hi all,

My pc runs Redhat6.0 and Win98. It has no plug and play sound card, but
a Sound Max Integrated Digital Audio contraller by Anolog Devices Inc,
which is built onto the mother board. The sound is brilliant on win98.
However, under Redhat6.0, the controller can not be detected by
`sndconfig', and also it's not on the card list; so I have to edit the
file /etc/conf.modules myself. I am not sure how to change the file.
Suggestions?

Subject: RH 6.2 amd Toshiba Notebook

Hi;

I have a toshiba 730CDT with NT 4 on the first partition (NTFS) and
linux should go to the rest. I got the latest pcmcia.img
and a fresh copy of RH 6.2. The install wents ok up to some point.

I got to failures depending the the bootdisk i used (older or newer
one).

1) no boot options appear at all. the lilo and boot floppy part never
shoes up and the install stalls at
the end of package install (config of local setup). The shell is
accessable but the installer is dead.

2) i get the bootoptions screen - ohh yeahh - but the install fails
later at the same point.

The strange thing is i got this notebook runing with RH 6.2 but used
some old version of the pcmcia.img and perhaps
a strange path through the installer. I tried it this time too but
normal, text and expert lead to the same result.
Any idea what to do next - beside to get rid of the shity notebook ?

What happens if you type startx? If you get x, it's installed. Then do
an init 5.

Your particular problem, I don't know. It might help if you told

'Cause it works, *for*you*. Mine still brings down my entire system

If they know that /usr/lib/libGL.so can be wrong, why dont they check
it. If /usr/lib/libGL.a poses a problem, why dont they list it. They
have created rpms for redhat 7.0 beta where these files are installed
together with Mesa. They really would have noticed if these files
where present (crash etc.).

The size of the filesystem doesn't matter, the contents does (backup,
I know, I will). I very much see the point in having a seperate
partition for /home, but how can I know that this partition wont be
trashed just like / got trashed? It's the same kernel writing to both
partitions.

I downloaded the redhat 7.0 beta (6.9) to upgrade my
linux 6.2. But after the upgrade, the X window can not
run any more. I also notice the problem with rpm, the
package.rpm in /var/lib/rpm is gone. I cann't query a
package any more.

I am very grateful for people pointing out the right
way to upgrade to 7.0, or backing off to restore the 6.2!

Subject: Lost binary compatability in RedHat 7.0 (beta)
From: Bernhard Mogens Ege <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Date: Fri, 08 Sep 2000 14:49:30 GMT

History first:

I had RedHat 6.0 installed, and upgraded during the way to RedHat 7.0
beta. during that time, matlab-5.3 was working fine. Then I had a
filesystem crash and reinstalled RedHat 7.0 beta and now matlab will
not start anymore.

This is what happend when starting matlab:

/coll/local/bin/matlab: /pack/matlab-5.3/bin/lnx86/matlab: No such file or directory
/coll/local/bin/matlab: /pack/matlab-5.3/bin/lnx86/matlab: No such file or directory

file /pack/matlab-5.3/bin/lnx86/matlab says:

/pack/matlab-5.3/bin/lnx86/matlab: ELF 32-bit LSB executable, Intel 80386, version 1,
dynamically linked (uses shared libs), stripped

ldd /pack/matlab-5.3/bin/lnx86/matlab says:

/usr/bin/ldd: /pack/matlab-5.3/bin/lnx86/matlab: No such file or directory

ldd is usually able to show the libraries an executable depends on.

I believe binary compatability is lost tha in RedHat 6.2 were
installed with:
compat-binutils-5.2-2.9.1.0.23.1.i386.rpm
compat-egcs-5.2-1.0.3a.1.i386.rpm
compat-egcs-c++-5.2-1.0.3a.1.i386.rpm
compat-egcs-g77-5.2-1.0.3a.1.i386.rpm
compat-egcs-objc-5.2-1.0.3a.1.i386.rpm
compat-glibc-5.2-2.0.7.2.i386.rpm
compat-libs-5.2-2.i386.rpm

The packages cannot be installed as newer packages already are
installed. Now what do I do to get matlab running again?

Bernhard Ege

I'm not sure about supermount, but I believe that USB support is considered
experimental in the 2.2.* series of kernels. You may have to go to the menu
for turning on experimental devices and see if you can find your USB support
as on option there, as well as maybe supermount.

We've got a machine that has SuSE 6.3 on it. We have another with
Mandrake 7.0 on it. I'm much more familiar with the Mandrake way of
doing things so would like both machines to be Mandrake.

What are the chances of installing Mandrake over the top of SuSE
without losing any vital information? Has anyone done this before? Is
it straightforward? Anything I should watch out for?

The problem when installing Mandrake over SuSE is that the paths the
distributions are using for their libraries, configuration files and so on
are sometimes different. The content and structure of the configuration
files is different, too. I wouldnt recommend installing Mandrake over
SuSE - you will get in trouble.

When using SuSE Linux (perhaps also on RH 6.0) you could try the following:
isapnpdump -c > /etc/isapnp.conf
This will create a configuration file that doesnt has to be edited. On next
bootup your cable modem COULD work, but also not.

Subject: ipso facto network install
Date: Fri, 08 Sep 2000 16:51:01 GMT

Normally my Mandrake installation installs the network also. In this
instance it did not. I have everything else tuned the way I want it
but my Netscape cannot find localhost and ping does not find
127.0.0.1. How do I install networking after the installation is
complete?
