How can I denying users to access to other files in my server.
I notice that when they use ftp, then they can go around any dir and file in
the server.
Thanks

This was *REALLY* helpful! Just the kind of feedback I had hoped for
from this forum.
Now I understand the idea and yes I had rc3.d/K35smb and rc5.d/K35smb
And these files turn out to be symlinks to the "real" script
/etc/rc.d/init.d/smb so I have simply renamed K to S as you suggested.
After this simple change my samba server now starts up with the
operating system startup just like I wanted.
Thanks again!

Hi,
I was recently given an old 386 from a friend of mine and was wondering
if and how I can install Linux on it.
Specifications;
386 cpu
4 MB RAM
250MB hard disk
I don't know the clock rate of the cpu, or the graphics card.
Also the computer has no CDrom drive, just a floppy. I think it has a
network port on the keyboard!! (Thats what it looks like, a little wider
that a modem port, what else could it be ?)
any ideas on how I could install linux on this?
It runs windows at the moment so do you think X will run at all?
I also have a normal windows 98 computer that I'm using now, could I
install linux remotely using my win98 box?
Thanks.

So what's wrong with that. If anybody has anything to hide they can do
that with dir/file permissions. But if you want to restrict them to their
home dir, read: man ftpaccess

I tried qpopper and get the same result. From linux I can also telnet
to port 110 & see the pop3 message, so the server is running. The
problem seems to be access from the NT machine. I also try to telnet
from the NT box to the linux box & that fails.
My hosts.allow is empty (I tried ALL: LOCAL and explicitly the telnet
daemon:
in.telnetd: 192.168.0.x
but get the same results)
So far I have success with either qpopper or ipop3 with other linux
boxes & nothing works with NT.
Any other ideas?
Thanks

Forget about X; install an older version of Linux like SuSE 5.3 or have a
look at http://www.slackware.com. I have installed Linux on an "ancient" PC
with 40MHz and 8MB RAM and it works fine for making backups via NFS and as
a router.

Hy to all
I want install RH 6.1 on an old Laptop (486/50 with 8MB). The Problem
is, i have no CD-Rom and the floppy-drive is defect. Dos 6.1 is
installed. I have a pcmcia-network card and so I can install with NFS:
-I copyed the Kernel and the initd-file from the pcmcia-bootdisk to the
Laptop (per Dos Norton comander over a paralell conection) and started
this with loadlin:
loadlin vmlinuz initd=initd.img
It works, yeahh. The problem is now, i want a setup in textmode. Does
anybody know the parameter for the command to get the textmode. The
graphics mode crashes, but it is the default mode.

Hello,
sounds like a problem with your NT boxs...
Try,
Open MS-DOS Box
ping IP_of_your_linux_box
Working OK - if not adjust your networks setting reboot n times, try again
ping host_name_of_your_linux_box
Working OK - if not there is somewhere a file on Winbloze similar to /etc/hosts
called somehow LMHOST
edit it to get your names setup.
Try connecting to your POP Server and look what it logs in /var/log/mail, if
there is nothing
and all above is working...hmmm ,better try another ng then
comp.os.linux.setup...
Good luck

What sort of "nothing" does rawrite do? Post the error messages.
Remember, when you get done, the disk is unreadable in
DOS/Windows.

Because the other system in misconfigured and has "." in the $PATH variable.
That is a major security hole.

Subject: Serious Partition Problems
We used to have a 15 gig partition under Windows...I partitioned about half to
Linux and half to Windows when I used fips. Things went fine, then I decided
to get rid of Linux and put it on another computer instead. Well, someone
fdisked the partition and did somethning else that really screwed it up. (I
maybe a newbie but I wouldnt do anything that dumb) so it is still partitioned
but linux is gone, lilo starts at boot cuz mbr wasnt fdisked...but I cant
delete the Linux partition I have tried several partitioning programs. When I
tried Partition Magic when it loaded it said "Error #48: Sector not found" and
exited.
??
When a separate program of Partition Magic, called PTEDIT, it shows the
partition info as follows:
Drive 1 (16221mb)
Starting Ending
Type Boot Cyl. Head Sector Cyl. Head Sector
1 0C 80 0 1 1 999 254
63
2 05 00 1000 0 1 1023 254 63
---Continued After Above---
Sectors Before Sectors
1 63 16064937
2 16065000 17157420
Is there any way I can edit those values to fix it without screwing up Windows?
Thanks.

Some thoughts on your LILO problems:
1. The "non system disk" message suggests that your Windows boot partition
is not set active. Try booting from a Windows Boot Floppy, then run fdisk
and set the C: partition active.
2. To arrange a default windows boot, edit your LILO config files global
section to read:
default = win
e.g:
# LILO configuration file
# generated by 'liloconfig'
#
# Start LILO global section
boot = /dev/sda
default = win
#compact # faster, but won't work on all systems.
delay = 50
# VESA framebuffer console @ 1024x768x64k
vga = 791
[snip commented out vga]
# ramdisk = 0 # paranoia setting
# End LILO global section
Don't forget to run LILO
after you change the config.
Good Luck.

Well, I did a little testing myself and it obviously has something
to do w/the CPU...
The problem box is a dell laptop with a mobile PII 233 so I
always compiled my kernels (2.2.1x) for M686.
Just to troubleshoot the problem here I compiled a 2.4.1
kernel with just
CONFIG_M386=y
CONFIG_X86_L1_CACHE_SHIFT=4
CONFIG_HOHIGHMEM=y
in the processor section.
And now it works (and yes, w/out initrd)
The problem could also be one of the other options (mtrr, ...)
but I'll check that tomorrow...

OK, this is interesting. I can ping from the NT box using either the
hostname or IP address. When I look at the logs on the linux machine, I
see nothing in the maillog when the NT machine attempts to read mail. I
also checked the 'secure' log, and nothing there either. When I check
mail from the linux box, I see an entry in both.
I think there is something simple blocking the NT box from reaching the
pop or telnet servers. Any ideas?

Date: Mon, 5 Feb 2001 09:43:07 -0800
Hi
I am looking for information about configuring my system for Xfree86 4+,
using multihead and xinerama. My system is as follows;
Suse v7
1x AGP Voodoo3 2000 16Mb
1x PCI Voodoo3 2000 16Mb
Using the Suse utility I can get X running with the primary card (the AGP)
fine. I can also set it up for the second card as well, but when I try to
start X, it initialises both cards but X never appears and I cannot
alt-Backsp out of it. A cold reboot is needed.
If anyone has some advice or a suitable config file I can try, I would
appreciate it.
Thanks very much

Hello,
try using another client, maybe you are using this outlook crap which may only work
with
M$-Bloatserver 3000, or what do I know, maybe you have to insert the NT CD and boot
a few time,
maybe your NT install is broken as you should be able to telnet to port 110 of your
mailserver...
Honestly the basic TCP/IP network things seem to work. And I would really sugest
asking another ng
to get some better help, as I wrote in my last post.
Good luck

--enable-module=rewrite --enable-module=status
on the second apache compile, make gives errors and make install cannot
be run as a result. the errors are fairly plain, the last few lines are:
make[3]: *** [all] Error 1
make[2]: *** [subdirs] Error 1
make[2]: Leaving directory '/usr/local/etc/apache_1.3.14/src'
make[1]: *** [build-std] Error 2
make[1]: Leaving directory '/usr/local/etc/apache_1.3.14'
make: *** [build] Error 2
ive pulled out countless handfulls of my hair trying to solve this, if
anyone has had this problem i would love to hear solutions.
thanks,
brad
