Subject: LILO problems
Date: Tue, 15 Aug 2000 07:03:06 -0700
HI,
Tried installing RH6.2.
Problem is it will not boot from ide0.
The system looks for the boot record , says ok then fills
the screen up with this
01010101010101010
01010101010101010
1010101010 etc.....................
I installed LILO in the MBR.
after installing, I get this message.
Warning: BIOS drive 0x82 may not be accessible.
I have partitions as follows.
/ 600megs
/boot 10 megs
/home (fills up rest of disc, about 1 gig)
So right now I can boot up the system from floppy, but cannot
access my windoze drive at all.
Thank you in advance

Yupp. It's still a bit experimental, but depending on the machine

No, there is no breakage. You can compile the user programs from a
post-3.1.11 PCMCIA package with a 2.4.0-test kernel, even though the
version numbers do not match. (For example), if you get the 3.1.19
PCMCIA package and build it, you'll get a version of cardmgr that says
it is version 3.1.11, since that's the version number in the kernel
header files. And it will work with the kernel PCMCIA support.
Just trust the Configure script. It knows what to do. If there was a
problem, it would say so.

There is not really any such thing as a canonical setup for an
experimental kernel release, especially with PCMCIA, since the PCMCIA
support in the 2.4 kernel tree is known to be broken in various ways.
That said, I haven't heard of APM suspend problems related to PCMCIA
in 2.4. Why do you think the kapmd failure is related to PCMCIA?

Most of them are PnP - so, unless it has jumpers, you have to set it up
with isapnp. See the PnP-HOWTO at:
http://metalab.unc.edu/pub/Linux/docs/HOWTO/Plug-and-Play-HOWTO
Then, you load the module for it, if I'm not mistaken, ne.o; then you
configure your network.

I am going to purchase a Second hardrive for Mandarke 7.1 so i can learn
Linux without screwing windows up. Does anyone know a page that tells how i
go about doing this? My understanding is that after installing second
hardrive i have to boot into windows to make sure it is set up, then restart
computer with 2nd drive to boot to install Mandrake on. Now, after the
Linux install (fingers crossed if it works) , will LILO ask what OS to boot
to cause of it being on another Hardrive? Or does Lilo work only if on a
partition linux/windows system? Could someone clear me up, or know a page
that will? :)
Thanks alot,

"Modem busy" can be an IRQ problem. Possibly, your modem IRQ has been
changed by Plug-and-Pray? You can use setserial in Lx to correct it; when you
fix it, put the line in /etc/rc.d/rc.local to run when you boot Linux.

Ok I am having an extremely similar problem, but no ISA is involved
whatsoever. I have an Intel SE440BX2 motherboard with an integrated Yamaha
DS-XG sound chip (PCI) that is running on IRQ 11. I am also using a 3Com
56K V.90 Controller-based modem also running on IRQ 11. I have no problems
in Windows, but in Linux apparently these two are not cooperating together
real well. When I have the ALSA sound drivers loaded I can not access my
modem at all, and when I am online I can not open my ALSA sound drivers.
I'm positive that it's got to do with both of them being on the same IRQ,
but I don't know how to change it. I have attempted going into the CMOS
and setting IRQ 11 as "reserved" only for both devices to attempt to occupy
IRQ 14. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Damn, forgot about that :)
quick and dirty way is to change it is to do a quick bit of perl:
#!/usr/bin/perl
$USER=shift(@ARGV);
$WORD=crypt($USER,$USER);
print $WORD;
So if you call that crypt.pl, then you'd do:
CRYPTWORD=`crypt.pl $USER`
useradd -g staff -p $CRYPTWORD $USER
Make sure the ticks are correct, the ones in the CRYPTWORD line
must be backticks ` not the ' under the "
And be a good little vegemite, and use full pathnames to all
files so $PATH don't leap up and bite you!

Okay first of all you really want to stay away from placing your LILO in
the MBR (ie..Master Boot Record ..IF your going to have a DUAL BOOT system
Win??/ Linux) if not then ignore.
IF you DO have a DUAL boot system win??/linux then I suggest using
LOADLIN.EXE as your Boot Strap.

Hi Jeff. We just got two of those i180 cheapbastards in here and had a
wrastling match with'em. I went the RH62 route, and experiencd all the
same problems you are (solved now though, after much pain)
Another guy had a Mandrake 7.1 CD... guess what... zero trouble. These
are (stupid/cheap/crap) Dell Optiplex GX110 boxes with the
i810/810e/AC'97).
Neither of us still have sound (crap AC'97), but we're working.
I feel yer pain bro... seriously. I had the exact same XFree 4
problems you did. I went and fetched all those glide libs too... only
to find out it was useless because the XFree86 -configure would end up
halting on a signal anyway later (grrrrrrrrrrrrr).
If you'd like my working XF4.0 XF86Config for the 810e, I'd be happy to
share it. Unfortunately, you also have to go through the runaround of a
kernel update (to get agpgart) before getting it to work though, you
can't just take my file and have it working. Also, it has been
mentioned before to avoid the Intel agpgart, and use the one in the
kernel update. I tried both, and had better luck with the 2.2.16-3
kernel.
Good luck. You're not alone man... i810 support from RH62 is really,
really (really!) poor... but it can be conquered, if you're up to it.

Well I thought that I had used isapnp correctly, and it seems to be
doing something good when Linux starts up as I get a whole bunch of "OK"
messages regarding the sound card. But Linux still doesn't init the
card. In order to get sound out of Linux I have to start Windows, leave
Windows, then start Linux. If I start Linux after a cold boot, the
sound doesn't work.
Are there any other suggestions, fixes, workarounds?
