I use a 486/100 with 20MB.
Eveything's fine, could do with a bit more memory though.

There's an awful lot of 486's running Linux out there.

i want to install redhat or mandrake on my laptop.

i hooked up my laptop to the ethernet network and want
to do a pcmcia
install. i use the mandrake 7.1 pcmcia boot floppy, (
same as the redhat floppy), the startup image
comes up, i choose "HTTP" as install media, i choose
"DHCP" as IP, enter
the download site and directory, and that's as far as
i get. the
                  program writes "Retrieving base/mdkinst_stage2.gz..."
(on redhat that is called inst_stg2.gz or so), and after 15
minutes (!) it finally decides that it does not work:
"Unable to
retrieve the second stage ramdisk: Failed to connect
to server".

the same problem occurs when choosing "FTP" instead of
"HTTP" and
choosing an ftp server instead of an http server. in
fact, the same
problem (and the same 15 minute wait!) occurs when i
type a wrong ftp
directory. the network seems to be working though:
when i mistype the
server name, i get an error message within seconds.

                  any ideas?

I have this on RH6.2. Have no idea what ghc is or why it needs it. If
memory serves, this may be in the errata somewhere. IOW, this version is
an update.

[hal@feenix hal]$ rpm -qa | grep stylesheet
stylesheets-1.54.13rh-1

Is ghc documentation related?

It refers to the stylesheets package, which -- at least on Red Hat
systems -- contains Norman Walsh's modular stylesheets for DocBook,
plus some supporting scripts and files.

Hello,

1) You cannot use DOS's fdisk to create a Linux partition. You need to
use Linux's fdisk to do this. Unfortunately, you need Linux installed
somewhere on your computer to do this.

BUT!!!

You do not need to format part of your HD for it to be ready for Linux.
If your CDROM Drive is bootable, then all you need is pop in that
Linux-Mandrake CDROM # 1, reboot your computer and follow instructions.
You format your HD along the way as you're installing Linux-Mandrake.

If you cannot boot from your CDROM, then you really need to free up that
floppy drive of yours to be able to install Linux-Mandrake.

2) Yes! Linux-Mandrake can be made to install on your computer's DOS
partitions. It's called Lnx4Win. No need to format a Linux partition.

Hope these helps.

Have a nice day.

log in from a rescue disk, switch to a terminal and you will have
passwordless root-access.
The distro is not critical for this.

Hello,

That's because X need to write a few temporary files into the /tmp
directory. Having your HD full means there is no place for X to write
these temporary files.

An equivalent problem will be to change the permission on your /tmp
directory to 444 (read only). X will complain the same way.

Hope this helps.

Have a nice day.

If you have space (a spare partition) on your HD, then use this for your
Linux-Mandrake. You do not have to move any of your Caldera partitions.
Otherwise, you're looking at a lot of work.

Please write if you have any more questions.

Hope this helps.

Tell us about it after the dust has settled on your triple boot quest.

I personnaly have Win98, Win3.1 & two separate installations (an extra
and a main) of Linux-Mandrake on my system as quad boot. The 'extra'
Linux-Mandrake installation is there to rescue the 'main' installation
if it stops working properly.

It's always easier to buy a boxed set. My opinion.

I'm using Videotron cable modem. They supplied a DLink ISA card for a NIC.
Windows sees it as an SMC eZ Card and uses an NE2000 compatible driver. I
can't get RH 6.0 to recognize this card. I've tried linuxconf, netcfg and
ifconfig with various errors. I can set it up in linuxconf and specify the
irq and address but it doesn't work. I try to activate it in netcfg and it
says "delaying initialization of eth0" or something.

Trying with ifconfig -i eth0 it reports that there is no pci card, use
io=0xNNN. I assume this is the address so I try this and it says that it
can't initialize the card.

Any ideas? Should I give up and buy a decent NIC like an Etherlink?

Add another extended partition, mount it under /usr/local (after
moving any data under /usr/local to the new partition), and
when you install staroffice, make sure it will be placed under
/usr/local.

For mac's, maybe, but shouldn't be any problem in Linux.

If you can see the mac server from a windows machine (I assume
that's why you want samba on the Linux), just map the Mac, and
the Linux machine, and drag'n'drop it over. Not the fastest
way, but probably the easiest (and 15GB isn't that much - we
routinely transfer 40 GB over the net - takes a couple of hours).

You might not even have KDE on your system yet. The first time I
installed Mandrake 7.0 I did something like a custom server install, and
I had checked Gnome, but not KDE and ended up with neither. I redid a
standard custom "upgrade", selected KDE and probably a bunch of related
packages and then it was installed.

So maybe you need to resinstall, but select "upgrade" instead of new
installation, and then you should be able ton istall KDE.
