In fact, I tried in.ftpd also to no avail.
I tried telnetd and in.telnetd as well, and the services never start up.

No mystery,
The FAT filesystems don't support these concepts, therefor you cannot
change them. You can however supply option like uid, guid and umask to
make use of a certain mode to mount the entire FS, but you will not be
able to change one single file on the FS.

I have recently installed linux and bsd, and I have them + windows working fine,
except for one (fairly major) thing -

How on Earth do I write a dialup script, by hand?

Where is it, what do I write in it etc. - eek! I've been using gui's for so
long now I've gone soft in the head. ; )

Sorry for such a dumb question, but any answer will be gratefully utilised. I
like reading books, so if anyone can suggest one or two, that'd be great in
itself.

I often turn to the internet for info, so not being able to access it on all
three os's really frustrates and limits me.

Many thank you's in advance,

Subject: Mandrake 7.1 install problems
Date: Wed, 13 Sep 2000 06:28:41 GMT

When I attempt to install Mandrake 7.0 or 7.1 I cannot get the install to
complete. I have tried booting from CD (7.1) (gives me a probing SCSI)
and stalls forever. When I try starting from a floppy, I get the same
thing). I do not have any SCSI devices (or card) installed in the
system. I suspect that it's calling my ATA 66 controller a scsi
controller. When I attempt 7.0, it tells me this, asks for me to put in a
blank floppy, and creates a boot disk with what are presumably some work-
around drivers. It runs thru it's boot laundry list, but stalls again
after correctly identifying my hard drives. I can't get this to work.
Strange thing is, I have gotten a linux install from 7.0 previously on
this same system...the difference was (at the time) I had an Adaptec
2940AU scsi controller card and a Sony SCSI CDR drive. Now my hardware
configuration is as follows.

ABIT BE6 board (latest BIOS - Not a BE6 II)
Two hard drives installed, both Maxtor, one 27GB, the other 20GB. The 27
is the WinME boot drive installed on ATA66 controller 1. The 20GB is
installed on ATA66 controller 2 (as the slave drive).
CD-ROM is on primary standard IDE controller..it is a Plextor 12X/10X/32X
CDRW. The second is a Memorex 48X ide CD-ROM drive installed on the
standard IDE controller (The BE6 has 4 IDE controllers...2 ATA66..2 UDMA
33).
Processor is a slot 1 P3700E.
Audio is SBLIVE Gold.
Linksys Ethernet card installed.
Video is a 3D Prophet 2 GTS (32mb NVIDIA GeForce 2).

I'm no newbie (to Linux), but I'm not far from it. I'm pretty sure that
this is an IDE contoller problem, but I'm at a loss as to how to work
around it. I've done some preliminary searches on the Mandrake site, I've
checked the board manufacturer site...no go. Any ideas would be greatly
appreciated. No problems from ME, except that it's Windows. It also uses
virtual mode DOS, so I've had no luck getting Mandrake set-up from within
Windows. Thanks in advance...

Usually yes, of course if you add/modify/change configuration, remove
or move files around...

I don't think that's possible, to support all the option a program
must contain all the required code, it's not the same turn off an
option with a configuration file (read at runtime) or recompile the
code without that option...

>are there any differences between an

The src.rpm contains the source of the package. Basically, a src.rpm
is the same of a tar.gz package, you can unpack and compile the
program, or execute the "trick" to recompile directly the sources
into the binary package.

That's not necessary. Usually a linux program is composed by some
executable files (binaries), some libraries and some script. If you
substitute the files, the older are simply replaced. You do not have
to uninstall the older before. If you install PHP like an apache
modules, you have an .so module and nothing else.

>as far as i can tell on installing software it's similar to setting off a

Well, this is the reason why backup are important... but the "all
sorts of places" usually is a list of 4-5 directories, not more...

>on uninstalling will i have to go through and find these files manually or
>is there a script, or at least a log file, which can show me the installed

Usually, if a program is installed with the 'make install', the
'make uninstall' does the trick. Read the documentation of the
program for this.

>i'm sorry if there's a lot here but this topic isn't covered in many places.

Linux is designed for 'hacker' (meaning people that enjoy play with
the things), so it's normal for an hacker dissecting the makefile to
locate and understand how it works and how to do the things manually.

>if there is a good link for this kind of stuff please let me know.

There is no a "bible" about this, each program/package come with its
specific trick and trip.

First of all, you'll need to check that the linux bootpartition isn't
beyond the 1024 cyl. limit, otherwise you will need to install a newer
version of lilo that supports booting from beyond that limit. (lilo >=
21.4.3 IIRC)
If you don't have this problem, all you need to do is change the
lilo.conf file and add a part for win98. Make sure to write lilo in the
root partition and not in the MBR (in lilo.conf there's a line saying
boot=/dev/hda , this must be boot=/dev/hdaXXXX, where XXXX is the
number of the root partition)
Then you must add part to boot win98, this looks like:
other = /dev/hda1
  label = win98

Now run /sbin/lilo as root and reboot
(Almost forgot this: Make sure the linux root partition is the only
active partition)

Do you have a link to reiserfs or ext3? If I have to live with these
lockups, I would prefer a filesystem that is more robust to sudden
death of the kernel. ext3 doesn't sound so bad.

It is difficult to give details when there are no indications in any
logfile. Just a kernel crash (rock solid with no sysrq
possibility). Basically I use RedHat beta 7.0 upgraded with rawhide
packages and nvidia drivers. Thats it. Now I have the feeling that
maybe my network card is interfering with the tnt2 card. IT is a 3com
3c905B card, but redhat has chosen the 3c59x driver, but I believe the
3c90x driver is better suited. Could also be that 100Mbit/sec is too
much for the card.

I am now running with 3c90x, 10Mbit and half-duplex just to see if the
improves uppon stability. Next step is to remove/exchange card for
different ones (e.g. TNT2 -> GeForce or TNT1, 3com -> Realtek).
