Well, on my RH 6.1 system, _dl_symbol_value is defined in
/lib/libc.so.6, which is a symbolic link to /lib/libc-2.1.2.so,
which is owned by the RPM for glibc-2.1.2-11.

So I would suspect that libjava.so is OK, but libc.so.6 is goofed.
Which does seem unlikely, since lots of things use libc.so..
But I would suggest checking libc.so.6 first. Try doing
"nm /lib/libc.so.6". Is _dl_symbol_value defined in that library?
What RPM owns libc.so.6 on your system? (Find out by
"rpm -qf /lib/libc.so.6".) If RH 6.2 was recently installed,
probably things haven't been screwed up yet, but I don't know
what else to look at.

Hope this helps,
Robert Dodier

It's a bug in Netscape when run under 24 bit color.

I just installed Mandrake 7.0 on a celeron 333 with 128 mb of ram but
linux says that my total ram is 65 mbs. Windows detects 128.
In lothar under memory it says:
TOTAL: 64
USED: 49
FREE: 0
SHARED: 36
BUFFERS: 0
CASHED: 12
I also found it weird that I never have more than about 3 megs free,
even when I have nothing running.
thanks in advance for any help

*** Basically, yes I could do with some help. I don't have access to a Linux
box (work
not up to it yet) and all I have is the rescue disk/root disk from the
debian 2.2 dist. If you
could make a root disk for me that has the patch compiled into it then I
should be able to
take it from there. I can then d/l the latest kernel source and the patch
source, and make
myself a new kernel and a new -never-to-be-formatted- rescue and root disk
set.

Thanks!!!!

Date: Sat, 09 Sep 2000 08:17:27 GMT

My problem is that I sometimes type in English and sometimes in Swedish,
so I need both keyboard layouts. In other OS (MacOS or Windows) it's
very easy to switch keyboard layout using an indicator, which can be
switched on in the control panels. Is there anything similar in Linux
(Gnome or KDE).

The only way I've found to switch keyboard so far is to use the setup
command, but even then it doesn't seem to affect X.

(There must be a solution to this. It's a problem for everyone using
azerty / qwerty keyboards or all the other European layouts.)

I have a sample XF86Config file available on my WWW site - it is a very
stripped down version of the standard XF86Config that comes with the X
windows distribution - it might not work for you but it might help you
understand how the file is put together. I have a Trident 3DImage 975 AGP
card and this file works just fine with it - another guy I recently sent it
too used it "as is" on his SiS card (chipset?) with alterations in the
screen frequencies and card ID section and it worked for him.

Regarding Red Hat 6.2...

The docs say that the Server installation option will destroy everything
in ALL partitions. The Workstation option only destroys Linux partition
contents.

My question is this: will the Custom install option (install Everything)
wipe out whatever is in my Win98 partition, as the Server installation
would do?

Thanks.

X doesn't care about those variables. They're being set by
the shell that's started by your xterm. The problem is that
by default, an xterm doesn't start its shell as a 'login
shell', so it doesn't source your
.bash_profile/.profile/.login, so the variables are being
set to some default instead of your preferences.

To fix this, start your xterm with the '-ls' option, to
start it with a login shell. Alternatively, set the
xterm*loginShell resource to 'true' in your .Xdefaults.

Other terminals like Eterm will probably have something
similiar; check the man pages for 'login shell'.

Sorry if this posts twice. I don't see my original post.
=========================================================
I've really hosed things up this time. I'm currently running RedHat 6.1.
Originally I was trying to to install vim and ended up trying to upgrade
rpm. There were "conflicts" but I wanted vim so I used the --force for
the rpm-rpm upgrade. Was getting error messages about rpm and packages
>3...

After rebooting, the step that starts the xfs server fails. I get a
login prompt and appears to let me login but get the following error and
then the login prompt again.

"login: no shell! permission"

I can't read rest of message. Booting in single user mode and trying to
start xfs with following command(start and restart):

/etc/rc.d/init.d/xfs restart

produces following error. This same message is produced when running
normal startup and xfs is started automatically:

Starting X Font Server: xfs error: Config : can't open configuration
file /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fs/config
xfs error: fatal: couldn't read config file

The config file above is there I can read it and it appears O.K. Not
sure what it should say. Permissions are r/x for world on that file
and all the way back to /.

There is no stale lock file in /var/lock/subsys.

ANY help is appreciated.

I installed RH6.0 a while ago on a dual boot setup. 'Custom' install was
fine, no data lost from the DOS partition. It devoured about 450MB if my

The output of Linux fdisk would have been more useful. Why such a big
/boot (16 MB should be more than enough)? What partition type is hda6? I
would think that type 'b' would work (type 'c' is used for FAT32
partitions larger than 1024 cyl). If that still doesn't work try making
the extended partition type 'f'.

My laptop works fine with the following, but I formatted D: from Win98se:

Disk /dev/hda: 255 heads, 63 sectors, 1099 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 bytes

Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/hda1 1 653 5245191 b Win95 FAT32
/dev/hda2 * 654 655 16065 83 Linux /boot
/dev/hda3 656 1099 3566430 f Win95 Ext'd (LBA)
/dev/hda5 656 872 1743021 83 Linux /
/dev/hda6 873 897 200781 82 Linux swap
/dev/hda7 898 1099 1622533+ b Win95 FAT32

Note that where /boot is does not make any difference other than keeping
it under cyl 1024 unless your lilo can do otherwise. Here I did not want
to mess up my existing hda1, but for hda on my main PC, I put /boot first,
and that also works fine.
