Subject: Sorry guys, another X problem
Date: Tue, 5 Sep 2000 20:23:39 +0100
Hi,
I have mandrake 7.1 with X 4.01. I am currently running in 16 bit color and
1152 * 864.
I have installed unreal tournament and it runs great. I went to increase the
color depth to 32 bit and noticed it wasnt an option.
I had a quick look at my X config file and changed the default color depth
from 16 to 32.
Suffice to say it didnt work.
I am using the latest nvidia drivers and all seems well.
I have a geforce 256.
I have included my config file and the X log file (cut down to safe space)
But basiclly it says that 32 bit color isnt supported by the hardware.
thanks
sergio
PS you may also notice that the speedo font wont load. But thats another
post :-)

I tried to confirgure Sanba, but I am really newbie in this way and I used
Gnomba (Gnome interface of Samba) but I found only the way to share
directories on NT server.
And I still not can reach the second ethernet card to have acces to Inet (my
connection to Inet is done thru a ethernet card with ADSL connection) the
message is still Network not reachable (the ip address of the second card
is 10.0.0.10 instead of the local 128.1.0.X)
If you have any idea of what's happening?
Because with W98 I only indicated the IP N of the NT server to connect to
the second card.
hoping your help

I had a very similiar situation recently, my ISDN card
(also Fritz) was up and running but I couldn't get my
network card working (Device or resource busy), turns
out both are trying to use interrupt 10. I haven't solved it yet : (
If you have an installed network card try "unloading" it
with
ifconfig eth0 down
then trying the ISDN again
Good luck

You can't telnet to the internal boxes if you're using NAT or
masquerading. Their addresses aren't reachable that way. What you
need is to use portforwarding in case you want to access certain
services on these internal machines.

Sure, delete /etc/shadow, touch /etc/shadow, vi /etc/password, delete the
contents where the password would be so as to set all passwords to NULL.
Have users log-in and set their password.

Debian is great for such a system too. ftp.debian.org or
http://www.debian.org - The archives contain a stable easy to install distro
call hamm (Debian 2.0) which you install from diskette. Once that is
installed and configured you can download the applications you want using
apt-get or dselect.

And by the way, if I recall correctly, this is one of those cases where
you cannot simply restart Apache. You have to fully stop it, then
start it before it all takes effect.

look at your firewall log. Your firewall is still probably blocking
access so you need to enable connections to come through but w/o looking
at the log it's hard to say for sure.

Subject: How to setup a secure PPP account on Linux?
Date: Mon, 04 Sep 2000 21:02:22 -0500
I seek suggestions on setting up a user account on my Linux box
for connecting to my ISP with Netscape but is secure enough to
limit access/damage from hacker attacks coming in from the web.
Any pointers you would be willing to share with me would be
appreciated.
Please respond to this newsgroup as my email address is
misleading for spam purposes.
Thanks in advance.

Try adding the following lines on the .profile (for korn shell (ksh)) or on
the .bashrc (for bash shell)
PS='`pwd` $'
export PS1
NOTE: The first and the last quote mark s are single quote chars ( by the
Enter key )
The inner quotes are the "tick" , the ones found on the "~" key ( undder the
ESC key).
Yes, the keys do matther.
Good luck.

It sounds like you have low resolution. One cause for that is incorrect
monitor settings. If you chose generic monitor, that will happen. Try
start -verbose &>startxlog
then log out of X and look at startxlog to see if there are any clues.

What error? Without that it's difficult to help.

Don't worry about that; libc5 is obsolete anyway, and only provided for
compatibility purposes.

If the compilation is aborting with a signal 11 or something similarly
weird, then you might have a hardware problem, possibly bad memory. See
http://www.bitwizard.nl/sig11/.

If you want to keep a local mirror of packages, then you need to use the
dpkg-scanpackages program (in the dpkg-dev package) to generate a
Packages file to put in that directory; dselect and apt both need such a
file. Read the man page to find out how to do this. (Beware that you
need to gzip the Packages file after creating it. The man page doesn't
mention this, unfortunately; I filed a bug about this - #65839 - a while
back.)
If you just need to install a few individual packages, then use
something like 'dpkg -i package.deb' instead.

Looks like your shell is setting the window title, perhaps. What does
'echo $PS1' say?
