You don't need to add the .rpm to the end
rpm -e package
not
rpm -e package.rpm
Hope this helps

The HPT is a separate IDE interface on the PCI bus. You should have a normal
IDE interface as well and that is what is being detected. The HPT370 is a
ATA100 spec and linux has support. check on www.linux-ide.org for the
info. The 2.2 series currently don't have support, but there is a set of patches
hat can be added, but this means a re-compile.

RTFM :) It is located on www.linux.org under documents and look for
CD-Writing HOW TOs.
After getting the background information here is how I did it.
$ su -
password: <scret>
# cp /etc/conf.modules /etc/conf.modules.bak
# vi /etc/conf.modules
Modify conf.modules for your CDROM writer, my CDROM is located at /dev/hdc
Here is my conf.modules
alias scd0 sr_mod
alias scsi_hostadapter ide-scsi
options ide-cd ignore=hdc
# cp /etc/rc.d/rc.local /etc/rc.d/rc.local.bak
# vi /etc/rc.d/rc.local
Put this at the end of the rc.local
# load ide-scsi module
insmod ide-scsi
# cp /etc/lilo.conf /etc/lilo.conf.bak
# vi /etc/lilo.conf
put the append statement for /etc/lilo.conf your cdrom
'append="hdX=ide-scsi"' and run lilo.
Here is /etc/lilo.conf, my CDROM is located at /dev/hdc
boot=/dev/fd0
timeout=100
message=/boot/message
prompt
image=/boot/vmlinuz-2.2.14-6.1.1
label=linux
root=/dev/hda4
append="hdc=ide-scsi"
read-only
# /sbin/lilo
Now relink the /dev/cdrom to your scsi emulation of your cdwriter
# mv /dev/cdrom /dev/cdrom.bak
# ln -s /dev/scd0 /dev/cdrom
Reboot. (I don't know how to restart with new conf.modules and rc.local
in linux :( )
Run dmesg to see if your scsi emulation is working after the reboot
# dmesg

Run cdrecord to see if you scsi emulation is working also.

If cdrecord works, you can get gui front end like xcdroast to do the
burning.

This only gets created on the users desktop if your /etc/fstab has the user
flag for the cdrom, frex:
/dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom iso9660 ro,noauto,user 0 0
Then choose, I think, rescan devices on the desktop menu (right click, I
believe).

You can do some adjustment (size and position, but not pincushion) by using
xvidtune. The easiest way to use this is to install XF86Setup from the
first RH CD:
mount /mnt/cdrom
cd /mnt/cdrom/RedHat/RPMS
rpm --Uhv *VGA16* *Setup*
You can run XF86Setup from a gnome-terminal. Click on "done" (since you
only need to "refine" the configuration) and it will let you run xvidtune
and adjust the display. It will add those changes to the config file when
you're done.
You can run xvidtune by itself, but you have to add the results to your
XF86Config by hand. The above method does it for you.

Use bzImage instead of zImage when compiling and you will get a smaller

Hi,
I am getting a new PC with a 40 gig HDD. I am planning to install
linux (redhat 7beta) and win2k on it. I would like to know the
best way I should go about doing this. I am aware that there is a
1024 cylinder limit associated with LILO. So I would appreciate it
very much if someone could tell me how to partition my disk
(suppposing I give 20GB each to windows and linux). Also should I
first install win2k or Linux? And, do I use LILO or some
bootmanager of windows? (I haven't used win2k before and am a
complete newbie there).
The configuration includes: Motherboard - Intel CA810E,
Hard Drive - Maxtor 40 GB EIDE Ultra DMA/66 Model # MXT-94098U8

Manoj.

OOPS That line should have been:
Use 'make bzImage' instead of 'make zImage' when compiling and you will get
a smaller kernel image :-)

This is not a complete answer, but go to this URL:
http://www.enteract.com/~lspitz/linux.html
It has a description of Linux security modifications and the
section
"eliminating services" addresses your question.

With regard to your 6326 video card, these are a known source of trouble in
Linux, go to the suse web site and do a search in their database on 6326,
lots of info there.

1. Linux is installed on /dev/hda(with lilo on the MBR) and has
been booted up fine. (with IDE-0 as the first boot device)
2. Win98 is installed on /dev/hdd and has been booted up fine.
(with IDE-1 as the first boot device by setting it up in BIOS. It is
physically on the secondary IDE slave)
3. The lines have been added to lilo
other=/dev/hdd
label=win98
loader=/boot/chain.b
table=/dev/hdd
When I ran /sbin/lilo, I got a warning of BIOS may not recognize device
0x82.
When I boot up with lilo(booting up from IDE-0), and choose win98,
I got the 0x01 error and the system doesn't move further.
I have disabled internal cache and DRAM wait burst which may cause
this problem. Any suggestion?
