Using the xlock from xlockmore-gl all the OpenGL screensavers work
for me. This is Debian potato upgraded to 'testing' with the NVidia
0.96 driver and a Creative GF2MX card.
However, for some reason these screensavers leak alot of memory. If
I do something like 'xlock -modelist allgl -delay 15' then my machine
with thrash itself to death within 10 minutes (128MB RAM, 256MB swap).
Also, I can only run some OpenGL things as root, not sure why. I'd
suggest you startx from a root console then run your OpenGL program.
Cheers,
Andrew

From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] (Otto J. Makela)

I assume the whole logic behind the VESA energy saving system has
changed, or something, because the settings in XF86Config-4 which
worked well with a older kernel no longer (with a hand-compiled 2.4.0)
switch my monitor to energy saving from the gdm login screen, nor does
the Gnome screen saver ever switch over to energy saving mode though
it has been set to do so. This is a RH7.0 system with XFree86 4.0.1,
the old kernel was the 2.2.16-22 that came with the system.
I got a report of a similar problem from another user, and then again,
someone else told me that it works just fine for him.
How should I proceed to figure out what's wrong?

I put together a linux box at work here, it has the DPT smartRaid VI.. It
also has 2G of RAM on it.. The install was great, simple kernel patch,
compile and install.. The RAID works great IF I tell linux that there is
only 900M RAM.. I'm not sure exactly how high I can go, but at 960M, the
RAID initialization fails and /dev/sdc is not there..
Any ideas on why this happens and how to get back over a gig of RAM?

I've set up a Laserjet 1100 printer with RedHat 6.0 and it works fine
except for the margins when printing text. When I "lpr mytextfile", it
cuts off a few lines at the top, a few lines at the bottom and a
character or two from the left. I cannot figure out how to adjust the
margins for this printer. I am using the ljet4 filter and have set the
printer up using the printtool. The margin option there is only for when
multiple pages are printed on a single page.
How can I get the lpr command to have the right margins. Should I edit
the printcap file? And if so, what part and how?
Thanks,

I have an alcatel at home dsl modem which works really well. Its just a
ethernet device basically. It has two cables. One end plugs into the
phoneline and other is a cat5 cable. With this modem, you do not need pppoe
or any other stuff. It just talks straight ethernet. The internal modems
may be a problem; but I remember reading somewhere that we may see support
for the usb ones soon. Cannot remember where I saw that at.

There are several possible causes for this. It might help if you'd post
some quantification -- time the printing of similar or identical
documents in both OSs and show the results. Ideally, include both a text
document and a graphics document. Also, note whether the delay is
between your submitting a print job and its starting or between the
printer starting to work and the job finishing.
Two specific ideas I have are:
1) Linux prints text as graphics to most non-PostScript printers, at
least from most programs. As such, it may be taking longer to print,
and there's not a lot you can do about this. This is most likely to
be a factor for high-speed (>6 ppm) laser printers, though.
2) Your parallel port settings may be sub-optimal. I believe there's a
HOWTO or FAQ that describes optimizations, such as enabling
interrupt-based printing.
If #1 is the sole cause of the problem, it'll affect text printing but
not graphics. If #2 is the sole cause, it'll affect both text and
graphics printing.

I've only heard of one external DSL modem that uses an RS-232 serial
port, and I almost couldn't believe it when I heard about it. Most
external DSL modems use Ethernet or USB connections, both of which are
capable of handling typical DSL speeds (500-1500 Kbps). The USB port is
a poor choice for Linux, though, because driver support is virtually
nonexistent. (There are rumors that drivers have been written for one
popular USB model, but they've not been released.) Internal modems are
also a bad idea for Linux for the same reason (I know of drivers for one
internal model, the Diamond 1MM -- links are on my Web page at
http://www.rodsbooks.com/network/network-dsl.html, but I've never used
this device and so can't comment on the quality of these drivers).
In sum, use an external Ethernet-interfaced modem. These will work with
any 10Base-T (or 10/100) Ethernet card with Linux support. AFAIK, there
are no external Ethernet DSL modems that are not compatible with Linux,
so this shouldn't be an issue.

IIKC you have still to put line 'lba32' to lilo.conf

It's not too hard to put /boot-files to windoze fat32 partition also.

Subject: autofs module won't load on startup
Date: Wed, 14 Feb 2001 11:05:21 -0500
Hi,
I have a few machines running RH 6.2 with 2.2.15 kernel which on startup
won't start autofs, even though I have it installed and checked in
ntsysv.
I looked in /var/log/messages and it says autofs didn't start because
the
autofs.o module isn't loaded. If I do a manual "insmod autofs.o" and
then
"service start autofs" it works fine, once the system is booted. If I
grep
/lib/modules/2.2.15/modules.dep, the autofs.o path shows up, so it's not
like depmod doesn't see it. The systems I'm having trouble with had
been
through a few kernel upgrades before I got a hold of them, so there's a
possibility that may have messed something up. Has anyone seen this
behavior before or know how I can fix it?
Thanks for any help,

Solution.
You haven't mentioned which kernel version you're on, but lx-2.2.17 or newer
supports WIN2K (NTFS).
So, you should upgrade or recompile your kernel and install LILO in a standard
manner.
During boot time, first to pop up will be LILO, giving you the choice between
DOS and Linux, and then if you choose DOS, NT loader will emerge giving you
further choice between WINDOWS 2000 and WIN98.
Cheers!
