Consider buying more memory and HDD. I'm serious. The limit for RAM
is 40MB with your model, and HDD are at least supported up to 6GB, but
under Linux I would think that it least 8GB should work, possibly up
to 32GB.

I seriously doubt you will have fun doing so.

I did an FTP-install (NFS didn't work) of SuSE 6.0 two years ago, see
http://www.informatik.uni-freiburg.de/~utcke/Laptop/linux701.html
for more info. The information is seriously dated and incomplete, but
might be a starting point.

Yes. I still use it as my main workhorse at home (my wife is running
Windows on an AMD KII 400MHz). But even with 40MB of RAM and a
reasonable HDD this machine is pretty much maxed out just running X
with fvwm, Emacs and Netscape 3.04.

Indeed.

Well, it does start and sort of crawls along, but is not anywhere near
useable.

As I said, I went back to 3.04, and for a reason...

For me, the RealPlayer does about one frame every 10 seconds. Not
much fun...

No. You have to have room for your RAM, the graphics Video and some
overhead, approx 42MB. Leaving 50MB would be plenty. The Thinkpad is
able to create the hibernation file on an empty FAT16 partition, no
additional tools needed (as opposed to many other Thinkpads).

Indeed. Getting it on 500MB and actually have some space left for
swapping, hibernation and work is damn near impossible. And you can
not have the hibernation file double as swap either, of course...

Not at all. The BIOS of the TP701 is so good that you would hardly
miss APM, at least in my experience. All I need to remember is to
start a small script after wakeup which restores ports, PCMCIA, Sound
and the clock...

I use it exclusively in X (unless you count Emacs under X as textmode
:-) and that's fine too. But remember: it is old, and not well suited
to fancy GUI stuff...

No, the first disk contains Win98 and, according to fdisk, is formatted as
FAT32. I've never used and have no access to WinNT so I don't think that
there's any way that it could be an NTFS filesystem.

I have a linux(suse) server and a unix(irix) server running on a network.
Recently the linux server keeps giving warning message "YPDomain not
found". And finally the unix server got hang up as well.

I can still telnet, ftp and even access exported path from my ypclient
server(the Suse one). I have checked that the "ypserv" is running on yp
master server(the Irix one) and the "ypbind" is running on
ypslave/ypclient
server(the Suse one). However, I also found that the there is missing an
entry for ypclient in file /var/ns/domains/my_ypmaster/ypservers. Would it
be the cause?

It is so strange that I can access exported paths and even login as user
of ypmaster server on ypclient server(Suse one).

Thks!

This is a mistake, fdisk does NOT tell you how a partition is formatted,
it can only tell you a partition ID. It could just as well be entirely
unformatted what fdisk concerns.

But if it's supposed to be a FAT FS, try to find out if the vfat module
is correct. Try to mount a floppy with a FAT FS on it (either format in
linux with "mkdosfs /dev/fd0" or format a floppy in windows) try if you
can mount that. mount command is: mount -t vfat /dev/fd0 /mnt/floppy

If this fails too, try to recompile the module (or the kernel if
needed).

Or get Linux 2.4.0 which already comes with the latest
IDE/Promise drivers built-in. Bear in mind that 2.4.x are
test kernels and up to test8pre6 had a bug in the ext2
filesystem which can cause filesystem corruption.

With 2.4.0 I have transfer rates of 36 MB/s with an
IBM-DTLA 307030 on the ATA-100 channel.

Lilo usually requires /boot to be on the 1st 1024 cylinders. Your sda5
probably lies outside this range. I am not sure, but repartitioning your
sd probably helps, with / to be on sda1, and sda1 to be within the 1st
1024 cylinders.

My /boot partition on sda1 is only 128 Mb, so the 1024 cylinder limit

Okay, I can't seem to get this tablet to work properly. I have the
kernel drivers (with 2.4.0-test4), I got xf86GraphireUSB.c which is
supposed to work with XFree86 4.0.1 and it even compiled, and I set
XF86Config to use the wacom driver to make cursor, stylus, and eraser
input devices that read from /dev/input/event0. From what I have found
on the internet, this should make everything work. However, the X server
crashes on start up. At the end of the log file I find that the Wacom
module complains of Unknown error 1013.

Right now I am using the tablet as an emulated PS/2 mouse on
/dev/input/mouse0, but I want it to work fully.

Hi Everyone,

I am having this problem and I need help from Linux gurus ASAP.
Currently I am running Redhat Linux version 6.1. This linux is
functioning as a gateway (i.e. IP chains, IP masquarade) with 3
NICs (2 Internal networks and 1 external). The 2 internal
networks has the following IP network address: 172.16.1.0/24
and 192.168.1.0/24. The external interface has an IP address
of 199.0.216.222. Everything is working at this point with linux
kernel 2.2.16-3.

