Thanks Colin for your info, I've tried the solutions and it
worked. But when I tried to install the XFSetup's rpm, it
gives me error:
"failed dependencies: Xserver is needed by
XFee86-XF86Setup-3.3.6-20"
I've looked into all of the RPM in CDROM/RedHat/RPMS but fails
to find the file(Xserver). How can I solve this problem ?

Subject: scsi will not load
Date: Fri, 01 Sep 2000 08:20:34 GMT
Hi,
I can install Redhat 6.2 succesfully, but the system reboots and
cannot see any scsi hosts, and so kernel panics.
Symbios NCR8x SCSI controller PCI card:
0 disks
Adaptec 7800 SCSI controller on board:
0 disks
Netraid 3si SCSI RAID controller PCI card:
8 disks @ 18Gb configured:
0 disks on controller0
4 disks on controller1
(first two disks are RAID1)
4 disks on controller2
(second two disks on controller1 and all disks on controller2 are
RAID5)
During the install process the system correctly detects the Netraid
3si scsi controller and loads the megaraid driver. The disks are
visible to the install OS, and after partitoning /boot on sda1, / on
sda5, and swap on sda6, the OS formats the partitions and installs the
packages.
The system then reboots and gets as far as detecting the IDE CDROM.
Then it kernel panics because it has not loaded the megaraid scsi
module, and therefore it cannot see the root partition on sda5.
I have used a rescue disk to access the system, and gone into the
initrd file using losetup /dev/loop, and I saw that the megaraid.o
driver was under /lib/modules, and I even added insmod megaraid.o to
the linuxrc file.
The problem remains.
Does anyone have any ideas...?

You can get Findpart at http://inet.uni2.dk/~svolaf/utilities.htm,
boot do DOS or Windows, do
findpart all +fat fp.txt
and post the content from fp.txt in a follow-up to this message.
Depending on the situation I might be able to help you.

When I type 'make xconfig', I get a little bit of commentary, but it
ends when it gets to the following:
cat header.tk >> ./kconfig.tk
./tkparse < ../arch/i386/config.in >> kconfig.tk
It stops at this point, although it doesn't lock up. It just sits there
until I terminate it by pressing [ctrl]+[z].
If I try 'make menuconfig', it ends with:
Preparing scripts: functions, parsing........done.
I have also tried 'make config'. This got me through the configuration
process okay, but when I tried 'make dep', it ended with:
nothing to be done for 'dep'.
make[1]: leaving directory '/home/ala/linux/arch/i386/boot'
scripts/mkdep init/*.c > .depend
Any help would be much appreciated. I've just spent a lot of money on a
new Zip drive and I understand that it won't work on kernels older than
2.2.14 so it's very frustrating not being able to use it.

Your problem is not that serious even though it seems to be. I encountered
the same problem after an upgrade to 6.2 and I pulled my hair out trying
to find a solution. Change the kernel - upgrade the kernel to 2.2.16-3 and
make sure you go to RH errata section and upgrade the rpm installer to
the new rpm. Both the kernel and the installer have some bugs. This will
solve your problem and prevent some future problems. In the interim,
simply log on using your boot disk (you did make a boot disk?). I hope, I
know this will solve your problem.

With help from a Linux guru, the problem was solved:
a) Use FDISK to partition the 3GB partition, using 'linux native'
only, since the 'extended' is seen by Windoze.
b) After that, LILO would hang. Running FDISK again, I noticed that it
displays a warning that my HD has 1232 cylinders, but anything above
1024 might cause problems, for example (surprise!) to LILO.
c) So I assigned 128MB for the swap, and the rest up to cyl #1024 to /
and everything is cool now.
Downside - unused 1.5 BG on my 10GB disk.

Subject: Can't mount my Win98 drive
Date: Thu, 07 Sep 2000 11:09:12 GMT
I am a newbie, and I've installed Red Hat Linux on a Pentium II that has
dual hard drives. The boot drive has a single Win98 partition, and the
second drive has a Linux native partition and a Linux swap partition.
Using LILO, I can successfully boot either Linux or Win98, but I'm not able
to mount the Win98 drive in Linux.
I've already gotten a lot of help with this in alt.linux, but we've hit a
dead end and I was referred here in the hope of finding someone more
experienced/expert.
Here are the facts so far. This command:
mount -t vfat /dev/hda1 /win95
generates the mount version, followed by several lines of mount parameters,
followed by these error messages:
VFS: Can't find a valid MSDOS filesystem on dev 03:01.
mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/hda1, or too many
mounted filesystems
mount /dev/hda1 /win95
produces the same result, and an analogous line inserted in fstab also does
the same.
I have two questions about the VFS error message. Why does it complain
about no "valid MSDOS filesystem" rather than no "valid vfat (or FAT16 or
FAT32) filesystem"? Also, how and why does it convert /dev/hda1 to dev
03:01?
fdisk reports my boot drive as follows:
Disk /dev/hda: 64 heads, 63 sectors, 623 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 4032 * 512 bytes
Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/hda1 * 1 622 1253920+ b Win95 FAT32
So, there is only one partition on hda, it is the boot partition, and it is
a Win95 FAT32 type. And, I'm certain that it is a valid, uncorrupted
partition because I can boot into it and work on it.
fdisk reports my second drive this way:
Disk /dev/hdb: 64 heads, 63 sectors, 525 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 4032 * 512 bytes
Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/hdb1 1 460 927328+ 83 Linux native
/dev/hdb2 461 525 131040 5 Extended
/dev/hdb5 461 524 128992+ 82 Linux swap
And, as noted, there's no problem in mounting this drive (it mounts through
fstab entries along with my CD-ROM).
I have verified that /win95 and /dev/hda1 exist in my Linux setup because I
can cd to either directory.
The man mount pages document the various names that can be used for the
filesystem parameter and none of them is Win95 FAT32. However vfat is
listed and I assume that that is the correct "alias" for Win95 FAT32. The
man mount pages also refer to a listing of valid
filesystem names at linux/fs/filesystems.c, but that file does not exist on
my system.
find / -name filesystems.c -print or
find / -iname filesystems.c -print
produce no result. Furthermore, if I do:
find / -iname files*.*-print
I get 5 files in various sub-directories, but filesystems.c is NOT among
them.
Would the lack of filesystems.c cause the problems I've been having? It
doesn't seem to matter to the mounting of the Linux and CD-ROM drives that
get mounted by fstab.
Is it possible that I just have a bad install? I did not accept the default
packages list (long story as to why not) but supposedly RedHat would warn me
about required packages and install what was needed anyway if something was
missing. I got no such warnings!
I guess I could re-install, but it may not solve the problem and I'd like to
avoid the hassle. There is nothing critical on the system as it now exists,
it's just a playground for learning.
Thanks for the help,
Don
