I have a Dell Optiplex XMT 590 upgraded to an XMT 5120 (120 pentium). I
need to flash the bios but I must be in a pure dos environment to do
so. I created a dos boot disc using "format a: /q /s" from a 98 se
station. There is no autoexec.bat or config.sys and I also deleted
drvspace.bin on the second try. While booting, the system accesses the
floppy, and sits there. When you press a key on the keyboard, it will
access the floppy drive again and give up, but not giving any error
message. If I take the floppy out and press a key, it goes in LILO.
Does anyony know what I should do?

Hi,

I got this message occasionally

kernel: eth0: interrupt(s) dropped!

but I can still acess the network. I wonder what's wrong and how to
fix it. I am running Redhat 6.2. Thanks!

Go to http://zuul.slackware.com and download the ata66 boot disk (it also
supports ata100). HTH

Did you try simply making a Win98se rescue floppy and not removing
anything. I think it should give you a menu to boot to DOS with or
without cdrom drivers. If you do not have room for the flash files on
that floppy, you might copy command.com to it, if that is still used by
Win98se DOS.

I have mandrake 7.1 with the latest Grip.
I am using the NotLame encoder based on the latest LAME.
I can use the program fine whilst logged in as root.
But if I am using my normal account I get a segmentation fault.
Just what could be causing this.
I cant think of any files that need to have there permissions modeified...

Has it ever been bootable? How did you add it? If you used Windows setup
to install it I would think it would be complete. If you copied it from
somewhere else, maybe you are missing system and hidden files. Once it it
is bootable you just add it to lilo.conf like this and run lilo (change
hda3 to your actual partition, but don't change the table):

other = /dev/hda3
  label = win98
  table = /dev/hda

Never used Exchange. Fortunately our company uses a Linux box for smtp

Samba can do Windows file and printer sharing. Also look for StarOffice
which can import and export many MS Office files as long as they do not
use VBScript macros.

On a system that has been upgraded from Debian 2.0 (or thereabouts), at
some point my /etc/init.d/network file had the following text appended to
it:

# (added automatically by netbase upgrade)
#
# In new Debian installations, this file is deprecated in favour of
# the ifup/ifdown commands (invoked from /etc/init.d/networking), which
# can be configured from the file /etc/network/interfaces.
#
# If you are receiving SIOCADDRT errors, they can be avoided by adding
# a netmask and interface to your "route add -net" lines. eg,
# route add -net 127.0.0.0
# becomes:
# route add -net 127.0.0.0 netmask 255.0.0.0 lo
#
# Alternatively, these lines can simply be deleted if you don't use 2.0.x
# series kernels.

First, a few questions :
Does the modem simply hang-up, or does wvdial give you an output message ?

If the modem simply hangs up, it might be that you don't have PPP support
enabled in your kernel, see to that and it should work.

If wvdial gives you an output message, what is it ?

Well, first of all, your cdrom should not be the master of your hard drive,
unless you did that for a good reason, change it. Second, you must disable
the UDMA66 option during install, there is only one distribution that can
handle it during setup and as far as I know it is not Suse (It's the
distrbution of Asus tech), so do your install in DMA33 mode, then download a
patch, and re-set the UDMA66 option.

Hope this helps.
If it turns out that Suse 6.4 supports UDMA66 during install, please feed
back on me.

What resource/magic does one need to set to get gnome-terminal to
save more lines? For xterms I've used
XTerm*SaveLines: 4096
XTerm*saveLines: 4096
But this doesn't work for gnome-terminal.

That sounds like an excellent idea, especially since I have most of the
stuff already, only need the old motherboard with CPU, case and monitor.
Have to investigate those network cards, don't know anything about them.
But I like the idea of simulating the real thing and having access to both
ends of it for a change.

I'm using Mandrake 7.1 and everyone is saying that the Davicom lan
(dm9102) on my Amptron 599lmr (PCCHIPS) should be auto-detected...and
that it can also be setup with netconf, the only problem I have with
the netconf command is that I don't know what the name of the driver
is, the file is "dmfe" but nothing like that is listed in the Kernel
Module setting.

Can someone help me setup this lan, step by step.

linux.3dfx.com should have the drivrs you need. I have the same card,
only its PCI, and it works great. BTW, after you install the drivers,
don't run the X configurator. Edit your XF86Config file instead.

One other thing that can cause unmount errors in shutdown, is if the drive
is nearly full. "df" or "df -h" is the command for discovering if this is
a problem.

Don't worry about drivers. in netconf, simply add another interface. you'll
need to know what kernel module is required by the ethernet card - there's
information on the internet about this - and next, configure the interface
for DHCP and auto on at boot. Could also be that windows needs its internet
connection terminated before winlinux can take over - run winipcfg in
windows, and release the IP address for the card.
good luck with that.

seriously. My Compaq 486/66 w/24megs of ram and 1 gig hard drive did better
with X and Red Had than it did with Winblows 95. It kinda sucked, but now I
