This might be one problem. Enlightenment l00ks neet, but it uses a lot
of resources. FVWM or especially TWM might be faster. To be fair, once
it loads (on my AMD K5-75 with 48M RAM), it's just as snappy as any other
WM. I don't think it would be useful on a 4MB '386...
Also, see if there's an accellerated X server available for your card.

My hard disk has 2100 cylinders, but somehow my extended partition only
runs to 1789 cylinders. 4996649 unallocated sectors are reported when I
verify the partition table under Linux fdisk.
I'd like to create a new Linux partition on the drive, /dev/hda11, but I
can't because my extended partition is full. Is there a tool that will
let me edit the ending cylinder of my extended partition? I'd rather
not delete and recreate everything.

i think it might be a little easier if you just list all the daemons that
are starting up in your runlevel. that way somebody can just take quick
look and give you a quick rundown. later. jer

Subject: problems with installation of redhat 6.2
Date: Sat, 09 Sep 2000 18:45:05 GMT
Hello all Hackers around the world....
I have a great question.
I just get a second pc from a frend it's an old one and i wanted to install
RedHat 6.2 on it.
Well I miss a bootdisk so i thought"What if i start the first pc where
Redhat already exzists and booting from CD-rom .after a while i get the
questions to install or upgrade, Well i choosed Upgrade and upgraded one
file. The trick what was in my mind was that after upgrading the installation
asks me or if i want to create a bootdisk so i did. I rebooted the first pc
and pulled out the bootfloppy i just created."
Well the bootfloppy i puted into the second pc and start to install RedHat
6.2 like the first pc and booted from floppy.Well after booting there were
some messages and at one time it all stopped....
"this is the last message"

Well as i mentioned before i already have redHat 6.2 on my first pc so
installation isn't so difficult to me but this?????????
I also thought that it could be that the bootdisk i created on the first pc
was actually meant for the first pc so al the data was stored on the floppy
what already exzists on the first pc.Maybe this could be the problem.....
I also tried to Boot from cdrom but i can't access the BIOS because the
second pc is actually a verry old one(Compaq pressario 633) i also puted in
a bigger Harddisk for space so i can be able after the installation to start
up my Xwindow.....(YES WITHOUT THE S!!!!!!!)
Ok now i also heard that there is a possebitlity to create a bootdisk from
DOS. but what are the commands for this to do???
Well, I hope somebody could help me.......
Greatfully THNX to those who can solve my problems and give me the right
sollution to this.

I cannot say what happened, but still, if you do
findpart all +fat fp.txt
and post the content from fp.txt, I might be able to give you an
evaluation.
There is a risk that partitions overlap, and in that case nothing of
cause should be written to partitions that might overlap the lost
partition.

Subject: Will this machine work ?
Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Date: Sat, 09 Sep 2000 20:20:41 GMT
I am planning on ordering the following machine from
microchipcomputers.com, in Austin. I was wondering if anyone had had
problems making these components work under linux:
case: Super ATX Fulltower 300W p/s $69
cpu: AMD Thunderbird K7 800 MHz $199
cpu fan: Thermal Take Golden Orb Slot A $19
motherboard: Abit ATX Duron/Thunderbird 5/1 KT7 $172
RAM: 128 Mb ECC PC-133 SD-RAM $177
hard drive: Maxtor IDE 40 GB 7200rpm ATA100 $225
floppy dirve: Mitsumi 3.5" $13
monitor: Viewsonic 17" M70B $289
video card: Hercules AGP 64MB Prophet-II GTS GeForce2 $399
sound card: CreativeLabs PCI SoundBlaster PCI128 $34
ethernet: 3Com PCI 10/100 (3c905c) $44
modem: PhoebeMicro ISA Hardware 56k v.90 $44
Ok, so a few notes: the modem is actually going in someone else's
machine, which uses windows most of the time, so linux compatibility
is less of an issue here.
The video card is one part that I'm worried about. Does work ? Does
it use binary-only nVidia drivers ? What about Xfree 4.0 or 4.01 ?
Will the K7 800 go into the Abit KT7 motherboard ? I'm getting these
over the web, so I can't open up all the boxes and make sure
everything looks like right connectors at the store, which is what I
usually do.
Is the Golden Orb fan over kill ? I want to be conservative, and it
is cheap compared to the cost of a new chip.
Any problems with the ATA/100 stuff under linux ? The ATA/100 ide
stuff is built right into the motherboard, will that work ?
If there is someone out there who has already gotten linux working on
the same cpu/mother board/video card combination, I'll order this.
--Rob
P.S. If you know of a better place to buy this stuff, let me know. I
would really like a place like pc's for everyone in Cambridge, where I
could go in and show my list of components ask them about compatibilty
and linux and etc. Of course it would have to be in Austin if I am to
physically visit them.

