Do you get any messages on startup? When the list of services being
initiated comes up on boot, do httpd, smb, and nbd show up as failed?
Also, what do the respective log files show? Finally, what steps have
you taken to configure these services (including configuring their startup)?

Subject: File Server Setup - Redhat 6.1
Date: Fri, 15 Sep 2000 09:26:17 +0100

Earlier this year "PC Magazine" undertook performance testing of Redhat 6.1
against NT and Win2000. The results for Linux performance were not that
favourable straight out of the box. However suggestions were made by
experts at Redhat to enhance the performance.

Suggestions were:
Ensure NIC was running in full duplex mode
Increasing tag queueing depth for SCSI drive
Adjusting 'noatime' option to reducesystem write backs
Buffer-cache set to grow freely using 'bdflush' the exact option was
        'echo 100 5000 640 2560 150 30000 5000 1884 2>/proc/sys/vm/bdflush'

My questions are as follows:

Should the 'noatime' option be added to all volumes on all disks in the
system, or just to volumes where the majority of the data will be kept?
With regard to bdflush what are the figures after 'echo' and will this
option be permanantly kept after a system reset?

Any comments would be welcomed

Up , Host, Gateway (IIRC).

You have two of them because one is the interface address, the
other one is the network defined by the IP address/netmask combo.

With the given settings , your IP range is
209.221.101.32 network address
209.221.101.33 - 62 useable IP addresses
209.221.101.63 broadcast address

See RFC1878 for details on subnetting.

Because that is the network address.

It is. It's just not a usable IP address.

Now , where is your problem ?

I'm not sure if you are new at this, but have you read the howto on
kernel compiling? If not, do so (RTFM). Else give us some more info, on
what you did precisely (which steps you took (example): make clean &&
make dep && make xconfig && make modules && make modules_install)

I know about alot of people having trouble with this chipset (including me).
According to others it only works when you install the ALSA sound drivers
http://www.alsa-project.org/.
I didn't install these yet so I don't know.

May I suggest that you read what's written about this chip at the
comp.os.linux.hardware newsgroup (and if you don't find your solution, post
your question there also).

problem is, when I finally figured out I could get to the web with the

I will learn this OS as soon as I am finished with school. I think I like it

I have a PIII 500, 128Mb, 8.4Gb 5400rpm hd and have noticed that large
programs like netscape 6 and staroffice take ages to load. When I say ages I
mean in the region of 15 to maybe 20 seconds. Netscape 6 is obviously still
in the development stage, but I'm sure that in the dark old days of me using
win9x an equivilent sized program would not take so long. I'm not sure what
the
status of my swap partition is, but would it help at all to make sure it's
128Mb or so? I've also used hdparm to set some supposedly safe settings that
should speed it up slightly. However the new settings don't seem to make
much of a difference, if any at all. If I read up on hdparm would it be
possible to tweek it so as to make some noticeable difference?

Maybe I'm just being too fussy! Any pointers would be appreciated

Yes you can! And if you type

# cd /usr/src ; ln -s linux-2.2.14 linux

you should be able to recompile the kernel.

Maybe the real problem is that the rpm with the kernel source has never
been installed.

Hope this helps.

I'm having trouble installing my EPSON Perfection 636U USB scanner.

I did all of the things I think I'm supposed to:

1) Updated my 2.2.16 kernel with the backport patch, set USB options, recompiled,
installed usbcore, etc. I tried using 2.4.0-test7 but it keeps panicking on me.

Here are the installed modules (of importance):

scanner 4788 0 (unused)
uhci 20148 0 (unused)
usbcore 48008 0 [scanner uhci]

2) The /proc filesystem has the info on my scanner:
14 % cat /proc/bus/usb/devices

I also got sane-1.0.1, patched it for USB (off a USB page), set
/usr/local/etc/sane.d/epson.conf:

15 % cat /usr/local/etc/sane.d/epson.conf
usb /dev/usb/scanner0

Of course, having made the device:

18 % ls -la /dev/usb/scanner0
crw-rw-rw- 1 root root 180, 48 Sep 13 19:25 /dev/usb/scanner0

Every tool I use tells me the scanner is there, but scanimage can't find it:

19 % scanimage -L
20 %

Any ideas? Sometimes scanimage would hang- now it just replies with nothing.

Thanks,

Roger

OK I have been reading up on this stuff and I understand what you guys
are talking about here. Although I am still a little fuzzy when you
guys say "bitwise AND" Basically I have 32 IPs, 29 useable after you
take out .32(the network), .63(braodcast), and .33(router). I
understand the concepts of ANDing, due to my C++ background. I also
understand that as the number on my subnet mask goes down, my IP
addresses on my subnet increase. I don't quite understand the
difference between class A, B, and C networks just yet. I orignally
thought that it had to octet(like 209.x.x.x is a class A and
209.221.x.x is a class B and 209.221.101.x is a class C) but now I'm
not so sure.

just sits there. The only thing thing I can ping is .49, .63, and
32. I can't even ping my router which is .33. I can also resolve my
own hostname buschman.net.

I have called my host to verify that my numbers are correct and they
are. My DNS, gateway, subnetmask, and ip addresses are all right on
target.

Someone mentioned a problem with the firewall. Now eventhough I
haven't touched the firewall software is it possible that this is the
problem? I mean Mandrake 7.1 has a lot more RPM's and a much larger
install than did 6.1. I eventually want firewall and IP masquerading
on this machine so I believe the packages are installed, but I have to
have the machine up and running before I can consider getting knee
deep into those major headaches. So do you guys think either of these
packages could be causing me problems? If so how can I see if they
are effecting my networking? How can I disable them?

Subject: fdisk problems with large disks (255 heads, 63 sectors/track) ?
Date: Fri, 15 Sep 2000 13:44:56 GMT

Hi!

I use a RAID Array (Promise FastTrak66) with ca. 60GB. There I have
installed an ext2 Partition, beginning at 3 GB and 3 GB size.

If I use a DOS tool to make a partition (i.e. efdisk oder fdisk), FAT32/NTFS
oder ext2, then the partition ends at head 254 and sector 63. Using Linux
fdisk the partition ends at head 63 und sector 32. All other partitions
(with partition end at head 254 and sector 63) are displayed with "incorrect
end of partition" by Linux fdisk.

Using DOS/Windows I see the reverse situation: PartitionMagic shows the ext2
partition faulty, because it doesnt end at head 254 and sector 63, but head
63 and sector 32 ...

Id appreciate any advice, what could be the problem and how to solve it
(without installing new).

Regards,
Thomas.

I had a similar problem. Check the permissions on your tmp

examine the path that `metamail' is on. Does root have access
to this? Try a `set | grep tmp' from a user and root account

Hi, Eric :-)

Of course I compiled my kernels several times starting with 2.2.10,
2.2.14 also I did _read_ and print out the Manual :-)

OK my steps

make clean
make menuconfig
make bzImage ( since my kernel turns out to be rather large :-( )
make modules
make modules install
make bzdisk ( since I still boot from a floppy)

copy the new kernel to /boot/vmlinuz
and updated lilo..... :-)

so what could be the reason.... should I delete the
/lib/moduls/<version> directory and then compile the kernel again?

thanks :-)
