Has anyone every come across this error:
"unable to set sample size to 16"
I have RH5.2 and it comes with a program called 'play'. When I
'sndconfig' it plays the sample.au but when I try it with 'play' it comes
with the above error.

I've just installed the new Mandrake 7.1 and I'm having some problems
with this version that I never had before with other versions of
Mandrake.
I've configured my kernel for SCSI EMULATION like I always did, I mean
this is not the first time I do it.
THE PROBLEM IS THAT I CAN WRITE, ERASE...CD-ROMS BUT I CAN NOT MOUNT
THEM.
I tried to miunt them as /dev/srX, /dev/scdX, /dev/hdX, like I used to
do in my Mandrake 7.0, but with no result.

Or the sync's are out of the screen's domain, or the resolution is too
high for the screen. Run the config-tools to select another screen (try
standards first - generic svga or something similar) and resolution.

I have the Asus A7V and a IBM 75GXP ATA100 disk. What i want is
some advice installing Linux (Slackware 7.1) on this disk, its the only disk
on this pc and i also want to use the new faster ATA100 interface with
Linux. I tried the cdrom install but it failed to detect the IBM disk. I patched
and compiled a custom kernel on my other machine with the new ATA drivers
from www.linux-ide.org, used that custom kernel on a bootdisk, no go. same fail.
Anyone have a disk image with a working ATA100 driver that i can use to boot
and install Slackware on this box ? The promise controller is named PDC20265
on the Asus A7V mainboard.

Hi all!
It is said in the pvm documantation that it should be able to log in to a
host without beeing prompted for a password aso. All explanations are made
there with rsh or rlogin. But I was told not to use these programs but ssh
for security reasons.
My question is: how do I setup sshon the remote host, so it doesnt prompt
the pvmd on my local hosl for a password?

The choices for authentication method are:
- public-key with ssh-agent
- public-key with unencrypted key file
- host-based
- Kerberos (SSH1 & OpenSSH/1 only)
The relative merits and caveats of these approaches have been discussed
often on comp.security.ssh; refer to the archives.

packages from redhat. I read information from

I still don't know do I need all kernel* rpm? or only need rpm for

Perhaps you meant to say "I guess the folks at Microsoft still can't believe
that anyone would ever DARE
use any other OS".
The problem is that M$ screwed up big-time with their drive numbering scheme and
rather than recognizing and correcting this, they arrogantly continue to

You do *not* have to repartition here or do anything as significant as
that - there's no need to slag off Windows 200 (which is a very good
desktop OS as far as I'm concerned) in this particular case :-)
Go to Control Panel -> Computer Admin. Open the tree to Storage. Open
Disk Management. In the lower part of the window, right-click on the
Linux partition(s), select "Change Drive Letter and Path...", and remove
the letter. This doesn't delete the partition, only the drive letter.

Dear Everybody,
This is the first time that I am installing Linux on a SCSI system. The
computer is a Pentium III, 256mb, adaptec AHA 2940U2W with an IBM 9GB
UW disk of 9GB model DNES-309170. Adaptecs configuration is IRQ 10 I/O
1000h. Adaptecs is SCSI device id number 7 and IBM HD is device number
0.
When I start Red Hats 6.2 install program is does find SCSI module
aic7xxx. After that when It will start loading the graphic install mode
the computer simple hangs. I wonder if I have to pass some sort of
parameter just like when you have a larger IDE hd. Something like "
linux <some string>".
Can anyone help me installing Linux on this computer?

No! Gives away motherboards? Go on... Actually my interum "solution" is
to load Linux on an old 2GB drive I had laying around and just run the
30 GB as my Windows back-up device. I think I'll get a new bare-bones
system before long and transfer all my toys over. My crate is about 6
years old and the new CPUs have a different footprint.
Thanks for the advice.

