did oyu have you manually delete files or could you select it during
install time? I haven't used Slack since 1.2.1 and really can't
remember anything about it :(

Assuming that you have configured your compile correctly, have the versions
(or newer) of programs mentioned in the
/usr/src/linux/Documentation/Changes file, then maybe you have the same
problem I ran into, and I got error messages that looked just like that.
What helped me was to uncheck the smp option and _not_ select the option
under Processor Type & Features for "APIC and IO-APIC Support on
uniprocessors". This would become visible after unselecting smp while
running make menuconfig or xmenuconfig..... Good luck, /ts

Glad it helped.

Short answer: There is no short answer, it depends on the network card
(don't quote me on that).

Typically, I would say "Use the DOS based setup utility", but then I see
you're on a sparc, so that's obviously out of the question.

Another likely thing it could be is that you have, say a 10Mbit NIC, and
the hub is 100Mbit, and both are non-negotiable (happened to me not so
long ago).

You need to inform the company that hosts your DNS. When you set up the Domain
Name you provided the name of the DNS server you were using. You need to
contact them and change the record to point to your IP.

MySQL is free and open source for Linux. It is well documented and there are
many places to get help with it. MySQL can be accessed through PHP which is a
web page scripting language that is designed to interface with databases.
Apache/MySQL/PHP is a great solution when you get it running together, I do
PHP/MySQL programming for web pages.

The easiest way is to install PMFirewall, it will set up all your rules for you
from questions it asks you. Then tell the Win98 comp to use the Linux comp's
IP as a gateway, add the DNS server IP's and you should be good to go.

You do realise that these 2 drives will have the same transfer rate when
installed on the ATA66 controller don't you. I feel pretty certain that your
drives don't have a sustained transfer rate over 30mbps, much less 66mbps.

Subject: Re: Adding ide-scsi for CD Burner
Date: Thu, 01 Feb 2001 06:30:30 GMT

$ dmesg
check out the lines to find out where your CDROM is set up (hdb, hdc, or
hdd)

I found it easier to use the ide-scsi emulation modules. Here are the
instructions.

$ su -
password: <scret>
# # RH6.2 is conf.modules RH7.0 is modules.conf
# cp /etc/modules.conf /etc/modules.conf.bak
# vi /etc/modules.conf # use your favorite editor to edit modules.conf

Modify modules.conf for your CDROM writer, my CDROM is located at
/dev/hdc

Here is my conf.modules

# --- add this to your conf.modules  -------
alias scd0 sr_mod
alias scsi_hostadapter ide-scsi
options ide-cd ignore=hdc
# --- end -------

# cp /etc/rc.d/rc.local  /etc/rc.d/rc.local.bak
# vi  /etc/rc.d/rc.local

# --Put this at the end of the rc.local---
# load ide-scsi module
insmod ide-scsi
#---end---------

# cp /etc/lilo.conf /etc/lilo.conf.bak
# vi /etc/lilo.conf

put the append statement for /etc/lilo.conf your cdrom
'append="hdX=ide-scsi"' and run lilo.
Here is /etc/lilo.conf, my CDROM is located at /dev/hdc

boot=/dev/fd0
timeout=100
message=/boot/message
prompt
image=/boot/vmlinuz-2.2.14-6.1.1
        label=linux
        root=/dev/hda4
        append="hdc=ide-scsi"
        read-only

# /sbin/lilo

Now relink the /dev/cdrom to your scsi emulation of your cdwriter

# mv /dev/cdrom /dev/cdrom.bak
# ln -s /dev/scd0 /dev/cdrom

Reboot. (I don't know how to restart with new conf.modules and rc.local

in linux :( )

Run dmesg to see if your scsi emulation is working after the reboot

# dmesg

I'm running KDE on Redhat on a 640x480 monitor.
I try to run a lot of the tools like
linuxconf, kde control, etc and the window is bigger than
my monitor. I can't shrink them down enough to click OK or CANCEL.

I want to go back to something like fvwm which allowed me to
see the bottom part of my windows.

How do I switch to fvwm?

Is there another window manager that will fix this?

Thanks in advance

Subject: Samba on RH 7.0
Date: Thu, 01 Feb 2001 01:00:26 -0600

I was running RH 6.2 and upgraded to 7.0 and I can't get the Samba
server to work properly. The services still start normally, but my
smb.conf file was renamed to smb.conf.rpmsave, I can't change
smbpasswords and I can't even see the computer on the network. I've
even tried a fresh install of 7.0, but no smb.conf file is even
created. I resorted to downloading fresh RPMs in the case that my
originals were corrupt.  No luck.

It is almost as if the new version of Samba is dramatically different
than the one in 6.2. I haven't been able to find any Samba info,How-To,
etc. that would indicate this though. Anyone have any pointers on this?

The command is called "ipchains" and it is simple to use. You will need
two network cards on the Linux box, one for the external network and one
for the internal network. You can also use an Intel card "Intel Pro/100+
dual port" which has two ports on one PCI slot.

I can' tell. Just look at the file and report back.

I'd put it in the MBR (boot=/dev/hda), but as the other reply mentioned
you have linux partitioned that are beyond cyl. 1024. Without a lilo
version above 21.4.3 it will not be able to boot linux.
(The version RH6.2 installs is to old, so you must upgrade it.)

Similar to Eric's response, 'man tcsh' , look for the command 'limit.'
It may not be as feature-ritch as Bash (I'm just guessing, I only
glanced through the two man pages to compare), but if you use csh or
tcsh, there it is.

Have you carefully examined your XF86Config file? In the section entitled
'Section "Monitor"', pertaining to your actual monitor (not a generic one),
you'll see tons of vanilla "modeline" listings. You're using one of those.
Now, to find out which one, look in the 'Section "Screen"' pertaining to your
graphics card, and see what the default color depth you're running at is
("DefaultColorDepth 32" for me), now, for the following 'Subsection "Display"'
that uses that color depth, look at the "Modes" line: the first set of numbers
(on the left-hand end of the line) is the default screen size to use, referring
to the modeline matching that size above in the Monitor Section. Here's the
rub: sometimes, I don't remember how it happened to me, but that line would be
the reverse of what I wanted, so the smallest resolution was used by default.
Now, to temporarily fix this, you can cycle through the resolution settings by
hitting Ctrl-Alt-<keypad -> and Ctrl-Alt-<keypad +>. If more than one set of
numbers is listed on the "Modes" line, you should see different resolutions.
Then, place the desired resolution on the very-left-hand end of the list of
modes. Next time you run 'startx' it'll start X at that first resolution (as
long as the modeline can be run on your monitor/graphics card.)

Subject: Huge problem installing RH6.2
Date: Thu, 1 Feb 2001 02:51:17 -0500

Hey there,

I can't for the life of me to get RedHat 6.2 to install on my system. I
have two HDs (8GB and 12GB) both with ample free space running Windows
Millenium on Intel machines. When I go to install Linux, DiskDruid reports
that both of my HDs are at 100% full (which they most certainly are not).
Therefore, I can't partition either drive. What can I do??? I would prefer
to not format my drive. Ugh..

I also attempted the partitionless install and it seemed to go the setup,
but hung (multiple times) on the actual install.

Any thoughts??

Thanks
Wade
