What command are you using? To re-boot the machine, try
shutdown -r now
This should re-boot the machine to Linux.
I can't tell exactly, but it sounds as if you're using the halt
command:
shutdown -h now
If so, the OS is shutting down your machine completely, and your
monitor is complaining because the PC isn't sending it anything.

Date: Mon, 5 Feb 2001 10:46:55 -0500
i am trying to setup redhat linux 6.2 on a dual boot system which currently
is running windows on the first partition of size 33gb. in linux setup when
it comes time to partition i get an error complaining that the boot
partition size is too big, even with the minimum size of 1mb. i have
learned that the reason is because the boot partition must reside before the
1024 sector of the machine. my questions are, and keep in mind that this is
my first endeavor with linux:
1) how do i do this, and
2) will this affect windows on the first partition ?
i would like to avoid starting from scratch, i.e. re-installing windows,
because the computer is shared among several users, and information loss
would probably imminent. originally, there was a single partition running
windows. my steps up to this point were as follows:
a) defragment drive c: from windows
b) split the partition into 2 partitions using the fips utility
(existing one ~33gb running windows, and a new one ~5gb for linux)
c) in linux setup, delete the newly created partition
d) partition for linux
thanks in advance for any help.

What you want is to install Boot Manager, which comes with Partition
Magic, which is supplied with some Linux distributions. Boot Manager
gets a 1MB partition at the front of the disk and I think takes over the
Master Boot Record sector. It gives you a menu of installed operating
systems and lets you choose which one to boot; you can set it to default
to a particular OS after so many seconds. Works like a charm.
You might be able to get LILO or another tool to do this as well. The
concept is that you install a bit of a bootstrap within the first 1024
that chooses the OS, then points to that OS' main partition to do the
rest of the booting.

Yes, it's possible. Read the IP Masquerade HOWTO and follow those
instructions; I don't think Squid is designed to handle telnet and so
on, although it can allow ftp via browser.

Thank you for your help!

The disk(a drivers.img) written by the rawrite actually worked
as a driver disk.
When I checked if files were transfered in the disk,
Windows said, "There's no file. 1,457,664byte empty".
As for a pcmcia.img, I could see files in the disk.
So I believed nothing was there.
Thank you again!
But regrettably, the disk doesn' t contain the driver for
my card.(Corega Ether II PCC-T)
When I move to the next step to choose a medea,
only a Hard Drive is listed.
Red Hat Hardware detail information page says

Can I use this when installing a RH7 without unix system?

Did you install your ethernet adaptor prior to installing RH? If so, it
probably recognized your adaptor and you're good to go.
If not, there's an Ethernet HOWTO at
http://www.linuxdoc.org/HOWTO/Ethernet-HOWTO.html.

Your options are; resize and move your windows partition so that you can
create a small boot partition before it, boot linux from a floppy drive,
or use one of the Linux Loaders that is not limited by the 1024 sector
issue. (Choosing which one of those to use is almost as complicated and
involved as choosing which distribution you want to use.)

I have a Win2k box up and running. But when I did the latest install, I
installed as NTFS as opposed to FAT32. Last night I did an install of Man.
7.2. The bootloader (grub?) did not give an option for booting to windows
as it had in the past. So now I cannot boot into Win2k (I still need it).
Is there a way I can edit grub to at Win2k NTFS support? Is there a similar
command for Win2k such as fdisk /mbr to clean this up if I cannot get
Mandrake working? I have read the grub mini how-to and performed searches
on dejanews, but nothing seems to address this particular situation.

Subject: loadlin and initrd failing
Date: Mon, 05 Feb 2001 16:47:09 GMT
Hi everybody!
I have som real troubles to create an automatic setup for a compaq
Deskpro System ...
This PC has a small partition which it boots Win98 (only DOS, no
graphics mode). From that it should fire up Linux with loadlin using a
RAM disk as root fs, that one should get initialized through an initrd
file.
Sounds pretty straight forward, but does not work. Reason: when I fire
up loadlin using:
loadlin vmlinuz root=/dev/ram initrd=initrd
loadlin loads the kernel and initrd and then it starts up the kernel to
fail with:
Kernel panic: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on 01:00
My initrd contains a minix file system stuffed with a lot of programs,
but obviously, it doesnt go as far as mounting it. the Kernel has minix
as file system directly compiled in, and RAM Disk Support is also
enabled (not as module, either).
Im really desperate.
Has anybody any idea about that?

Date: Mon, 05 Feb 2001 17:14:45 GMT
Hello,
I've got a Redhat 6.2 system running the 2.2.14 kernel without problem.
I just installed the 2.4.1 kernel, and now, when I try to start X with
the gdm, the screen flickers a few times and then says that gdm was
"mysteriously murdered". Is there any way around this? Everything else
seems to work w/ the new kernel, just gdm is giving me trouble. When I
boot the 2.2.14 kernel gdm still works so it's not a crisis, but I'd
like to get it cleared up as soon as possible.
System info:
