Subject: application buttons monochrome - please help

Hi,
I have the following problem when running applications like
netscape, xemacs or gimp:
the buttons are only displayed in monochrome, although the
application can display text/webpages/graphics in multiple
colors.
I am using 24bits color depth, 1024x768, running
KDE on a SUSE distribution.
My understanding is that the buttons should be displayed in full
color (as it happens with StarOffice), so I would be
grateful if you give me a hint so as to why this happens.
Thanks.
Juan.

Thanks for your reply. I must point out that GTE is not supporting Linux

I have a " Rockwell HCP 56K Data/Fax PCI Modem " (IRQ 11) which came
with my Compaq Presario 5400 computer. I have not been able to get the
modem to work with Linux (I guess it's unsupported ?) after running
'modemtool' to configure the port.
Does anyone know how to get this modem to work with Linux (Red Hat 6.0)
Thanks,
Andrew

Unrot13 this;
Reply to: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
I just managed to replace ecgs with gcc-2.95-2 without a huge amount of
dependency problems. The secret is to remome egcs-1.0.2 completely first.
But then I thought it would be nice to go on up to 2.96-52 and make use
of some of the cpu optimizations I found on linux.com. The first
pass sent me after a few more files, like libjgc and libjgc-devel plus
libstdc++ and its devel kit.
Unforch, now gnorpm is telling me I'll kill the whole system if I
replace libc6.1-1so.2 with whatever version the upgrade installs.
I must have 50 or more dependency clashes all blamed on that sitting on
my screen now.
The question is (based on my thinking that these libs really should be
backwards compatible) : Can I tell gnorpm to ignore this and get away
with it?
If so, what would I need to do in the way of resetting the configs so
everything finds its needs.
This is a RH6.2 install with a lot of updates already.
Cheers, Gene

I did some research here and noticed that in the umount man page it
states the following:
Note that a file system cannot be unmounted when it is
`busy' - for example, when there are open files on it, or
when some process has its working directory there, or when
a swap file on it is in use. The offending process could
even be umount itself - it opens libc, and libc in its
turn may open for example locale files.
It looks like this might be what is happening, but if so - how does
umount work under normal circumstances when it must unmount the
filesystem where libc is stored, and why is this no longer happening on
my system?

Hello,
Use the following command. I'm assuming your ppp connection is ppp0
change this as necessary.
ipchains -A forward -i ppp0 -s 192.168.1.0/24 -j MASQ

/usr/X11R6/bin/xvidtune is the program you want. Start it on a plain X
server (best thing to do is to just use "Xwrapper &" and then
"xvidtune -display :0" from a text console. With it, you can modify
modelines so that they result a wider/narrower/taller/shorter video
area. When you're done, just squeeze the "Show" button and it will
produce the full modeline of the mode you're currently editing on the
console. You can then paste it into XF86Config from there - just be
careful to read your laptop display's specs so you won't burn it. :-)

I have experienced mysterious file losses on several RHAT systems. I did not
conclusively determine why files disappeared but took the following actions
and have not lost any since. first I added the sync option to my file system
mount parameters. Second I purchased an inexpensive (around $30) battery
backup so the summer thunderstorms would stop crashing my servers. Third I
locked them in a closet at the school to keep little hands away from the
power switch.

I had diald working great in RH 5.2, including a Perl fifo to monitor and
control it. But I never could get it to work in RH 6.1. My
pppd-demand.txt file at http://www.de-srv.com/linux/ may be helpful for
getting demand pppd working.
You don't really need a proxy. There is a 3-liner in the IPCHAINS-HOWTO
that will get you up and running with ip masquerade. But you have to load
the ip_masq_ftp module to ftp through it. If you have a dynamic IP, you
may also have to plug a 1 into /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_dynaddr.
Note: I run my own caching DNS with zones added for my LAN (DNS-HOWTO) and
haven't tried demand pppd with a dynamic IP. It works fine with my laptop
on the LAN whether it is running Mandrake or Win98se.

I can't seem to get XFree86 4.0.0 to work with my onboard SiS 6326. This
isn't an urgent problem as XFree86 3.3.6 works okay, and Mandrake 7.1
installs both 3.3.6 and 4.0.0. However, I'm curious to see if
performance is better with 4.0.0 and according to the docs the SiS

why I can't get it to work. I suspect that there is a simple solution,
but unfortunately I don't know what it is! I read the docs concerning
SiS cards that came with XFree86 4.0.0 and the docs regarding the new

I would be more than happy to send anyone my XF86Config and the full
text of /var/log/XFree86.0.log if anyone feels that they might know how
to help me out with this one.
Thanks in advance,

Subject: New install

Hi all,
I too am another newbie looking for advice. I've decided to go linux for
all the obvious reasons...
I'm just an operator. I've had a home PC and laptop since the Win3.1
days and now have win89se but never done any programing, partitioning,
sys adim nothing...just a user.
I bought the Idiots guide and it came with Claderas 2.3, I also ordered
RH6.2 but I'm going offshore for two months and it won't arrive before
I return. Is it ok to try to learn the install process with the enclosed
Caldera to my laptop(newer Dell), learn to use linux and later install
RH6.2 over it?
>From what I've read, heard and from reading NG's the install process is
a nightmare for non-unix folks.
Or is this maybe something I should hold off on till I'm back on the
beach and have access to net support and also Redhats support?
Any advice/opinions would be appreciated.
Regards,
-joe
