Hello folks:

I have Debian 2.2 and am trying to upgrade the kernel to hopefully resolve
some issues with my soundcard and other hardware. The latest kernel I
found is 2.4.1, and I have had some unusual problems with it.

On the last recompile I did:

/lib/modules/2.4.1/modules.dep is of zero size, even though I did a
   make modules
and
   make modules_install

and the several modules that were compiled were installed in that tree.

Still, the kernel boots at startup, but no modules load. Attempts to load
them with insmod, depmod or modprobe result in the kernel not being able
to find the modules.

Can anyone suggest what I did wrong, or what I need to do to get this
thing going, and to get some entries into modules.dep (other than by
hand)?

I've been playing around with building bootable floppies
with specialized tools.

I'm looking for info on building floppies using RedHat 7.0
as the base dist. I've already looked at the linux router project
floppyfw and tomsrtbt.

are there any other good site I should check out?

Yup, update your modutils package. You can try to grab the package from testing
but it probably depends on libc62.2. So grab the source deb and compile it
yourself

apt-get source modutils (pointed at a Woody mirror) then something like...

dpkg-buildpackage -rfakeroot

to compile the package for your system. You will need some dev packages for
this.

So my problem is that for some reason I can't get Lilo to get past the LI
when trying to boot Linux from my /hdc. However by copying the image to
the /boot directory of the Linux I have on hda, I can fool it into booting
Linux on hdc.

So...I was wondering if I ran Lilo with root=hda from the hdc Linux, it
would write it's stuff to hda and maybe I could then fire it up. But I was
worried that if I did that that it would screw up the info already written
to the mbr of hda by the Linux on hda. You get what I'm trying to say?

It seems difficult to explain but from what you and others are saying for a
given machine what Lilo writes to the mbr mentioned in root= is the same
regardless and it is what is in boot= that is specific to the Linux package.

Yes No

Yes, it's the same old tune. I keep rephrasing the question to get other
opinions and to clarify it for myself.

Yes that was a typo.

It makes no difference.

Well I don't know if it's relevent but I have the rescue disk created by
the Linux on hdc. It uses grub and gives the option of booting from the
floppy or from hdc. It will boot from hdc from that prompt but maybe by
then it has the info it needs, I don't know???

> You can try this by overwriting the MBR (on hda that is) with lilo code to

The OS/2 bootmanager is on sda. It calls the Lilo thingie from hda7 which
works for the Linux on hda7 and by having the image from hdc in the /boot
of hda7 alongside the one for hda7.

I just wrote a long message talking about wanting to try what you said
Currently the Linux on hda is booting from hda7 and the lilo there has
root=hda7. From what I got from the messages, I believe that if I get the
lilo from hdc to write to boot block of hda7 it could work. Now I boot to
hdc by chaining through hda7 AND by having the image on the /boot of hda7.

It's all getting on my nerves. If I knew for sure that the problem was
because the bios can't boot from the 3rd drive, I would take the time to
reinstall...but that is such a lot of work! Where I use the machine for
the business, I can't have it screwed up for very long.

My system is a A7V BIOS 1005D, 900MHz,256Mb, IBM ATA100 HD connectedto

Which distrubution should I try? Any problems to look out for installing on

Hello. Some assistance is required. I am somewhat new to Linux and so
far had quite the lengthy experience setting it up successfully.
Currently I have Mandrake set up. Everything was function normally
(after my 75th time installing some form of Linux) until I started
playing around with Enlightenment.
I was trying out some of the e.themes when I chose one that uses a very
small font for its menus. Since I set up Xwindows for high resolution,
the menus are now about the size of my finger nail and the options are
nearly invisible.
So here is my question <finally :o)> How can I switch to the default
e.theme without having to initiate xwindows? Since I can't see my menu
options, I can't start the gui theme manager and haven't had success in
finding any console-based theme configurator.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!

Hi, there,

under Windows98. I downloaded the driver 3c59x from 3COM homepage,
rebuild it in my computer, copy it to /lib/moduls/2.2.14-5.0/, added
the line
    alias eth0 3c59x
to /etc/conf.modules, run depmod, run ifup, run insmod, reboot the
computer ...
It failed to work.

When I run "insmod eth0", it showed:
                init_module: Device or resource busy.
When I run "ifup eth0", it showed:
                Delaying eth0 initialization.
When I reboot the system, it also showed: Delaying eth0
initialization.

Do you have any idea what went wrong?

Thanks.

How exactly ? My ISP allocates me a static IP, but I assume only the

Or do you mean I tell the windoze clients to use the linux box lan

I was trying to reduce the windows partition using a tool which I had

third time I got it wrong. Everytime before I reduce partition, I used to
defrag and proceed. Probably 3rd time I reduced the partition so less ( from
650 Mb to 600 Mb) that some of the Non-movable files which I used to see
during defrag, got out of the partition ( this is only my guess). I have not
formatted any of the win partitions. I have my data fully backed up, so no
problem there. But I would definitely like to revive win95 and get to know
the cause first than reinstall.

I can boot from win95 startup disk and then change to C drive. That is all I
can do in C drive.

Thanks again
