How can I interrupt the startup sequence such that X doesn't
automatically come up if I can't login after it does in
order to edit anything?
I installed the new xfree86, and have managed to get it
to start X without complaint, but (1) the initial screen
resolution is such that the screen is about 10 X larger
than the actual monitor screen. I can scroll through the
different ones with ctrl-alt-+, but (2) I don't get the usual
Redhat background image with the redhat logo in the upper
left on a blue field behind the KDE login dialog.
When I try to log in, it goes black then returns me to the
same login prompt again. I know it is doing something 'cause
it complains when I give it the wrong password.
I'm thinking KDE or something is not finding what it is
looking for or something else is messed up. I tried
selecting the other desktops (gnome, anotherlevel, etc.)
but no difference.
I tried to do the interactive mode at boot up but nothing
I answer 'n' to keeps X from starting up.
I tried ctrl-alt-backspace at that kde login dialog but
nothing (visibly) happens.
FWIW, here is my Screen section of /etc/X11/XF86Config,
and I posted the full thing at:
http://home.austin.rr.com/johnb/XF86Config.html

HI:-)
So you have 3 HDD ? I am sure you can Install Linux on the one GB disc
with no problems, Linux does not to be on the first HDD in order to
boot.
Also in order to avoid Problems you could just start from a floppy and
install LILO on the floppy ( I think Yast? will ask where to install
lilo...)
One more thing you could disconnect the HDD where your NT is during the
install. :-)
Tip, watch out for the option installation as server _do_ _not_ install
Linux as Server if you leave the NT-HDD in the pc. in server-mode the
installation-tool chooses _all_ HDD's it finds for the installation of
Linux and wipes out any other stuff you have on your disk.
If you have some partition tool you can create some partitions on the
big HDD for Linux to be used, and than use this for /home /usr ( since
those directories are rather large).
I think even the normal MSDOS Fdisk will do the trick ( because SuSE
will format the Drives you allocate to them....) Your large Disc will be
hda ( and the partitions on them are hda1 and so on)
So if you decide to install Linux on some partitions of the hda you have
to be very careful).
I think there is expert-mode during the install that would allow you to
chose all those options.
have a lot of fun <- as the SuSE team would say :-)

My first guess is that either you don't have the DNS specified
correctly, or it can't get to it in order to resolve domain names.
If this is a dual boot, does everything work ok 'on the other side' ?
That would at least indicate that it probably is not a hardware
issue, I think, and is 'just' a set up issue.
Don't know about the text-only web issue, but they might be related
if the images are specified such that DNS is needed?

What about DNS? Does a ping to a genuine ip address work? Try 194.134.5.5
(dns.euro.net), if you don't know ip numbers. If it replies, your internet
connection is allright. Next, try a ping to some website (e.g.
www.linux.org). If this does not reply, you don't have any name servers
configured for your connection. See rc.config.

hm, yes. There are 3 HDs. But I wanted to remove the old SCSI drives
sometime. Just using them for data migration.
So, I cannot remove the HD with NT installed :-((
Sorry that I didn't make this clear...
There are two problems I guess:
1. Primary partition limit
I read in the meantime in a FAQ about partitioning that Linux permits only 4
primary partitions on a HD.
I now have 3 primary partitions on that drive and still have (want) to
create a lot of data partitions.
Well, all additional data partions for NT could go in one Extended partition
(EP), and all data and swap partions for Linux into another EP.
Then I need at least one more PP for Linux boot (which indeed has to be in
the first 1024 Zyl. = 8 GB).
This makes at least 4 PPs and 2 EPs with about 5 or more logical partitions
in each.
Does this work with Linux ?
What would happen ?
2. Configuring Lilo to boot DOS, NT and Linux (or is there only a problem
with Windows 9x, NT, Linux ?).
Ciao,
Harald

Running startx will invoke the X server, but not the display manager (it is
not required). The simplest way to get gdm (or xdm or kdm or whatever..)
running is to boot into run state 5. Do that and it will start
automatically. Otherwise try executing /etc/X11/prefdm - that will start
the default display manager up.

Subject: Re: How to install Linux (Suse) together with NT 4 ...
Date: Sat, 16 Sep 2000 19:24:07 +0200
Hello again.
It seems that I made some errors when installing my system so far.
And the partitions are different than I though they were.
First of all I stupidly set the partition size of the two FAT partitions
(probably due to late night working/installation) to 1028 ! MB - resulting
in 32 KB logical sectors wasting a lot of disk space (e.g. on the NT
partition I copied about 12000 files, 422 MB of the NT CD-ROM using now
almost 700 MB of disk space :-))
But - Windows NT setup created a Extended Partition of 7005 MB.
Maybe I have been lucky that NT without at least (SP3 or SP4?) also cannot
recognize diskspce on IDE drives behind 8 GB - otherwise it would have made
a EP which eats up all the remaining diskspace.
So now DOS fdisk shows me:
Part: C: 1
Status: A
Typ: Pri DOS
Size: 1028 MB
Systen: FAT16
Part: 2
Status:
Typ: Ext DOS
Size: 7005 MB
Systen:
Capacity: 8025 MB !!! This is not even the sum of the 2 partitions !
Logical drive/partition in partition 2
Drive: E:
Size: 1028 MB
Systen: FAT16
If I look into NT Disk-Manager I see:
C: FAT 1028 MB
F: FAT 1028 MB
G: NTFS 2047 MB
Free space: 3930 MB
Free space: 21281 MB
If I add the first 4 I get 8033 MB which is also the correct sum of 7005 and
1028 MB (strange how DOS fdisk calculates :-)
On the other hand 8 GB are 8192 MB.
So, is there a chance to put the Linux boot partition in the remaining 159
MB ?
Or could I use some partitioning tool to change all my partitions
(correcting me stupid errors) so that it look like that (without destroying
the current existing data the)
PP 1000 MB FAT
EP 7000 MB with
LP 1000 MB FAT
LP 2000 MB NTFS
LP 4000 MB NTFS
PP 192 MB
EP 23000 MB with
LP 2000 MB NTFS
... some more
LP 300 MB Linux Swap
LP 2000 MB Linux
... some more
Anybody in here who has experiance with any such tool ?
Sorry for my wrong description of my configuration before.
Thankful for any hint on how I could do all this without repeating all the
installations I did so far.
Ciao,
Harald

