Dear all,

    Since my office are using many microsoft products at the backend server,
so I face many problems when choosing Linux as workstation, my main
difficulties fall in:
1. Any email solution in Linux that can connect to MS Exchange server?
2. How can I share the dir in Linux to other MS clients, as well as mounting
their dirs also?

Thx.

Bgds,
Gordon

I had some frustrating problems that seemed to be fixed by switching off

Please post more specific information, such as:

 - What is the output from "/sbin/route"?

Just get the md5sum command from somewhere and run it. If you've got
a straight port from unix, you would probably have to start a command
line window, change to the directory where your ISO image resides, and
say "md5sum *.iso". It will print a long hexadecimal code, which you
then compare to the code published on the mandrake site.

Where exactly do you have problems? As I read this, you do not even
have SuSE installed, but are still trying to get into the setup. Is
that correct?

If so: Whether or not you can boot from the installation CD depends
mostly on your bios. If your bios cannot do that, just run setup.exe
to get started.

Loadlin should not "mount" the CD at all. It is a DOS program, so
your DOS (well, probably Windows) should already have taken care of
"mounting" the CD.

This means that your current kernel (the kernel that is active while
you are building the new one) does not support a loopback device. The
loopback device is a special device that can hold a file system inside
a regular file. It is used while building the initrd image.

You might try something like "modprobe loop" before running mkinitrd.

> I tried booting into the 2.2.16 kernel without the img file, but got a

The image file created by mkinitrd holds essential modules. The
kernel needs these before it can mount your root file system. An
example might be the driver for a SCSI host adapter if your root file
system resides on a SCSI drive and the kernel was compiled without
support for SCSI.

If you cannot manage to get the loop device working, try building a
kernel with all necessary drivers (including those for SCSI) built in.
Answer "y" to the configuration questions, instead of "m" for module.
Include the loopback device as well. Boot into that system, then
re-build the kernel the way you want it. Since loopback is now
available, you should be able to run mkinitrd without any problems.

I am a fresh hand user of RH. I was using RH 6.0 before and everything works
fine.

Problems appears after I had upgrade to RH 6.1 a few days ago. My lan card
(3Com 3C509-TPO) was not detected by the Kernel anymore. I had check all the
network configuration and I can sure the IRQ and I/O addr is OK as I was
using this for RH 6.0 before.

Would anyone give me solution for how to solve it ? OR would RH 6.2 will
solve this problem ?

Joey.

I can only offer you the contents of my /etc/lilo.conf as a guide for
your own setup.

I have one drive which has three partitions. The first is a Linux Native,
the second a Linux Swap, and the third is a VFAT.

The LILO bootmanager is installed on the MBR.

====================
boot=/dev/hda          I suppose this would read boot=/dev/hda1
                                were the bootmanager installed on the first
                                sector of the Linux partition rather than the
                                first sector of the drive (the MBR).

map=/boot/map Make *very* sure the "map" variable is correctly
                                set to point to the map file. Having it point
                                elsewhere would cause that 'LI' problem you're
                                having.

install=/boot/boot.b
prompt
timeout=100
linear
default=dos

image=/boot/vmlinuz-2.2.14-12
 label=linux
 read-only
 root=/dev/hda1

other=/dev/hda3
 label=dos
=========================

If you've changed lilo.conf in any way, be sure to run the
command "lilo" from the shell prompt to implement the
changes, and then reboot.

Cheers,
           Tony.

Show us the output from "X -probeonly". And from "SuperProbe" if you have

Need data. Saying "it doesn't work" isn't useful. The datapoint you
_have_ provided is the card. Thanks! Now we need to see your belief
confirmed with hard output from a program that probes the chipset.
TTThe card is supported, as far as I remember, so either you are using
the wrong driver, or you have configured the right driver wrongly.
The output from X -probeonly will tell us most of that. You might
also consider "X -showconfig" to let us see more driver-oriented info.

Check out such Xblah-HOWTOs as you can find. But this is a trivial
problem ... you can always use the VGA16 driver just to confirm taht
it's X and not your system that has the problem.

Looking at your other log I slightly suspect that it *is* generating the

That ties in with my current theory...

Note that this is "instant". Re-reading the log included with your
original posting I see that the equivalent step took 19 seconds. IRQ
problem, almost certainly.

>Aug 27 09:33:38 linux chat[21736]: CONNECT

20 seconds to CONNECT isn't a problem, remembering that there's all the
negotiation once the remote end answers. In the recent log - see above
- it takes 40 sec from "expect CONNECT" to "CARRIER". This wouldn't
necessarily be a problem in isolation. However...

>Aug 27 09:33:39 linux chat[21736]: Welcome to 3Com Total Control HiPer ARC
>(TM)^M
>Aug 27 09:33:39 linux chat[21736]: Networks That Go The Distance (TM)^M

These two lines follow almost immediately, but in the recent log there's
20 sec delay between "CARRIER" and "Welcome". Going back to your
original posting I see there's a *further* delay of 30 sec before
"Networks..." which is definitely a problem. Sorry for not spotting the
signs first time round.

Did you previously have to use `setserial` to fix the irq for the modem?
If so it's likely that your upgrade trampled on whatever (boot script?)
was setting this.

If you can confirm which irq is being used in Win98 this may help.

Incredible that the latest and greatest Windows is still so stupid. I
don't know about Windows 2000, but in 98 this problem arises if you have
more than one primary and one extended partition per drive. The solution
is to repartition.

I have also been told that this can happen if there are Linux partitions
between Windows partitions. Again the solution is to repartition, moving
all the Windows partitions to the start and all other partitions after.

I guess the folks at Microsoft still can't believe that anyone would ever
use any other OS.

Maybe you could boot up with your rescue disk and mount hda5 and execute
/sbin/lilo presuming of course that your lilo.conf was ok in the first