just to answer a few general quetions...
your fan is fine but it wont work with linux
(ok ...i will not make it as a comedian)
but seriously...when you're going to be investing in a nice setup like you
propose...why skimp on the fan...sure any fan will be just fine...but
sure...get the best.
i just don't know the specifics of your particular modem...just do *not*
get a winmodem...the type designed only for windows...
the biggest nightmare for linux users.

Subject: Slow Modem after 2.0.35 -> 2.2.16 Upgrade
Date: Sat, 9 Sep 2000 17:08:52 -0400
I was running IP Masquerade on a 486 machine with Slackware 3.6 (2.0.35
kernel), with an external ZOOM Modem. I put in a SIIG Trio 2P1S Plus ISA
Card for the modem. It is 16650 UART chip. Under Slackware 3.6, setserial
identified it as a 16550A. This setup has been working well for about a
year.
But I wanted to upgrade to get the full 16650 support, so I recently
installed Slackware 7.1 (2.2.16 kernel). Setserial idenitifed it as a
16650V2 UART. But I was getting extremely low data transfer rates < 1k/s.
The modem lights show that a 56k connection is being made. During a
transfer the Download light is steady on, but it appears that the Upload
light is on much more frequently than before. I disabled all the
masquerading and logged in to the linux server and manually started PPP
with ppp-go, but still have the same problem, so it is not the masquerading,
it is a kernel/PPP/serial problem.
I restored the old Slackware 3.6 system (from the tar backup I made before
the upgrade) and the system is working again, back to full transfer rates
(~5k/s).
Does anyone have any ideas on what I should "tinker" with to get the new
system working right?

Okay, the problem's now fixed. It turned out to be because despite
having gcc, I didn't have gcc++ (although I had pgcc++, but it
apparently was useless in this case). A simple enough problem, but one
which took several hours to diagnose. Never mind; it's been a learning

Partition Magic by PowerQuest allows one to resize Linux and
DOS/Windows partitions,

It's not without its risks. Partition Magic 4.0 worked for me, and
that is quite an old version. Mine came on a CD with "PC User"

Hey Charlie... I have the exact same problem and would like to keep
contact in the event of a solution ... There are drivers that are posted
for the RH6.0 at Promise but they removed the tips on installation. I
have both of my HD runnin into seperate channels on the card itself and
use a multiboot config with w2k on top of a dos partition. Some have
suggested that I plug the drive to the board and install. Then put in
drivers for the U66 and reconnect to card. Ain t happening because I
rebuilt my machine countless times. Cygwin is great for editing the files
in a windows environment (on the redhat page).
please let me know if you re able to solve. Also - I did find one driver
for the card but it was from a taiwan university student and I wasn t
comfortable with testing those waters.

The "Custom install" option will prevent any automatic partition table
changes.
You will be prompted to create your own linux partitions using your choice
of the Disk Druid or fdisk programs. Just be sure to leave your win (vfat)
partitions untouched during that process! Read the "Install Guide" for info.
on what partitions (boot, usr, swap, etc.) and sizes to create.
Additionally the lilo portion of the setup will add a boot setting for
booting to the win OS upon finding the bootable win partition.
Hope this helps - bluster

>Hey Charlie... I have the exact same problem and would like to keep