I download the new linux kernel 2.2.17 and recompile the kernel
with the same instructions I use when I upgrade the kernel from
2.2-12 to 2.2.16-3. After I recompile the new kernel 2.2.17,
my external interface no longer works..... The internal interface
is working properly but not the interface. The NICs that I am
using is 3com905-XL model. Please help...

Thanks....

If you attach the second HD as slave on your primary IODE controller,
Linux will see it as /dev/hdb, whereas your primary master (where I
assume W98 lives) will be /dev/hda; no danger to ovberwrite anything
unless you make a typo.

Most distributions use LILO to provide multiboot.

????? Who told you that - it's false. Linux uses its own partition type,
called (for now) Ext2. There are other partition types which Linux can
be installed onto, but I won't go into this here. The installer will
"format" the partition for you - the Linux equivalent of DOS "format" is
mke2fs -, and, usually, even partition the disk for you, depending on
your distribution (I'm not familiar with the RH installer). All you have
to make sure is there's enough free, unpartitioned, space on the HD.

I am getting a 3 meg service thru DSL for my hospital. I have a 233 mhz
pentium with 300 meg of memory and 9 gig scsi drive that I want to use
for a linux server. I know this server is more than enough to handle
the number of users I will have for the internet. I have several
questions. The network is setup as such. I didn't really plan for
internet service when I setup up internal network. I am using a super
mask of 255.255.248.0, which I know shouldn't be a problem, but I am
using a network that goes from 180.248.248 to 180.248.255 for my users.
I do not own these addresses for the internet. I want to use
IPchains with redhat 6.2 server. I know this is possible. My question
is 2 fold. Do I have to change my network addressing to 192.168.0 thru
192.168.whatever? The ISP is giving me 5 legitimate IP addresses for
the internet. The DSL will be coming directly into my linux server then

I will have another ethernet card that will interface with my internal
network so the packets shouldn't reach the internet. Is my assumption
right? That is part one of my questions. My next question is I want to

use the same box to setup internet email for my users. Since the ISP is

giving me 5 static addresses to work with, how would the best way to use

this one box for masquarading and internet email. I want to use
sendmail. Is this a good enough email for this. I want to setup pop3
and smtp service on this server. The ISP will handle the DNS part for
me. I have a registered domain name. All suggestions will be
appreciated.

Here's your problem - you unpacked the kernel sources in your home
directory. Don't tell me you're also compiling as a normal user! The
scripts expect the kernel tree to be found in /usr/src/linux, and the
user to be logged in as root for the compile. Read the Kernel-HOWTO
(http://metalab.unc.edu/pub/Linux/docs/HOWTO/Kernel-HOWTO)

Also, I would recommend that you use menuconfig over xconfig. Haven't
checked lately, but I remember xconfig was somewhat buggy a while ago.

Oh yeah, I just realized, you said that you didn't make a default
install.
You did not by any chance leave out support for msdos or fat, did you?
If you only have the vfat module, you will not be able to mount a fat
FS, because this uses the fat.o module, which in turn uses the msdos.o
module.
you'll need at least msdos.o to mount the FAT32 FS, but if you want more
functionality (long filenames eg.) you should get fat.o and vfat.o
I'm not sure what is exactly where in these modules.

you could create a symbolic link from index.html to index.shtml.

I know this would not be the "proper" way to do it (I don't have much apache
experience, sorry) but I can't think of a reason it would not work (so long
as followsymlinks is enabled).

Used the boot disk (floppy) to boot in my RH 6.0 laptop and was told cannot

Must I transfer the Base and RPM files in other for the boot to find the
hard disk?
Thanks.

OK then... Let's be fair:

I've used .92, .93, and .94 on my TNT2. Within seconds of starting most
3D apps, my computer has completely locked up on me. Couldn't even ping
it. Forced a hard reboot. Spent 30 minutes fsck my hard disk. Once, my
home directory was so screwed I had to restore everything from tape. Now,
perhaps nVidia isn't responsible for the fact that my home partition was
screwed up, but their drivers *did* cause the lock up that led to hitting
the power switch.

Let's continue to be fair:

I sent a couple messages to the e-mail address nVidia supplied, describing
the situation. I never got a response. Not *one* response to that
problem. So, I visit the irc channel for them. Although there were
plenty of nice people there, *none* of them were helpful.

So, in the grand tradition of being fair, nVidia blows me off as customer
so I blow them of as a manufacturer. They've lost a customer. And until
they change their attitude, I will *not* be coming back.
