Fetchmail downloads mail from pop servers, and then dumps it to
port 25, so you need sendmail (or something similar, like
postfix, etc..) running.

Also, if you intend to have your mail put in separate mbox files
(rather than all into one huge one) you'll need to use procmail.

Procmail sorts mail depending on a simple ruleset that you
configure. It's really slick. You can combine this with X
tools such as gbuffy, which keep an eye on your various
mailboxes, and tell you when mail arrives (handy!). Plus,
gbuffy can keep an eye on newsgroups (handy!!).

There's also a way to configure your system so that it will tell
you if mail has arrived, even if you are running as console, and
not using X. I can't remember how I did this, but I'm sure I
could dig it up if need be.

I configured something similar on my home machine a few months
ago, using fetchmail, sendmail, procmail, gbuffy, and mutt. So
if you are interested in doing this sort of thing, email me,
and I'll dig up the links that I used.

later,

   Hello all,

I get the message "Can not allocate colormap
entry..." in spite of the fact that
I have an SVGA monitor and SVGA driver loaded (at
least that's what I see as installed). What could
be the problem ? I am using RH 6.1 on a machine which
has SVGA support (i.e. graphics card).

   Thanks in advance.

Date: Sun, 10 Sep 2000 05:40:24 GMT

   Hello all,

My question is regarding the audio support
in RH 6.1. I can play a CD using the CD
player that GNOME provides and listen to it
from the audio port of my sound card. However,
when I try to run realplayer, it complains that
"Another device is using the audio device",
though no other device possibly could lock that
resource at that time(no, I was not using the
   CD player).

Does this mean that somehow the audio support
did not get compiled when I built the kernel ?
Otherwise what could be the problem ?

   Thanks in advance,
   - Swapnajit.

/etc/security/console.perms

If you wipe out the primary slave drive, all your drive letters would change. C
and D (formerlyE unless you lock it down to E).
You cannot access the linux drive on windows 98 unless you get some third party
software.
You can access windows 98 from linux.
Yes, it is safe to install linux with Windows 98, but you should alway back up.

Hi there,

I'm using Suse 6.4 together with Helix Gnome. When I start Gnome using
startx, everything is fine. Now I tried to configure GDM to have a
graphical login. I see the login window, but when I try to login the
screen briefly flashes and then I am back in the login window. This
happens for root and other users. If I am using KDM or XDM everything
works.

Any suggestions ?

Thanx.

What is the ipchains command to forward incoming connections on port 80 to a
different computer on my lan? yes, i have searched faqs and websites, but
they are all too hazy when it comes to this issue.

Also, What could be causing my internet connection speeds to drop
dramatically when routed through my linux server? Could it be that its a
60mhz computer? or is it a different problem?

thank you

Hi;

Thanks for your reply and your suggestions. I will check out the pppd
man page and try out the novj option.

As I have already tried ping other ips. Namely 137.82.43.58 and
www.excite.com. With the same results.

I know a few things about computers - but not Unix or
Linux.

What is it that I need to know to install Linux?

I am currently reading the RUTE guide but without Linux
installed it is not as rigorous - On the other hand this guide
gives a good description of the Linux landscape.

Does anyone have any thoughts or suggestions as to what
might be helpful reading for someone like me?

As I said, it didn't happen in RH 6.0.

Enable 16, 24 or 32 bpp mode for X. When starting X from text mode,
try "startx -- -bpp 32". If X is started automatically, reconfigure
for a higher number of colours by re-running Xconfigurator. You could
also just edit /etc/X11/XF86Config and set the variable "Depth" in
section "Screen" (all of them!), subsection "Display", to 16, 24, or
32.

Check whether you have esd running. This a sort of mixer process; it
allows several processes to access your sound hardware at the same
time, as long as they do so through esd. Of course, while esd is
running, no process can access the sound card through "normal" means,
i.e. without going through esd. So, if realplayer does not know about
esd, they cannot both run at the same time.

Buy a "distribution" of linux. These come with install guides, users
guides, etc. and the information covered is,
of course, exactly what is needed to insure success for most of the
people, most of the time. Don't worry a
lot about which distro, they all result in putting linux on the machine.
After you've got it running, the 'net is a
marvelous resource.

I answered your previous one, but to answer this more specifically ...
:)

Although there isn't quite a general way at the moment, a lot of kernel
options cause entries to be created in the virtual /proc filesystem. If
you have SCSI emulation, you will have /proc/scsi/ide-scsi (I think -
I'm working this out from the kernel source, so I might be wrong).

I can't see an easy way to find out about what processor type your
kernel's compiled for, though.

Have a look in gdm's log files; they should be somewhere like
/var/log/gdm. There may be something useful in your syslog too
(/var/log/messages, /var/log/syslog, I'm not sure exactly where SuSE
puts it).

I've had random problems with display manager authentication before that
I never managed to track down; in the end I just switched to one of the
other display managers and figured life was too short.
