The 1024-cyl limit is another issue; but you _can_ use LILO from the hda
MBR to boot a kernel from a physically different drive. In fact, I'm
doing it right now, my kernel (and root partition, since I use
Slackware, and in Slack the kernel is on /, not /boot) is on /dev/hdb3,
below the 1024 cyl limit though. I boot it from the MBR of the master
primary. It's all in the man page of lilo.conf:

boot = /dev/hda #it's the MBR of the master primary where lilo will be
#installed; if omitted, the MBR of the device where the
#current root partition is will be used
.
.
.
image = /vmlinuz
root = /dev/hdb3 #what will be mounted as root
.
.

Subject: [ADVANCED] force dns lookup
Date: Fri, 8 Sep 2000 14:24:03 -0400

hello everyone,
i can't find any information on how to force an authorative
lookup of a given dns name...

the problem i have is: a dial up connection which registers
with dhs.org each time it connects so

<myname>.dyn.dhs.org

always points to the (if connected) ip address of the dial up
connection

here's the scenario that causes me problems:

- dial up connects (gets some IP)
- client makes connection to client via <myname>.dyn.dhs.org
- client closes connection
- dial up hangs up
(shortly later)
- dial up connects again (gets a different IP)
- client wants to make another connection to <myname>.dyn.dhs.org

which now fails because the client still has the old dns entry
in the cache, or if it doesn't, the dns server it asks (which is not
the dhs.org nameserver) has a cached version (the first, out of date
ip address)

right now, i solve the problem by using

nslookup <myname>.dyn.dhs.org ns1.dhs.org

and then connect again using the ip address rather than
the dns name

any suggestions on how to resolve this problem? any kernel
patches that allow specific dns servers for specific dns names
(ie: use 209.249.164.210 (ns1.dhs.org) for all dyn.dhs.org
requests and <mynameserver> for all others)

thanks for all your help,
juergen pabel

I had the same problem this a.m. - I changed the screen resolution from
800x600 to 1024x768 and now it's OK. The fix took two minutes and was
provided by Eric Carlson (Thanks Eric) in this newsgroup on August 28.
Here's what he wrote:

As far as I know, you can't change the graphics extensively from X, you
can only fine-tune them. To redo a misconfigured X configuration, get
out of X (hit ctrl-alt-F1 and log in) and run Xconfigurator. This will
take you through the process you went through during install of choosing
the monitor and card, etc. When it gets to "start x when computer
boots" say NO! It's slightly more inconvenient to start x manually, but
if your X gets messed up, it's a pain to recover when you can't boot to
text. Anyway, when you get a config that looks good when Xconfigurator
tests it, press alt-F7 to go back to X, and press ctrl-alt-bksp to
restart x, hopefully it should look better than before. BTW, if you
take my advice about booting to text, when you start your computer
you'll log in as root, then type "init 5;exit". This switches to the
5th run level (graphics) and logs root out of that text login when the
switch is complete.

I recently installed Mandrake 7.0 on my Intel 233 MMX
computer. I've been told that RedHat rp3 is a better
choice than Kppp for my particular modem connection
situation. When I try to download rp3 from RedHat or
other sources, all I get is an image on the screen
that I think depicts the rp3 GUI. I was expecting a
file or package. What am I doing wrong?

Can anyone recommend a good image capturing program that'll do the trick

Today 'BOOT DISK FAILURE' when booting on IDE primary master; pulled off
caddy with IDE primary slave, now IDE primary master boots. IDE primary
master is pure windows, IDE primary slave is pure linux. I use BIOS to
choose OS of the day. Good thing I didn't put LILO on /dev/hda, as both
disks would need to be present for any booting. As far as Linux on /hdb,
perhaps it needs to be rammed into its slot firmer again... for the
meantime I'm glad that I got at least one OS to still work.

I'm having trouble setting up lynx 3.8.3-1 on my IBM ThinkPad A20m,

"update-menus: error in loading shared libraries:

Any ideas or suggestions? As you might guess, I'm a newbie. This is my

Don't patch your kernel, solve the problem at its root: Tell your DNS
admin to adjust TTL and refresh intervals.

When an authoritative name server gives out any information, it
includes some data on how long this information will stay valid. You
can change this by changing the SOA record in your zone files.

The refresh rate is meant for a secondary DNS server (which you may or
may not have); the TTL is meant for other name servers. If you know
that the DNS information for a given host will be very short lived, it
is reasonable to reduce these values. You may also want to decrease
retry (how long does a secondary wait before retrying a failed
request?) and expiry times (when must a secondary delete its
information if the primary still fails?).

A sample SOA record with extremely low values (certainly not
recommended for everyday use, but it sounds like you might need it)
could look like this:

n.n.n.in-addr.arpa.
        IN SOA dyn.dhs.org. postmaster.dhs.org. (
                                2000090821 ; serial
                                900 ; refresh: 15 minutes
                                600 ; retry: 10 minutes
                                3600 ; expiry: 60 minutes
                                900 ) ; TTL: 15 minutes

On mine I chose a higher vertical rate and it then defaulted to a higher

Oh, my monitor isn't in the list so I chose custom.

It's very difficult to compare as I can only use one at once, but the

Can anyone offer a reason for the differences?
