Bill's right on target, (as usual) I have actually seen this more than
once. I do NOT understand it, but it's not uncommon for linux to misbehave,
Doze to work flawlessly. These issues are almost always memory of some kind,
see if you can borrow some memory and replace yours. Sometimes, merely
removing and reseating the sticks will make it go away, next try turning off
cache in the BIOS, and yes, it's slow, but if stable, there's the culprit.
I have also seen this from a VIDEO card, some timing confusion is all I can
guess, and that's a pure guess.

Chances are Red Hat is trying to load a driver module for the sound
card. Type "cat /proc/modules" to see a list of modules in use. One
should have a name that bears some resemblance to your sound card.
Locate the reference to that module in /etc/conf.modules and comment it
out. If that doesn't work, try moving the module file from
/lib/modules/x.y.z/misc (where x.y.z is your kernel version) to
somewhere else. That'll definitely prevent it from loading.

I've installed Mandrake Linux 7.1, on a machine that used to run WinNT. Now
I don't have internet anymore.

We have a domain called LANGROUP, a WINS server (10.0.0.2), and I've got 3
IP's of the ISP's DNS's.

I can point the browser to http://10.0.0.2 and I get the stuff that's on
there, however, once I try to point to e.g. http://www.yahoo.com
it comes back immediately saying host could not be found.

I'm stuck. Where do I start? I've read :
Ethernet-HOWTO
Networking-HOWTO
WWW-user-HOWTO

What can I do??

THanks,

Subject: eth0/1 delay initialization after upgrade kernel from 2.0.36 to 2.2.17
Date: Tue, 12 Sep 2000 16:38:00 GMT

It's strange, I have a working system (more than 1 year) with kernel
2.0.36 with two network cards installed. Network card modules are
loaded at boot up by have them listed in /etc/conf.modules. It's been
fine. Yesterday I upgrade the kernel to 2.2.17 (you can tell I
haven't done any upgrade for a while), compile the modules and install
them. I've checked the modules sit on /lib/modules/2.2.17, including
the required network card modules which are ne.o and ne2k-pci.o.

However, when I reboot the machine with new kernel, the following
message come out :

Delaying eth0 initialization
Delaying eth1 initialization

It's a RH system, no clue at all, next thing I'll try manually load
the modules and activate the eth0/1.

Any comment are welcome!

This site looks great -- very specific help on debugging a connection.
I'll look into this some more tonight when I get home.

I think I do have the DNS servers set up correctly, though I can't be sure
yet. I have problems even reaching computers (including the DNS servers)
by IP address. Packets are sent, but not returned. And my routing table
looks to me to be okay, also. I will look at it more carefully, though.
I'm not an expert, but the routing table looks the same as it does when I
dialup into the servers that always work, except the server's IP is
obviously different. Is it possible to somehow have packets received
ignored or sent elsewhere?

The one time I did get the desired dialup working, I had played around a
lot with my hostname/identity stuff. Unfortunately, after disconnecting I
was not able to connect properly again, and I haven't been able to repeat
that ever since. I've been working on this problem for a couple months
now!

I'm wondering if there's anything stupid I could have done in setting up my
hostname? I think I had it set to "queeg500.mynet", with the idea in mind
that "mynet" refered to 192.168.0.0. I haven't been able to find anything
that describes exactly how I should have this set. Could anything in this
configuration confuse the dialup server and cause it to send packets
intended for my computer elsewhere? Maybe my computer is receiving packets
and re-routing them? But I'm fairly certain I don't have routed operating.

Well, I'll print out your ppp web pages, and work more on it tonight.
Thanks again for the info.

Hi,

I am/was running RedHat 6.1 until I modified rc.local to try to start
the font server but it fails and the boot process halts. I am looking
for a way to edit the rc.local file but I do not have a boot diskette
except for the RedHat installation CD/diskette. Is there a way I can
bypass all the installation so that I just get a root login from which
I hope to be able to mount the hard disk partition and edit the file?
Alternatively, I do not suppose there is any utility which allows me to
access a Linux partition from Windows (just a thought).

Could you please email a copy of your response to me at

I've used the Ultra66 in a couple of linux machines here without any problem
(all have intel 440bx chipsets). Now I have a Celeron 366 with a Tekram

1) install went fine, I booted, did "cat /proc/pci", found device, rebooted,
"linux ide2=0xd400", etc...
2) get 2.2.17, get 2.2.17 ide patches (www.linux-ide.org)

Now I have to do a hard reset (can't do a soft one)...

Tried:
0) put Promise card in PCI slot #1 just in case
1) make zlilo instead of bzlilo because someone posted to deja w/ "not
working when using bzip2
2) updated Promise Ultra66 BIOS to latest on promise.com page
3) got 2.2.16 and tried the ide patches on it
4) played with all the options in the BIOS

Now I'm stuck... WTF is wrong with this thing!

Thanks,

The mt command can be used to move around on a tape,

e.g., mt -f /dev/st0 fsf 1

will skip the first file on tape

mt -f /dev/st0 rewind

will rewind the tape, etc. See the man pages for mt.

What did Todd mean by 'transfer my backups over to it'? To use the
tape for backups, or to move existing backup files onto tape?

Perhaps the most familiar set of tools for backup (by partition) are
dump and restore: see their man pages. I have found them very useful
over the years.

You'll have to delete that formatted, vacant partition and
then create the Linux partitions you require within that
unpartitioned space.
