These things are probabily "triggered" by the initialization of
services and deamons, this is not kernel-dependent. Check into your
/etc/rc.d/rc?.d directory what you execute at the startup. The ?
means the normal initlevel you run (usually 3 or 5).
Or better, this is in the RedHat distribution, different distribution
can have different directory, so check your distribution-related
documentation.
It there is a script called Sxxpcmcia, this means that your machine
try to initialize the PCMCIA driver. If the driver is not compiled or
available to the kernel, you will see some errors.

Anaconda is RedHat's install script written in Python. (An Anaconda is

I installed my Lan card (rtl8139) in Linux tried to use broadband in
my linux. But it doesn't work.
I use ifconfig eth0 to check it whether my config works or not. Linus
doesn't show me the inet addr, Bcast, Mask and the interrupt for lan
card.
In netconf, I enter eth0 in device and rtl8139 as module, leaving irq
and i/o blank. Also, dhcp is chosen.
In win 98, my card configuration is
Irq is 11, i/o is 1400. How can I config it in Linux? irq=11, i/o=1400?
Pls help me and give me some suggestion to overcome this problem.

I'm no expert by any means, but you might need to ifconfig and route
them. Something like
ifconfig eth1 <ip_address>
ifconfig eth2 <ip_address>
route add -host <ip_address> dev eth1
route add -host <ip_address> dev eth2
You're probably going to need other routes in there too, but without
knowing more about your network layout I can't say. Having 3 NICs I
guess you kind of know about routing though.
> Also, just wondering what my Hostname should be? do I need to give
it a domain or anything?
You don't need to if you're on a local network (I use 192.168.x.x) and
then it can be anything you want. If you've been given a public
address, then you need to set it to that (at least for the IP of the
NIC connected to that). I'm struggling a little bit here, so anyone
please feel free to jump in and correct me.

Hello,
I use a RedHat 6 kernel 2.2.5 as a ppp server for PC clients under
Win95/98/NT. For that I use mgetty with the AutoPPP facility.
I also have a dialup ISDN connection to my ISP using DIALD and Ipchains for
my LAN
All is working very well.
My question is:
How to force the incoming call to always use pppd with ppp1 interface
How to force the ISDN call to my ISP to always use pppd with ppp0 interface
The problem is:
First case
If diald has already started a ppp link to my ISP using ppp0 an incoming
call will start mgetty/AutoPPP which will use ppp1
Second case
If the ISP link is not running
an incoming call will start mgetty/AutoPPP for use ppp0
and if diald start just after that, the ppp link to the ISP will use ppp1
So I want to force diald to always use pppd with ppp0 and mgetty/AutoPPP to
force pppd to always use ppp1
In the pppd man page I found the environment variable IFNAME, but How to use
it the right way ?
Thank in advance for your help,

Subject: Suse 7.0 pro + yast2 + modem = no install :-(
Date: Mon, 11 Sep 2000 10:56:14 +0100
Hi,
I have just spent all weekend trying to install the above from DVD (I assume
CDs would be the same - but I'm not trying yet !).
The symptoms are that near the end of the installation a red box appears
stating that an error occured in the installation - not very useful !
However, after searching news archives I found other people had the same
problem and that If I selected the alt-f3/4 terminal screens I could get
the error message, which I did . It says something on the following lines :
/lib/YaST2/bin/YaST2: line 162: 60 segmentation fault y2bignfat
"$modulename" $moduleargs qt -T -style=platinum -fn
"-gnu-unifont-medium-r-normal--16-160-75-75-p-80-iso10646-1" -geometry
640x480 -no-wm /lib/YaST2/bin/YaST2: line 163: 56 Killed x -deferglyphs
16vt07 2>/dev/tty8 1> &2 /lib/YaST2/bin/YaST2.Start return code is 35584
(errno = 2)
After much testing I found that it is caused by leaving my modem (Pace solo
external com2) on during installation !
If I switched it off it would install, however when I try to setup the
Kinternet it says my modem connection is not configured. If I run yast2 and
try to detect the modem it fails - despite the rx/tx lights flashing.
What can I do ? Is there a patch to yast 2 to make it work, is there a
known problem with this and other modems, can I use kinternet to setup the
modem correctly, or do I use another method ?
Also why is Xfree86 version 3 and not 4 installed ? (using a TNT2u card)
is it safe to run sax2 and let it convert to version 4 ? I tried it a
couple of times and it really screwed my keyboard up - no keys matched
reality ! Is this realted to the modem or other hardware problem, did I do
something wrong - or should I stick to Mandrake which detects everything
nicely ?
TIA

