Subject: HELP! -- Grub tutorial?
Date: 6 Sep 2000 00:09:05 GMT
Hi all; yesterday I tried to remove Caldera technology preview from
my system and install redhat. The redhat install aborted (my
mistake) and now when I reboot I get this "grub" prompt and can't
get any further.
Can anybody point me to a quickie tutorial on Grub?
Quick overview of my situation: I may no longer have a bootable
linux partition. I should have a bootable windoze partition. My
computer won't boot from CD and I lost the floppy drive, so if
I can't make the computer boot from hard disk again, I'm going to
have some real contortions ahead of me.
Fooey, I say. LILO may have been ugly, and a bastard to configure
for newbies, but at least it *worked*.

I have SuSE 6.3 installed and I would like to use my 3com etherlink xl
PCI card to connect to the internet ( 3c900B tpo is the exact product
name). Now SuSE says theres "no information" about that product, while
the vendor claims that theres a driver for linux (it says so in the
'product details'), but on the ftp site, there are only drivers for win,
UnixWare and OpenServer(the latter two-what are they, by the way?).
If there is a driver, where could I getr it? Where do you usually look
for Information of this kind? Can anyone help me?

I have been unable to edit my $PATH or find any info on how to do it.
One article said my path was in the '.profile' file, but neither /root or
/home/<user> directories contain this file.
I magazine article described such utilities as : addpath, delpath, edpath,
listpath, uniqpath, but none of these appear to be in the man or info pages.
Where is the path variable kept and how do I edit it?
Thanks

Which distribution are you running?
On Debian, you should look at /etc/crontab, unless you use anacron
(in which case I think you should look at /etc/cron.d/anacron).

I currently have win98 on a 20gig IDE drive, just 1 partition.
Then, I have Redhat 6.2 installed to a single partition on the 1st SCSI hard
drive (sda1).
When I try to write LILO to the MBR, I get the following error:
Device 0x0801 : Maximum Number of Sectors is 63, not 235.
What do I need to do to fix this, or what are my other options? Thanx alot

Hi folks;
O/S: RedHat 6.1
X environments: GNOME/KDE/MOTIF
I installed MOTIF with the RPM.
I brought it up - works fine.
I want to install it so it is available with the LSM (Login Session
Manager).
I executed the utility, added it to the GNOME/KDE/failsafe/default list.
I backed out of the LSM, went back in and it is listed.
I went to init 1 and back to init 5, but it doesn't show up.
I went back into LSM and it is listed as an environment.
Any ideas?
I've added it to prefdm, put it in /etc/sysconfig/desktop and it works
fine - but I want to see it in the login session screen - like the
manual says it should.

Hi!
I wanted to update Redhat 6.2 kernel 2.2.14-5smp to vanilla 2.2.16smp
in order to
install MOSIX 0.97.7 .
I did
make mrproper
make menuconfig
took the Makefile and uncommented the install directory in /boot
make dep
make bzImage
make modules
make modules_install
At this point was no bzImage or new vmlinuz in /boot si I copied
/usr/src/linux/arch/i386/bzImage
to /boot changed the default to /boot/bzImage (that doesn't have a
initrd-xxxxx as the Redhat installation)
and ran lilo.
When I reboot I get:
scsi: 0 hosts
scsi: detected total.
Partition check:
VFS:Cannot open root device 08:01
Kernel panic: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on 08:01
Does this mean it cannot see the SCSI sda and cannot mount the root?
Is that because the initrd-xxxx is missing?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
