Subject: setuping up Linux to a SCSI HD machine

My machine has an adapect AHA2940U2W SCSI card which is connected to an
IBM 9gb SCSI HD model DNES-309170. I want to run Red Hats 6.2 setup
and have it installed but I cant make it work. This is the first time I
install Linux on a computer with a SCSI adapter. When I run setup the
system recognizes the SCSI module aic7 but then it just locks. I wonder
if I have to pass any parameter such as rescue on the setups initial
screen of Red Hats.
Thank you for your help!

Subject: Wiped Linux but LILO still there
Date: Sat, 02 Sep 2000 20:29:05 GMT
I used to share my 10gb drive between Linux Mandrake 7.0 and Windows 98SE.
However I wiped the Linux partition using Partition Magic 5.0 Pro as I
want to use 2 seperate drives for 2 seperate OS's. The problem is that
LILO still wants to boot into Linux(which isn't there) as a default. This
means that I can no longer turn on my PC and leave it to come on, as it
tries to boot Linux, with obvious results. Can I either remove LILO
altogether or at least make Windows the Default OS? I know very little
about Linux, so please be gentle!
Thanks in advance!
Alan.

Can anyone tell me if there is a product or a way to setup a proxy server
with dial up capabilities, i.e., allowing anyone on my network to make a
request and, if there is no current connection to the ISP, disl up and
establish the connection. Earlier I tried diald but despite a lot of input
from several and a lot of elbow grease I was unable to make it work.
Currently I am using a product call WinProxy on an NT workstation that works
like a charm. It was easy to setup and configure and has been easy to
maintain. But I would certainly prefer to have a linux server in that role,
but the pain and trouble of diald was too much.

Subject: Can't make initrd-2.2.16.img
Date: Sat, 02 Sep 2000 21:38:21 GMT
Hi,
I'm kind of new at this so please bear with me.
I'm trying to configure Kernel 2.2.16 with Redhat 6.1. When I execute
the mkinitrd /boot/initrd-2.2.16.img 2.2.16 command I get the following
message:
mount: the kernel does not recognize /dev/loop0 as a block device
(maybe'insmod driver'?)
Can't get a loopback device.
What does this mean? How can I fix it?
The book I'm reading (Red Hat Linux 6 Server by Kabir) shows the img
file listed in the configuration segment in the lilo.conf file, but it
isn't listed in the configuration segment for the kernel I'm using now
(2.2.13).
I tried booting into the 2.2.16 kernel without the img file, but got a
kernel panic message saying "can't find the root filesystem". Is not
having the img file the problem or have I got other issues, besides not
having a clue?
Thanks for your time,
Mark

supported by OSS, but must be "manually configured." Am I wasting my

ok wish is the Tcl/Tk interpreter from one of the following packages. umm not
sure which it came from. I didn't discover the problem until a week or so
after I installed them. I'm sure it came a Tcl/Tk package.
Peanut-Linux:/# ls t*
tcl-8.0p2-1.i386.rpm tcl-8.3.1-45.i386.rpm
Peanut-Linux:~# file /usr/bin/wish
bash: file: command not found
Peanut-Linux:~#
Peanut-Linux:/usr/bin# ldd /usr/bin/wish8.0
ldd: can't execute /usr/bin/wish8.0 (No such file or directory)
Peanut-Linux:/usr/bin#
it's got me. I'm new at this Linux stuff, but this problem defies logic.
I bought Sybex Linux Complete (the book) it doesn't help with this sort of
thing.

Thanks for the comments. I have also been having problems in getting a
terminal emulator to work (I prefer Seyon) but I shall persist. All the
connection scripts have been in use and working for a long time (perhaps over
a year now). The connection log I included was with an extended timeout,
using the normal timeout caused the script to fail before CARRIER was
reported.
Before the upgrade the connect scripts ran ok with a default timeout, as per
the following log:-

Any more suggestions?

I totally agree about your diald findings. It took may 2 days before I got it
to work (and I still hate it and I never wish to use it again!)
I suggest that you might use FreeBSD it has a great and easy natd that dials
like a charme and is so easy to setup it took my less then 15 minutes. It is
also more robust than diald.
Other than that you have the same advantages as Linux with FreeBSD it is almost
simular when you look at software availability. To get in to it is also pretty
easy once you hav emastered another Unix variant.

