Elliott,
There are a couple of (several, actually) ways to use loadlin. You can
invoke it during the config.sys read at DOS boot time. You can
alternately run it from a DOS command prompt once your box has done an
otherwise normal DOS boot. You can run it from a script while within
windoz. You can launch it from the win9x desktop by clicking an icon
linked to a small batch file. You can put the loadlin and image file on
any DOS boot diskette you have lying about, and invoke a loadlin boot
immediately after having booted DOS with the disk.
I've tried and regularly use each of these methods EXCEPT the config.sys
method. It always seemed to be a method which required far too much
effort to use. Why would I edit/alter my config.sys just to boot
Linux? Not me!
For the last five years I have booted innumerable boxes with the method
described here by Micky Stein. It works, and works every time, and is
easy. Plus it doesn't involve mucking up my DOS configurations. And
you do want to mount it in the batch file as ro or read only. During
the bootup, linux remounts the drives normally part way into the linux
boot up sequence.
Here's a batch file example straight from the loadlin README file:
rem Sample DOS batch file to boot Linux.
rem First, ensure any unwritten disk buffers are flushed:
smartdrv /C
rem Start the LOADLIN process:
c:\loadlin\loadlin c:\loadlin\zimage root=/dev/hdb2 ro vga=3
^C
This example assumes a person's computer has the nasty windoz/dos
caching program called smartdrv installed. No big deal.

I got a spare drive for my old NEC Versa 4050H laptop, so I thought I'd try
an install Mandrake 7.1.
I'm having trouble with the graphics card and monitor selection. When I do
get something to work, I only get about 3/4 of the screen visible at 800x600
(256 colors). It should be able to do ths easily. If anyone's got this to
work, can they tell me what X-server settings they used.
Also, I have a Xircom PCMCIA ethernet card. Can anyone tell me what network
driver to choose. I've tried a dozen or so fromthe long list but they all
fail.

Subject: Re: newbie LILO dual-boot question
Date: Sat, 16 Sep 2000 06:50:53 GMT
Kris,
First things first. Lilo has an executable and a configuration file. =
Works something like this. =
You run an executable called lilo, and tell it to take the info in
lilo.conf, and to do the necessary things with the configuration info
and make things works right. Syntax is similar to this:
/usr/sbin/lilo /boot/lilo.conf =
By editing the lilo.conf file, you tell the system where the booting
info is at (MBR or root partition of Linux), what drive, what partition,
name of booting image, etc. =
So, in your case, by editing the lilo.conf file, and then reruning the
lilo executable, you can tell it to put the boot info anywhere you want
it. When editing the lilo.conf file, you can edit the info into the
file to create a delay in booting so that you can see the boot options,
to also see any bootup messages you wish, or to not default into
anything, but rather to wait for some input from the operator before
doing anything. This is where you would put in any of your other
operating systems, like BeOS/OS-2/BSD/NT/ETC. =
Alternately, if you put the lilo onto the boot partition, it won't
interfere with any other boot managers you might have and use. Some
people chose to not use Lilo at all, but use other linux loaders like
bootlin, loadlin, or others. People often choose this option as it
doesn't provide a way for the linux installation to touch or muck-up
your current booting manager or programs.
My lilo configurations provide for a message to flash onto the screen
with instructions for how the user should select their OS for this
session. It's here:

Of course, some of these characters only display correctly at the
console. The lilo.conf file which controls my lilo is set to NOT boot
into anything without some input from the user. =
You REALLY need to read the lilo man pages or some lilo advice at one of
th popular support sites, like http://www.mandrakeuser.org =
http://www.suse.com or any others. Lilo is very easy (not rocket
science) to understand, if you just take ten minutes to read a how-to or
a couple of paragraphs of explanation.

Having thought about this for a while, I still have absolutely no idea
how this happened. :) Try downloading the menu package straight off
ftp.debian.org or one of its mirrors (you'll find it in
/debian/dists/potato/main/binary-i386/admin), and installing it with
'dpkg -i menu_2.1.5-3.deb'.

That would make sense. You could edit /etc/lynx.cfg yourself and do what
the post-installation script for lynx does, which is to replace
"Not-Configured-Yet" on the STARTFILE line with the home page of your
choice and "news.server.dom" on the NNTPSERVER line with the hostname of
your news server.
>When I try to configure it in dselect, I can't, and I don't know another

Well, if you wanted to configure it more or less properly but just
without the broken menus, you could try 'chmod -x
/usr/bin/update-menus'. That way, scripts won't try to update your menus
but will carry on with the rest of their configuration, and you should
be able to get a dselect run to complete normally. (In this case you
don't need to edit /etc/lynx.cfg yourself. :))

Which Linux distro? For example RedHat has printtool for setting it up,
but printing was broken in RH 6.1 unless you added following to
/etc/conf.modules:
alias parport_lowlevel parport_pc
For other distros you could use magicfilter or apsfilter to automatically
print various file types besides just plain text.

Put the 'Doze CD in the CD drive and turn the computer on if your
CD drive is bootable. If not, get to a DO$ prompt, change to the CD
drive and run setup.exe.
That's the ONLY way you can get most 'Doze-only printers to
work: by installing them in 'Doze.

The only thing I can say is, recompile and read ALL of the help files
you can. There are numerous help files that say to turn some options
on and some off for specific things. In particular, there are some of
those related to network boards, firewalling, parallel port usage,
loopback devices, etc.
This applies to all releases of linux, not particular to the Mandrake
distro. I've failed on the firewall options numerous time, for
instance, and I've compiled kernels lots of times.
One rule I usually follow to avoid too many headaches: modules
that aren't necessary are better than missing modules when one
is needed. I have nothing M$-related on the premises. But, I
always compile the capability into modules just in case. This
doesn't always work. Some modules always error out for me. I
just make sure to turn those options off next time.

I don't know if it works with scsi, but there was a recent discussion
about restoring a corrupted partition table in the redhat.config
newsgroup about finding what partitions might be on the drive with:
http://www.stud.uni-hannover.de/user/76201/gpart/
and run gpart:

Actually, all that is installed. As root, from a command line try
"pump -i eth0".
Then type "ifconfig" and you are likely to have an IP and DNS and all
other details
attended to. For lots of detailed information on your lease, try "pump
-s". Note that
the computer will renew your lease unattended, when it is time. Good Luck!

any chance to get my old Mylex DCE376

It's in the Linux Hardware Compatibility HOWTO

a WD controller?