Hi Harald :-)
Since I myself really not an expert I only can give a few hints I looked
up this site.
( putting in a search-machine linux &newbie will get some great results
:-))
so the following is a "quote" from the site:
http://www.xmission.com/~howardm/install.html
Many users choose to install Linux alongside Windows 95/98 on a single
hard disc. I
employed the following strategy with great success:
A. Defragment your hard drive in Windows.
B. Use Partition Magic to diminish the size of your current partitions
( FAT 16 or FAT
32 ) yielding free space into which you will install Linux. This
product enables
non-destructive partitioning, meaning that you will not loose data on
your Windows
partitions. The latest version (4.0) permits resizing of Linux native
partitions, which you may want to do in the future. ( J.O: the demo
version only shows what the tool can do but not do the job:-( )
UPDATE AUGUST 1999 : The makers of certain distributions have reached
agreements with Powerquest Corp. , the maker of Partition Magic, to
include
customized versions of the latter product with the distribution. A Boot
Manager is also
included.
Two additional programs, FIPS version 2.0
http://www.igd.fhg.de/~aschaefe/fips/
plus some info on fips
http://www.linuxgazette.com/issue38/veselosky.html
and Partition Resizer v. 1.2.0,
http://members.nbci.com/Zeleps/intro.htm
are available free-of-charge and work on FAT 32 partitions. I do not
have experience with either. Remember to read the relevant product
documentation carefully before you use them. Follow this link to an
article that describes the use of FIPS . FIPS is included with Red Hat
6.0. A thorough understanding of the concept of hard disc partitions-
primary, extended and logical - will serve you well.
=====end of quote====
Harald if you do repartion your HDD then you could create a small Linux
( lemme see boot needs only about 16 MB for the few files it hold)
before the 1024 Cylinder. Also I think booting Linux from a floppy
would still be the best option leaving the MBR untouched and then you
could use a boot loader to boot your SuSE....
have a lot of fun :-)

Subject: X Works with Floppy Only?

Hello All,
I just jury rigged an ALR Quad6 Pentium Pro server to work with
four PPro Overdrive cpu's. Works like a charm. I have two IDE
drives, hda1, hdb1 and one SCA LVD drive at sda1. I loaded
Linux 2.2.16 across the entire system (i.e. no WinBlows stuff) and
got it working very well. I needed to be able to run a couple
of WinBlows apps, which I ordinarily run under WINE successfully,
but I thought I'd try to use VMware 2.0.1 I had sitting around.
The computer booted just fine under LILO as there weren't any
DOS/WinBlows partitions around.
I didn't like VMware as it is still toooooo slow for me and decided
to go back to having a vestigial WinBlows drive. I could run the
few apps I need from there with DosEmu and WINE. Suffice it to
say I've had those apps running with no problem before.
Now here is the kicker. Normally I would load WinBlows into a
machine
on one drive and then use Slackware 7.1 to install Linux on another
drive.
I did the above installation in reverse. That is I installed Linux first
and then decided to go back to a dual boot system. I wiped out the hda1
drive as I didn't have anything on it any ways and removed LILO with
lilo -u and then fdisk /mbr under dos. I DID save the boot images to
floppy!
I then installed WinBlows after using dos to make drives C, D, E and
F. I stuck Loadlin in on the C:\ drive and my usual bat command
in \DOS to boot to Linux from the kernel image I'd stick in the D:\
drive. I set WinBlows to give me the boot screen so I could get into
dos and use my bat command to invoke loadlin to start Linux as I
have done for eons.
This is where it REALLY gets weird. When I used loadlin to boot
from the C:\ prompt, Linux boots just fine, whatever kernel I chose.
Now after I have logged in and use startx to boot the X GUI the
screen goes blank. I have a Stealth III 540 32mb PCI card with
the appropriate XFree 3.3.6 driver that worked when I had only Linux
on the machine.
I have to kill the window to get the prompt back. FINALLY, if I
take the kernel image I tried above to boot, use the dd command to stick
it on a floppy and boot from the floppy, I can configure x using
XFree86Setup and X will work just fine.
In short I can get X to work if I boot the image from a floppy but
not if I boot it from the dos partition. I also need to mention if
I boot from the dos partition using Loadlin and then do the
XFree86Setup routine, the GUI locks up on trying to start the console
at the end of the setup cycle.
This is funky. I wonder if it has anything to do with the fact
I had tried to load Linux first and then WinBlows. I did eventually
wipe out
my Linux drive and left WinBlows on /hda and reloaded Linux and I
still have the same result. Boots fine from an image on a floppy and X
will
run. Use the same image from the dos partition with Loadlin and the
system
boots to Linux but will not configure X. I did try booting from the
floppy image configuring X getting it to work and then booted from the
dos partition. The GUI would still lock-up. Any ideas from gurus
would be appreciated. I tried searching the archives but it is very
hard to express this problem in a small Subject line.
I would like to be able to boot a kernel from dos as I have done in
the past and wonder if there is anything I can do to remedy this
goofy situation. I suppose as a last resort I could try and wipe
the whole machine out and restart the process by loading WinBlows
first and then Linux.
Best regards,
Kurt Savegnago
