Subject: how to change root partition in boot floppy
Date: Fri, 01 Sep 2000 20:56:59 GMT
I dual boot to RedHat Linux6.0 or win95 with a boot floppy. My HD
config is
/dev/hda1, hda2 <hda5> (All windows (C:, E:)
/dev/hdc1, hdc2 <hdc5 -hdc10>
currently / is mounted in /dev/hdc7
/dev/hdc5, hdc6 are windows partitions.
If I want to convert hdc5 into a linux partition and split the same
partition into 2 partitions, , then the root partition will move
to /dev/hdc8.
In order to be able to boot again, should I log on as root and write a
new boot floppy or is there a way I can edit the existing boot floppy
and merely point to the correct partition.
Likewise, if I move the hdc hard drive to a different machine into a
primary IDE slot, can I change /dev/hdc7 to /dev/hda7 also in the LILO
config files?
thanks

I'll second that. All the extra current flow overcoming startup
inertia/friction/stiction increases heat, the worst enemy of such
equipment. Head crashes are most likely at spindown, when the heads stop
flying.

Subject: ppp failure
Date: Fri, 01 Sep 2000 22:01:55 GMT
I have recently done a big upgrade (oh dear) to let me use XFree86-4.0.1
amongst other things. The problem is that after all the various
dependencies were eventually satisfied (hence the BIG upgrade) I am
unable to get ppp to log in to my ISP. It dials in ok and does the noisy
but it fails to reach the connect phase. I have been monitoring the chat
progress and it fails on an alarm whilst waiting for CONNECT.
I have included a typical session, with a -t 300 chat option (5 minute
timeout, 10 minutes gave the same result).
Using my Win98 machine on the same line to the same ISP connects fast,
first time.
Any suggestions?
Regards,
Peter.

Sure there is!
Ever heard about LILO?
Probably your BestLinux doesn't configure LILO during installation, but let me tell
you, LILO
is the coolest boor manager ever. You can have 10 OSs and boot all of them Allright.
just go find some documentation on how to configure lilo.
It's pretty easy.

Yes. If you need a sort of reference installation build your systems
yourself.
In any case never never never just overwrite the source tree. mv the
previous one out of the way, say rename it and use a fresh one.

It depends and being careful with pre-installed modules might be
a good idea. Of course bugs might bite you too - or might magically
go away ;)

man smbprint, man printcap
Printing to a SMB printer from a Linux box requires both Samba tools and
a printcap that matches the printer. If you happen to be running SuSE,
it's fill-in-the-blanks in YaST, but I dunno about GUI setups in other
distros. I expect that they're there, though.
As I have to set this up on a Slackware box next week, I'm anxious to
see what everybody else says.

That should usually be possible, yes.

Try the following links (apologies for having to wrap the long lines):
ftp://ftp.corel.com/pub/linux/CorelLinux/dists/corellinux-1.2/main/
binary-i386/make_3.77-4.deb
ftp://ftp.corel.com/pub/linux/CorelLinux/dists/corellinux-1.2/main/
binary-i386/hdparm_3.3-3.deb
If you're on Corel 1.0, then there are similar packages there (in fact,
they seem to be exactly the same versions, so just replace "1.2" with
"1.0" above).
If you can't find these in Corel Update, then you might want to check
that you've got it configured correctly. It'll probably be easier to set
this up properly than to try to track all the package dependencies
yourself. :) Alternatively, you could just use Debian's "Advanced
Package Tool", or apt, with which you can type 'apt-get install make' or
'apt-get install hdparm' and have the whole thing done for you
automatically.
Hope that helps,

You need to install the glibc-devel package. You'll also need binutils
in order for the compiler to be able to produce executables.

Yes - look into the lilo (LInux LOader) package. It comes with an
extensive manual (in /usr/doc/lilo or similar), a good man page ('man
lilo') and with any luck some examples from which you can work out a
configuration that suits you.
Remember to run '/sbin/lilo -v' as root after any time you change
/etc/lilo.conf and want to have your changes saved into the boot record
for the next time you start up.

Slackware always distributes "clean" original kernel sources. If
patches are needed, they would be applied to the pre-built kernels
in the distribution, but when you install the kernel source package
you get the real thing.

For whatever reason the modem isn't returning CONNECT. Does the same
thing happen if you try with minicom? I think something has gone a bit
wrong with the initialisation to make it return CARRIER rather than a
normal CONNECT message.
Workround: make the script accept CARRIER instead.
Fix: send correct combination of AT commands.
Not a problem with pppd itself.

Subject: Trying to install Linux Mandrake 7.0, where in heck is KDE?
Date: Sat, 02 Sep 2000 00:17:59 GMT
I ran through the GUI installation process, and everything seemed to
go well. It installed X Windows, I could reboot and login with the
root user....
But no KDE. This became apparent from previous posts here when people
said if I typed "startkde" in the xterm and nothing happened, then KDE
was not installed.
Well I went into the xterm and typed "startkde" and it said the
command was not found....
So where is KDE, and how do I get it on my machine? I'm installing
from the Mandrake 7.0 set you buy retail in stores, and I really would
like to get a UNIX system going (already failed miserably in my
attempts to install FreeBSD), but I'm completely lost now...
Any assistance would be appreciated
