And since your kernel now includes the required SCSI driver you no

Assuming the first partition is hda1 and you format the remaining 10 Gig
as hda2, your Linux partition, and hda3, a swap partition, then install
Mandrake as per usual, including making a boot disk - very important!
When installing LILO, put it on hda2 (IMPORTANT - don't put it in the
MBR!). You can then use bootpart (shareware) to create a file (call it
bootsect.lnx) that'll boot to hda2. Add this to boot.ini as:
"Mandrake Linux 6.0"=bootsect.lnx
bootpart can run only under DOS, so you may have to boot using a DOS
diskette to run it if you haven't got DOS on your system.

Subject: Help: What Is A Bootable CD-ROM?
Date: Mon, 04 Sep 2000 08:32:09 GMT
I want to know what makes a CD-ROM a bootable CD-ROM.
Is it in the hardware of the drive itself or is it in the way the
computer is set up?
I am familiar with ATAPI drives and that they require a driver in
order to run - and this unlike the EIDE drives that can boot from
the BIOS. (If I am missing the boat here, please let me know).
Does this mean that an ATAPI CD-ROM is not a bootable drive or
is there a way to make it a bootable drive?
Thank you for your comments and thoughts.

Ok, here are two of the more irritating "features":
The primary one is that accepting incoming messages takes priority
over actually delivering them. When your server is pretty small and
not getting much traffic that's not a problem. When you reach larger
volumes of incoming traffic Qmail still accepts messages but they just
sit around in the preprocessed queue.
Another problem is its behaviour when trying to deliver messages to a
site that's unavailable. Qmail will start to deliver each message
(one message only per connection - not exactly network friendly) even
when it knows that the site it's trying to deliver to is unavailable.
It has to start a new process before it finds out that the delivery
isn't going to succeed. Again, for small sites that's not really a
problem, but for larger ones this quickly eats resources that would be
better used elsewhere (take a look at the Qmail list archives for the
number of times people have seen this problem when the likes of
Hotmail disappears off the network for a while.)

Hey, Blood... I run Red Hat 6.2 on a three year system which sports a Cirrus
Logic 5465 AGP video card, too. X works fine. However, during the time I
was using an old Slackware distribution, X froze when resizing a window,
opening XChess, and running some screensavers.
In RH6.2 you should have the following section in /etc/X11/XF86Config
Section "Device"
Identifier "Cirrus Logic GD5465"
#Option "fifo_conservative"
VideoRam 4096
EndSection
Try including Option "xaa_no_color_exp", Option "no_pixmap_cache",
and Option "sw_cursor" in the section above.
They solved the lockups and drawing problems under Slackware.
If that doesn't work, maybe you'll find something of use in /usr/
X11R6/lib/X11/doc/README.cirrus.
Cheers,
Tony

While I really don't know very much about linux (I'm administering an
NT-network, and I STILL think, that as a _desktop_ OS, Win2K is better
suited than linux! ;-) I have tried my luck on Suse 6.3 from time to
time (not that it would like my GeForce graphics adapter or the way I
prefer to partition my HD, but still...). Speaking from that
experience I'd *guess* that just like Suse, RedHat has the option to
boot from CD-Rom. Suse offers several boot-options, one of them being
boot from CD, start from HD. This worked for my installation, even
though there was no lilo at all and suse wasinstalled way beyond the
1024- (or whatever) cylinder-border. I'm sure RedHat has a similar
option for you.
Once you've booted into your system, re-installing lilo shouldn't be a
problem.

I assume that is "does not exist". Does it? See if there is an empty
directory /mnt/cdrom/ (you will have to create it if it is not there).
(my setting in /etc/fstab---/dev/hdd /mnt/cdrom iso9660 noauot,owner 0

well, then you would have to do a mount /dev/hdd (there is no entry
telling it how to mound /dev/cdrom) or change the entry in fstab to
/dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom iso9660 noauto,owner 0 0
> 2)when i exec mount /fd0/floppy, system respond "fs type vfat not supported

What's the fstab entry for this? And don't you mean "mount /dev/fd0"?
Can you mount ext2 filesystems on floppies?

These components are not included with a client install, so you need
to add these later.

Just login with your login name and password; if you don't have any
make one using the useradd command.

Replace the contents of /etc/inputrc with the following lines
set meta-flag on
set input-meta on
set convert-meta off
set output-meta on
set editing-mode vi
The last line is magic and gives you permanent "set -o vi". Some of
the options of the original /etc/inputrc conflicts with vi mode.

Maybe you got similar problem like me.
I wanted to have Linux on my w98 OEM computer. I used fips to split 19 Gb

I have recently installed SuSE Linux 6.4. Everything was going ok at first,
but now LILO refuses to work properly. I have a 30GB hdd, and whenever I
try to setup LILO it does warn me about the partition being over the 1024
cylinder limit, however it was working in the beginning, so presumably this
isn't a problem.
The actual problem is that wherever I install LILO (whether it's in the MBR,
the boot partition, or the root partition), I simply get LI, and nothing
else. I have read this problem may have something to do with the drive's
geometry, and I did get messages from PartitionMagic that there were
mismatches, but even when it fixed these problems, there was still no joy
with LILO.
Does anyone know anything about this problem; What other causes for "LI" are
there? More specifically, does anyone else have a linux partition over the
1024 cylinder limit and having problems?
Phil Evans.

Seems you're trying to mount a CDRW like you would a hard drive or a
floppy.
I don't think you can do that at all. Mounting already-burned CD's is
okay
(as you found out). To write to a CDRW, you need to use a software
package
such as cdrecord. It's not as simple as just mounting it read-write and
writing to the filesystem. Before a disc is burned, there is no
filesystem
in existence; after it's burned, it's read-only.

Subject: Duron, LILO, RedHat 6.2 probs?
I put together a computer with a socket A motherboard and a Duron 700MHz
CPU. After trials and tribulations Windows was installed (an unfortunate
necessity ;) ) and that worked.
I then installed Red Hat. And that did not work. If I turn my computer on
now the lilo prompt is for some reason getting stuck on LI. The boot disk
works, but only has a linux record in it.
This sounds like the lilo probs with large disks from other posts on here
and i can probably deal; with it eventually. But I also have another
problem.
The new linux partition doesn't boot. After loading the kernel in, it boots
and finds the Duron processor . . . .
CPU: AMD AMD Duron(tm) Processor stepping 00
Enabling extended fast FPU save and restore...done.
Disabling CPUID Serial number...general protection fault: 0000
Then lots of numbers and Stack numbers are printed in hex which i can copy
if they help. This all finishes with a kernel panic and the whole thing
hangs.
Any help would be REALLY appreciated. I am sorry for the crosspost but I
honestly didn't know where the problem is.

1) A guess would be that running 'mkdir /mnt/cdrom' would fix this
problem.
2) You probably need to run 'modprobe fat; modprobe vfat' to insert
modules which have not been loaded. I am assuming the modules are there
however.
Hope this helps...
