No, I'm trying to set up different linux configurations for different needs.

sdb1 has a full install of debian.
sdb4 is an exact duplicate of sdb1.
sdb5 I want to set up for a minimal boot. contains copies of the following
directories from sdb1:
    /bin /dev /etc /mnt /sbin
    except:
/bin only contains sh, a copy of bash.
/dev only contains console, fd?, initctl, sda*, sdb*, tty?
    /etc only contains inittab
    /sbin was copied in full
    /usr /var /tmp /home were entirely discarded.
When I say "minimal boot," I mean just enough to get sulogin up. In fact, my
inittab file is as follows:
    si::sysinit:/sbin/sulogin

That's it. However, somehow, one or more of the files I threw out were needed
by the kernel, because the kernel panics when it tries to find init.

I am trying to get Linux Mandrake 7.0 running on an old 486. I get
problems with the math emulation.

I have been advised to compile myself a kernel. I allready have Linux
running on a Pentium machine. I was advised to compile it on the pentium
and copy it across onto the 486.

I am worried about starting this process and overwriting my kernel that
is allready present on the pentium.

Can anyone advise on this procedure.

So I had LM 7.0 running a while back and reformatted HDs etc. Got the
ISO's for 7.1 and installed it on a fresh dual boot system with W98.
This is the same setup I had before with 7.0

Now, I'm using a cable modem, my NIC is a ISA 3com 3c509B, my isp is
@home. If I recall correctly, under 7.0 I was actually able to leave it
in PnP mode, and use pnpdump/isapnp to configure it in linux...easily.
Now, for whatever reason, this doesn;t work on the new install. Has
something changed in 7.1 that I'm just not aware of, or am I doing
something wrong?

In W98, the 3c509b gets config'd to 0x210 IRQ 5 in PnP. I go into Linux,
where eth0 can't be pulled up on boot (of course). From the konsole, I
run "pnpdump >intel.conf". The intel.conf file contains info for the
3com (it IS found). I change the IRQ to 5 in this file and make sure the
address line, irq line and act y line are uncommented. Then I run isapnp
intel.conf and get the error of something like "Can't probe blah blah
while device is already running" I do a lsmod...no evidence 3c509 (or
any other NIC module that I know of) is a running module. I
then specifically went into network config portion of drakconf and
unckecked the adapter1 "enabled" button to prevent any kernel modeule
from being loaded. Still a problem. I've read the HOW-TO on ethernet,
and I know it says you HAVE to turn PnP off, but I'm sure I was able to
get it to work under 7.0 with PnP on. I'm FRUSTRATED!

I've also heard of new issues with DHCP correctly setting up the hostname
etc. in 7.1 as compared to 7.0? Any tips for @home users (other that the
-h flag) SUppose I'll worry about this after I get the darn machine to
recognize the NIC!

Any help is appreciated.

Not that I'm a Linus whiz, but ...

General advice is to get a couple of hard disk carriers so that you put
the HD for the OS you want to use into the PC before switching on. It's
probably easier than setting up dual boot etc.

There *shouldn't* be a problem with the FAT 32 disk - the RH
installation should offer to partition it before the installation starts
properly.

When you compile a kernal, the first step is to untar it,
then you will need to do a make config or make menuconfig. Make config is a
text-only menu, menuconfig is a pretty nice menu system for selecting what
you will need supported in your kernel. I would suggest you use the make
menuconfig. After that is down, open up the file 'Makefile' in your editor
of choice and find the line:

#INSTALL_PATH=/boot

the '#' denotes that this line is commented out. Take out the '#' and change
the path '/boot' to a location in your home directory. Something like
'/home/username/486kernel'. If you do this, make sure that you actually
created the directory '486kernel' prior to running the 'make dep'.

Here is a nice little walk through to compiling the kernel:

If you need more help, see the howto on the kernel at:

Sounds good. Perhaps you could clear up what swap space is??? Does
that use ext2 also? I am a little confused how Linux uses it's hard
drives. In windows you just switch to the drive you want and you can
save information to it. In linux how do I telling it to save all the
info in the home directory to the 8 GB hard drive? Don't forget you
are dealing with a real linux novice here. Can hda1 be larger than 2
GB?

Do I have to make a seperate partion for each directory??? Is there a
way for me to say save /usr /home and /var to hdb1? Are there system
files in any of these directories? Cause what I was hoping to do is
save all the user files that will become quite sizable to one drive
and save hda1 for the Linux OS so that when I want to
replace/change/upgrade it has no effect to the user data.

How large is send mail going to get? Are the attachments saved with
the messages?

I don't think compiling the kernel is needed to install the NIC, but
rather enable the IP Masquerading. Or so I think. That's what I have
read up until this point. However I am always open for suggestion.

I had almost exactly the same problem, but with a Duron 600 chip.
However, using the boot disk I made during installation resulted in the
same error message. Someone else suggested (in a separate thread) that
using the _installation_ boot disk in rescue mode would work. That is, at the
"boot: " prompt, type:

        rescue root=/dev/hda3

(with "3" replaced by the number of the partition you have mounted as /.
At least, I think I have that right.)
I haven't tried that yet, but it sounds hopeful. Unfortunately, I gave
up (temporarily) and reinstalled w98, so I need to redo the whole
install (sigh...) not to mention getting the new kernel!

Anyone have any better ideas?

No docs necessary. Just do the following:

1/ Download bootnet.img
2/ use rawrite to write bootnet.img on disk (or 'dd if=bootnet.img
of=/dev/fd0')
3/ Reboot with disk
4/ Follow instructions.

That's it. If you're not sure, I recommend to try this first with a
temp-pc (a pc that can be formatted, shaken and stirred without social
consequences).

I have followed the extensive Travelmate 400 installation with my Linux

Now when it boots up it cannot see the SCSI CDROM. It reports, on boot,

I have tried putting the aha152x=0x340,11,7,0 on the LiLo prompt line,
but it always reports the resource as busy.

Any one help?

My laptop installation of 7.0 did the same thing. I had to use the

I've got the same experience with nvidia (except for the fs loss). Always
I try their drivers, my computer freezes completly - something I'm not
