead)
When I start up Exceed I get a plain grey screen as if X is running with

means of logging in)...
Any suggestions?
I have Exceed working fine talking to a solaris machine.