Is the card PlugNPlay?
Maybe the card IRG/port settings got changed by the isapnp/pnpdump
programs. Check /etc/isapnp.conf
Also, pull out the sound card and see if this temporarily `fixes'

Hi All!
Being the newbie that I am, I recently found out that I need to
recompile my kerneland all that. So I went through the steps as outlined
in the /usr/src/linux-2.0.36/README file. Everything seemed to have gone
find until I ran 'make zImage', then the following error occured:
(this is just the last few lines that contained the error message)
make[1]: as86 Command not found
make[1]: ***[bootsect.o] Error 127
make[1] Leaving directory '/usr/src/linux-2.0.36/arch/i386/boot'
make: ***[zdisk]Error 2
I checked to see if either the 'as86' or the 'bootsect.o' command
was anywhere to be found on my hd but without any success. I'm going to
guess that either the files where not installed or have gone missing since
my installation. What would be the easiest way for me to get these files?
Re-Install some part of 5.2 again?

This is simple.
do:
export $HOME=/the directory/you want
This should work, I'm not sure if it's going to stay this way always, so if not, try
to add this
line to some startup script. Maybe even in Gnome's start up programs.
You can see what's your current $HOME by typing:
export
Gnome changes this. So just run what I wrote above.
Good luck!

I am running 2 of these AMD K6-2 450 machines here at home. The kids
machine is running Win98 and Mandrake 7.0 and mine is running
Slackware 7 (previously Slackware 3.6, heavily upgraded) with no
problems.
I did find that at a minimum Mandrake 7.0 was required to recognize
the SiS530 video chip BUT networking was never an issue. The WinModem
is of course an issue BUT I have always used external modems so that
wasn't an issue for me.
If you are not using Mandrake 7 then the minimum kernel is V2.2.13 (I
think) in order for the Davicom LAN to be compiled without a patch
from the Davicom site. I am not sure on the minimum XFree86 required
for the SiS530 chip but a couple of searches on dejanews should find
it ... I do know that Mandrake 7.0 was the first standard XFree86 that
worked.
Good luck! I do find it to be a good all-round and inexpensive mother
board.

Usually, you can use an utility that comes with Your distro for network configuration.
I don't know what it is in Debian. In redhat it's netcfg.
Good luck.
Other wise, you should edit conf.modules but i'm not a spec here.

AFAICT...
Add 'rtl8139' to /etc/modules (if that doesn't work, I take the easy
option and put 'insmod blah' into /etc/init.d/network).
If you're using Debian 2.2 'Potato', then add the interface details to
/etc/network/interfaces. If you're using 2.1, my /etc/init.d/network
looks like this:
#! /bin/sh
ifconfig lo 127.0.0.1
route add -net 127.0.0.0
IPADDR=192.168.1.2
NETMASK=255.255.255.0
NETWORK=192.168.1.0
BROADCAST=192.168.1.255
GATEWAY=
ifconfig eth0 ${IPADDR} netmask ${NETMASK} broadcast ${BROADCAST}
route add -net ${NETWORK}
[ "${GATEWAY}" ] && route add default gw ${GATEWAY} metric 1
It's a headless server, so I don't know and don't care whether anything
in that causes errors - it works fine for me :-)

If you just want to add it under Linux (so you can read/write to it),
you can try as follows:
1/ One-time event:
- Look-up the partition-data (name, like /dev/hda5)
- make a directory under /mnt (mkdir /mnt/windows)
- type (as root) 'mount /dev/hda5 /mnt/windows'.
2/ More subtil and user-friendly:
- Look-up the partition-data
- make a directory
- add the following line to /etc/fstab:
/dev/hda5 /mnt/windows auto noauto,user
0 0
Editing lilo.conf makes it possible to select another OS at boot-up with
lilo. If it is that what you want to do, it would be wise to post the
output of 'fdisk -l /dev/hda' and the contents of '/etc/lilo.conf' in
this ng.

Try reading the KERNEL-HOWTO @ linuxdoc.org

Thank you for the info, I've got Mandrake 7.1 installed and it did not
pick up the built in network card up. When I run the network config I
can pick a kernel module for eth0, is th davicom driver listed ?
Maybe I missed something during the automated install ???
Is there anything I can do other than a complete re-install ?
The drivers I downloaded from Amptron don't compile correctly.
Thanks again,
Peter