First, you can check out printer compatibility
at this URL:

Most of the HP Deskjets work I think.
If the printer is OK, then tell us more

Do these packages come from your distribution? I wonder whether they use
libc5, and your system uses libc6; or vice versa.

If you have "less", then run "less /usr/bin/wish8.0". The file is
an ELF executable if it has "ELF" somewhere near the very beginning.
A few hundred bytes in (a few lines down in the output, probably),
a dynamically-linked ELF executable will have either "/lib/ld-linux.so.1"
(which means that it is a libc5 program) or "/lib/ld-linux.so.2" (a libc6
program). Your program won't run if you don't have the appropriate
/lib/ld-linux.so.* file, and that could be the thing that "No such file or
directory" refers to.

My PC has an internal 'HAMR 5600 Voice Mail' modem using COM3 which is

Two ideas:
1) at the commandline, try going
switchdesk (then press enter)
May give you a screen where you can choose your
window manager.
2) try this if switchdesk doesn't work:
startx fvwm
If that works, you will get a nice plain-vanilla
window manager and you can do some exploring of
your Mandrake system. Then if you want to install
KDE later on, you can pull it from your CDROM
with the rpm command -- you will have to mount
the CDROM, move to the directory where you mounted
it, and use the rpm command to put it on your hard
drive. If you need help with those you can come
back and ask, but for now see if you can get *any*
window manager up and running just for the
satisfaction of doing so.

during installation you will be asked where you want LILO to be
installed (the boot manager): either on a floppy, the mbr of the hard
drive, or the root partition I think is the last option. Just choose on
the mbr of the master drive and select what OSes you have that you want
to boot to and their labels (what u will type in to boot that particular
OS) and that should be it.
next time you boot you will get the LILO prompt, hitting TAB wil provide
a list of options, typing an option will boot an OS.

Hello,
I have two computers properly (I think) set up with Linux and
XFree86. Their name are 'enterprise' and 'caillou'. I want to use
caillou as a X terminal attached to enterprise. What's the simplest
procedure? I've pored over `man xdm` and `man X` but have not been
inspired yet ;-)
TIA.

Hi all,
My PC runs win98 and Redhat6.0. The Icons on the desktop and the panel
at its bottom are very big; the width of the panel is about 3cm. I
thought the problem is to do with one of the settings on the
XF86config; but which one and how?

I'm trying to use mkisofs to backup some directories:
mkisofs -r -o directory.iso DIRECTRY
and keep getting errors like:
cannot fwrite 2048*1
Also, the -l flag is supposed to allow for long names, but I'm
still getting messages like:
Using FILENAME:001 for ......
Any ideas?
Thanks!

Subject: /usr partition won't unmount on shutdown
Date: Sat, 02 Sep 2000 22:50:09 GMT
Hi All,
I recently purchased a new laptop from "tuxtops" with Redhat 6.2
pre-installed. Annoyingly they had placed /usr on quite a small
partition leaving very little room for new software. I decided to swap
the contents of the /usr and /home partitions, which I did using a "cp
-R" (yes, I know I should have used tar, but all things are obvious in
hind-sight). I then swapped the mount-points of these partitions.
Unfortunately this has created a number of problems, the most serious of
which is that when I try to shut down my machine it hangs, saying that
hda5 (the /usr partition) is busy and can't be unmounted. I therefore
have to switch off my machine and wait for a fsck when I reboot. this
is far from ideal. On a friends suggestion I did a "telinit 1" and did
a lsof to see what files were still open on /usr, unfortunately the only
files I could see open were those I had used to run the lsof command (I
did some grepping, awking, sorting, and uniqing just for good measure).
Another less serious problem is that many of what used to be symbolic
links in the /usr/lib directory are now copies of the file (rpm
complains about this regularly).
Can anyone suggest what might be causing the first problem, and how I
can fix it? I really don't want to have to do a reinstall as I suspect
there are a number of clever things which tuxtops do that I would need
to replicate.
Best regards,
Ian.

I'm having limited success with pppd (2.2 kernel) but I can setup the ppp
connection ok. unfortunately the calling application is unable to resolve
unless I ping an unknown ip address first, and give time for the link to
setup before I use the resolver for the actual download. It may be fine with
a linux network rather than mixed OS's
