These cards (aka `Boomerang', aka EtherLink III XL) have been released
to take over the place of the 3c590/3c595 cards.
The support for the Cyclone `B' revision was only recently added. To use
this card with older v2.0 kernels, you must obtain the updated 3c59x.c
driver from Donald's site at:
http://www.scyld.com/network/vortex.html
--snip--
(this is the new site)
I think the newer kernels have support for this card already, so it
might just be easier to upgrade to 2.2.17

Hi,
I am looking for a newsgroup server for running an internal (within our
org) newsgroup.
We are especially interested in the following
features:
1. Ability to support 2000 - 3000 users.
2. Web based access.
3. Ability to include attachments (such as word doc, gif file)
4. Costs less than $2500.00.
5. Ability to run on Windows NT/Solaris/Linux.
Could anyone please suggest a few products to try?
Is DNEWS server a good choice?
Thanks in Advance,

Subject: SCSI device assignments question
Date: Wed, 06 Sep 2000 15:34:44 -0400
I installed the Alpha binary version of Debian "potato" distribution. I
have 4 SCSI controllers.
It appears that the disks are assigned in order of controller number and
ID number
Such as,
scsi0, ID 1 -> /dev/sda
scsi0, ID 2 -> /dev/sdb
...
scsi1, ID 1 -> /dev/sdc
scsi1, ID 3 -> /dev/sdd
...
scsi2, ID 1 -> /dev/sde
etc.
My problem is that we have a instrumentation package, lets call it the
widget, that some short sighted
engineer built that is fixed to scsi ID 2. In order to extract the
data, we temporarily hook up the
widget to the computer, it looks like a disk device. If I were to do
this, on controller scsi1, then all the devices get reassigned at bootup
and my fstab entry for /dev/sdd and /dev/sde would be wrong, because the
widget becomes /dev/sdd and the computer disks become /dev/sde and
/dev/sdf.
Is there a better way to handle this other than have two versions of
fstab around, and copying as necessary? Also I want to take four disks,
one on each controller, and make them into a RAID device. So I would
have to update raidtab, each time, as well. Suggestions or pointers to
HOWTO's/FAQ's/Kernel Doc's would be appreciated. Is there a way to make
the system assign disk devices a certain way, or can I reserve a
/dev/sd? letter for the widget when it is not connected?

Mike,
It is internal. The installer did not want to give me an external with
my setup, as it would have had to be USB (which for our purposes would be
worse).
Thanks anyway.

Mike,
Linux had automatically setup all that as DHCP and appears to be
correct. And I did the winipcfg release. But it still needs something else
done. Does it matter that the card is internal (ISA)?
Perhaps it is something very simple that I am missing. Ok, if I am in
Linux, do I need to set up anything else to have Netscape get to its
homepage? As I have no dialup, I'm assuming all the cablemodem settings
are correct via the DHCP setup. So I click on Netscape and it finds no
path to the server.
Thanks,
-- David
<< Don't worry about drivers. in netconf, simply add another interface.
you'll
need to know what kernel module is required by the ethernet card - there's
information on the internet about this - and next, configure the interface
for DHCP and auto on at boot. Could also be that windows needs its internet
connection terminated before winlinux can take over - run winipcfg in
windows, and release the IP address for the card.
good luck with that.>>

You have to port forward port 25 to the mail server that is behind the
firewall
check the indyramp site for more specifics

I see what you are saying. My bad for not reading the problem thoroughly and
miss posting my reply under the wrong post. I thought that Mr. locdawg18 was
trying to install his root to one big partition (i.e. like a windows os).
When I re-read the post I notice the line, "when i tried to assign a root

Don't have multiple scsi, but have you tried the "scsiadd" and add your
"widget" at the END of the chain in scsi-id 2 AFTER the bootup?
Availability is at http://llg.cubic.org/misc/scsiadd or
ftp.cubic.org/pub/llg.
Worth a try as the parameters allow specification of host, channel, id, lun.
Have no idea what "channel" is as host is the scsi-id# (I think) and works
quite well with a single scsi adapter.
Or try: echo "scsi add-single-device scsi#, channel#, device-id, lun"
>/proc/scsi/scsi". I had just used this for my single scsi adapter
and it was posted by someone else on one of the linux newsgroups.
good-luck.

You should trust the error messages :-) NVIDIAs drivers don't support 32
bit mode to my knowledge. Use 24 bit mode instead - you won't notice any
difference. You can't switch colour depth once you have one selected
under Xfree86 either (which is a pity).

For each module loaded there is a library in
/usr/X11R6/lib/modules/fonts/. The one for Speedo fonts is called
libspeedo.a - make sure it exists. Then go into your XF86Config and edit
the line which currently reads
Load "Speedo"
to
Load "speedo"
Note that the case matters.

At least I got my machine back up, with another OS installed now.

Hi,
I have something specific I am trying to do and I know very little about
the whole idea so google searches are taking me around in circles :<
Basically I want to set-up the following on a linux server:
(I think Java Media Framework may be the solution but could not figure it
out yet :<)
1) People can come to a certain place. start a 'chat room' type of thing,
use their headsets and may be their webcams and start a talk with another
user. preferably, this should not involve downloading netmeeting or
cu-see-me. It should be working easily on windows + MacOS aswell as
linux. Java applet based something sounds like a good choice(?)
2) several people can share the broadcast. e.g I talk and 5 people listen.
(so we can host a panel discussion or a talk-show through the internet)
3) all this should be done without having a webcam attached to the linux
server. it is located somewhere 'unreachable'.
4) it should allow whiteboarding or some sort of presentation scheme too.
5) optionally it should be encrypted.
6) it should be free or fairly cheap.
What is the best place to look for this? Anybody done this here?
Am I trying to do too much with too little effort?
thanks a lot,
turgut

I have bootable floppies. I even studied the art of making rescue

Thanx anyway. I eventually found an FAQ on the Caldera page that
