After logging in as root, type adduser (or maybe it's useradd) to create a
new user. If you need more info, type man adduser.

Hi. I just downloaded the ISO image of Mandrake Linux, and in the
README.txt it say you can use the md5sum to check the integrity of the ISO
file. Iam currently running win98. Could any tell me how to run the md5sum
command ? or is there any other method to do the integrity check of the
ISO file?

I've have an Amptron 599 LMR with built in video, lan, modem, and
sound.

I'm wondering if this board will work with Corel linux ?

I've read that Corel Linux supports this Mobo and everything is
detected during the install ?

Can someone tell me:

1) How is the 2ed version of Corel Linux ? (I heard the first was a
disaster).

2) Can someone confirm that Corel Linux will support the devices on
this Mobo?

I've installed Mandrake on it and I can tell you the video works fine,
BUT the linmodem drivers (pctel) don't work AND the LAN drivers don't
work either (davicom).

I really don't care about the modem, I would just like to get the lan
and sounds working...

Thanks,

peter

You set it up as a network instead of like a modem, since it is a permanent
network connection. I am not familiar with Winlinux; however, if you can run
netconf (as root, of course,) you can pretty much point and click your way to
the blanks that need to be filled in with the information provided by your
cable provider.

Someone with more knowledge of WinLinux 2000 will probably be able to help more.

Sounds like you want to make your resolution different -
first try going cntrl-alt-plusonthekeypad or
cntrl-alt-minusonthekeypad

Sometimes that works, sometimes it doesn't. Depends on
some choices you made during your install.

If you have the program xvidtune (have to be running X to
make it work) you can tinker with the settings there.

If you want to use Xconfigurator you can tinker there.
You will be changing the number that looks like "800x600"
to the next larger pair of numbers, that's my best
guess from your description.

If you are running SuSE there is a part of the install
program (SaX) that lets you click arrows until you get the
screen the way you want it.

If you want to edit XF86Config you can change the numbers
in that file; again, you're changing the number pair
with the x in between like "800x600." In XF86Config you
can just comment out the ones you don't want, but it's a
relatively confusing file to edit. There is a way to edit
this GUI-style using linuxconf but I don't like linuxconf because
it messes around with the permissions on files behind
your back, and also sometimes seems to leave off the
quotation marks around the resolution numbers which results
in no X at all.

As you can tell I have had to do this quite a few times
myself :-)

Hello,

I have a prob I have done much reading on but have not been
successful. I have my linux box here and a WIN98 SE. I can ping the
linux box from my WIn machine and vice versa. I can get a ppp
connection to my ISP and surf the web, newsgroups and what not on the
linux box. I cannot however get out to the net on my WIN98 machine. I
get "request timed out". I finally figured out how to turn IP
forwarding on. So it is on. I guess my question is what am I doing
wrong in IPCHAINS? this is what I currently have (note: I have tried
many config)

--          tcp    ----    192.168.1.0/24   mlode.mlode.com        any->

Chain output (policy ACCEPT)

What am I doing wrong here?
Any help is appreciated....

I can get that error going into BIOS Setup and disabling the drive which
has my Linux.partition on it.

The 01 is an error code, although one wouldn't think that by the dopey
way it's presented.

In /usr/doc/lilo* the README file says:

0x01 "Illegal command". This shouldn't happen, but if it does, it may
indicate an attempt to access a disk which is not supported by the
BIOS. See also "Warning: BIOS drive 0x<number> may not be
    accessible" in section "Warnings".

<snip>

Warning: BIOS drive 0x<number> may not be accessible
Because most BIOS versions only support two floppies and two hard
disks, files located on additional disks may be inaccessible. This
warning indicates that some kernels or even the whole system may be
    unbootable.

A good first guess would be that the autodetection didn't work. As root, try
running "XF86Setup.

I have RH6.2, but the answer may also apply to RH6.0.

Enter "echo kde > /home/<user>/.wmrc", then reboot.

Unlike the KDE login, the Gnome login doesn't read the .wmrc file
because when I set it to "kde" I still get the Gnome desktop. So if
you're currently presented with the Gnome login, enter "echo KDE >
/etc/sysconfig/desktop". Then reboot.

Looks like if it's a KDE application (don't know this one). Just extract it
to a temp dir with `tar xvfz kexplorer.tgz'
There's probably a readme or a install file in it with instructions.