Subject: Re: RAID problem - md version?
Date: Mon, 11 Sep 2000 12:34:11 +0100
Okay, we've now got a bit further - I'd forgotten to run lilo to
install the new kernel. That's done and now I don't get the md
version error message. Now when I boot I get a prompt in mid-boot
that says:
Starting up RAID devices: /dev/md0: Invalid argument
/dev/md0 must be a nonpersistent RAID0 or LINEAR array
*** An error occurred during the RAID startup
*** Dropping you to a shell; the system will reboot
*** when you leave the shell
Give root password for maintenance
(or type Control-D for normal startup):
Ctrl-D just reboots. So I enter the root password and get a prompt
up. running 'mkraid --really-force /dev/md0' gives:
DESTROYING the contents of /dev/md0 in 5 seconds. Control-C if unsure!
handling MD device /dev/md0

disk 2: /dev/hdc1, 3923104kB, raid superblock at 3923008kB
mkraid: aborted, see the syslog and /proc/mdstat for potential clues
/proc/mdstat is size 0, so no clues there, and nothing's changed since
bootup in /var/log/messages. Since the bootup message mentioned
something about being nonpersistent I changed the
persistent-superblock value in my /etc/raidtab from 1 to 0, but all
that does is stop the 'disk n: ...' lines from appearing when mkraid
is run.
I also changed the type of the three partitions to 0xfd from 0x83 to
see if that helped, but still no change. Here once again is
/etc/raidtab:
raiddev /dev/md0
raid-level linear
nr-raid-disks 3
persistent-superblock 1
device /dev/hda3
raid-disk 0
device /dev/hdb1

Thank you, Colin, for helping me.
Yes, it's Version 2.8.3rel.1 (23 Apr 2000). Sorry for fat fingers.
dpkg -p menu gives: version 2.1.5-3
ldd /usr/bin/update-menus gives:
libstdc++-libc6.0-1.so.2 => not found
libm.so.6 => /lib/libm/so.6 (0x40017000)
libc.so.6 => /lib/libc.so.6 (0x40034000)
/lib/ld-linux.so.2 => /lib/ld-linux.so.2 (0x400000000)
Yes, you're right, lynx seems to run fine, except that it spends a lot
of time on startup looking for "Not-Yet-Configured" and its varients.
When I try to configure it in dselect, I can't, and I don't know another
way to configure it.
Thanks, again, for your help. Have a good day.

I have them installed correctly... It's not rocket science. The kernel module
compiled and loaded. No other GL libraries around... Renamed the glx and GLCore
libraries from XFree86. Double checked the XFree86.0.log file to make sure.
Had hardware acceleration going on the gears demo. Start almost any of the GL
xscreensaver modules and my machine locks up hard, and I know I'm not the only
one with this problem.
Like it or not, there *is* a problem with their drivers.

linux (with the stndard drvers that are in the kernel 2.2.17 source
tree)
the closest match i can find in the `make config` options is
Ensoniq ES1370 based PCI sound cards
CONFIG_SOUND_ES1370
or
Ensoniq ES1371 based PCI sound cards
CONFIG_SOUND_ES1371
although the comments tell me that the driver is suitable for the SB64
pci cards.
has anyone had success with a sb128 pci s/card. tia

Subject: Suse--how to make a boot disk?
Date: Mon, 11 Sep 2000 07:40:41 -0500
Is there an easy way to create a boot disk for Suse Linux? I
installed Suse on my hard drive but didn't create a boot disk when I
installed it. I have been booting from the CD-ROM.

Subject: Problem Upgrading with YaST and Packages on Local HD
Date: Mon, 11 Sep 2000 13:05:23 GMT
I have SuSE Linux 6.0 running on a Pentium II with SiS 6326 AGP video
accelerator architecture (dual boot with W98, but only W98 has Internet
access currently). I have been running Linux in command prompt mode while
waiting for support for the SiS chip, etc., under X. Support is now there
in xf86-3.3.6 and I've downloaded the rpm packages from a SuSE mirror site.
Here's my main problem: YaST refuses to install my FTP downloaded rpm
files. Here are the details:
1) I downloaded the xf86 files via FTP under Win98 and copied them to
/tmp/System_Updates/x_Windows
2) I boot Linux (from HD) login as root, start YaST (Version 0.991.1) and
select "Adjustments to Installation," then "Select Installation Medium,"
then "Installation from Reachable Directory" -- so that I can point YaST to
my downloaded files as the source for the update.
3) Up pops a box with a request that I enter the absolute path to the
directory containing the source of the packages for installation. I enter
"/tmp/System_Updates/x_Windows" and enter.
4) I get the message "Error: Could not find source directory. Could not
find the installation directory. Please enter an installation directory."
5) I've Alt+F2ed over to another session, logged in and checked mount. /tmp
is there, in fact, it refuses to mount it again. I've repeated the process
several times checking the directory path, etc., always with the same
result.
What am I doing wrong? Is it possible to use YaST to install downloaded
packages? For consistency, I'd prefer to use YaST for the install, but
would rpm followed by xfSetup be an alternative?
Another question: The FTP site had numerous rpm files within a folder
structure that identified it as the xf3.3.6 upgrade to my SuSE 6.0 system.
I know that I need the svga server, the client, window managers, etc., etc.,
but what are all these files? I've run rpm queries against a number of them
to find out their descriptions and what they contain, but this is not very
satisfactory -- is there some documentation that would be more helpful?
Given that I want to end up with a full set of source, binary, documentation
files, fonts, etc., which specific files should I choose? For example,
xxprt-3.3.6-18.i386.rpm is identified by rpm query as the binary to the
xprint server. Not enough for me to tell if I want it!!
Many thanks,
