new to linux (hence the newbie group...) trying to set up a cvs server. ive
got cvs installed and a repository created ive the necessary (i think) lines
to the /etc/HOSTNAME, /etc/inetd.conf, /etc/services,
/myrepos/CVSROOT/passwd files in order to use the pserver login method. i
have also named the machine cvs. when i try to login to cvs from an nt box
with the following method:
cvs -d server:ryan@cvs:/usr/local/cvs login
password:********
i get the following error message:
Unknown host cvs.

if i try to login with pserver from the linux box itself i get a broken pipe
signal error.

any help please? ive been on this for days now.

thanks,

Yes and yes.

I have 2 software raid 0 (root + 2nd raid in /mnt) on mandrake 7.2.

Install in expert mode, then you get diskdrake with extended functions.
Select the partition, and put "Linux RAID" for TYPE.
Then add each partition to the raid.
Then select the raid, and chose reiserfs as filesystem, and you are done.

You don't mention where hda5 is mounted, this is the most important piece
of information needed to answer this question. Also, how much free space
is available on the filesystem? The output of a "df" will answer both
these questions. If it's a filesystem that can easily be unmounted
(/home, /var, /opt, etc.) then it's simply a matter of going into
single-user mode, unmounting the filesystem, resizing it, carving out a
new partition, making a filesystem on the new partition, adding an entry
in fstab for the new filesystem, and coming back up to your normal
runlevel.

Or the if explicit resizing doesn't work for some reason, then backup the
entire contents of the filesystem on hda5 somewhere else, fdisk the hell
out of it, split it into two partitions, make new fs's on the two
partitions, let fstab know what's up, then come back up to your normal
runlevel. Piece O' Cake.

If it's a more pesky filesystem that the system depends on at all times
like /usr, then your best bet is to boot off a floppy recovery system of
some sort, then slice and dice in one of the manners outlined above then
boot your normal system.

Be paranoid! Backup everything that this operation could hose first!

Subject: start NTP
From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] (Victor S. Miller)

What do I have to do to make sure that ntp starts up when I start
Linux? I've noticed that I have things like /etc/init.d/ntpd around,
and I can start it by saying (as root) /etc/init.d/ntpd start

However, I'd like this to be automatic. I couldn't find any mention
of this in linuxconf. I realize that I could put this in rc.local,
but, since there already are things in, for example, /etc/rc0.d like

K10ntpd which is a symbolic link to /etc/init.d/ntpd I would guess
that things are "almost" set up for this. Any help is appreciated.

When is it crashing? Is it before it starts asking about what drivers to
load? You might try the "safe" images, they do less probing to
automatically determine what's out there. Then maybe you can just bypass
the CDROM and do a net install. I don't have much experience with laptops,
so that's the best thing I can think of.

Correct the actual scripts live in /etc/rc.d/init.d, you've figured
that out. Those scripts are what actually do the work.

The series of symbolic links in /etc/rc.d/rc.n, with n being 0
through 6, call the 'real' scripts. By adjusting the symbolic links
in your runlevel of choice, you control which services run and don't
run for that particular level.

Generally, you want to link

/etc/rc.d/rc.3/S50ntpd to /etc/rc.d/init.d/ntpd

Judging by the location of your startup script, you are not using
RedHat nor Mandrake. You can use "update-rc.d" to automate the ntpd
startup and shutdown.

Not all EXP CDROM works. You may want to look at the supported PCMCIA
CDROM:
http://pcmcia-cs.sourceforge.net/ftp/SUPPORTED.CARDS

If your PCMCIA CDROM is not supported, you should eject the PCMCIA
card to see whether you can boot up.

I would suhhest that you try make bzImage instead of make zImage, that
way you get a compressed kernel with a reasonable size. Mine (2.4.1)
came out at 850 kb (with all the netfilter modules made)

good luck

Subject: Searching small linux-distribution on diskettes (images)
Date: Wed, 14 Feb 2001 22:44:53 +0100

Hi,

I am searching for a small linux distribution which comes on diskettes (or
diskette-images ;-), to install on a i386 Notebook with 8MB RAM and 128MB
HDD. It should come with a nice shell and developing tools like vi (better
vim), gcc and perl.
I should be installable to disk (i.e. don't run from diskette into RAM-disk
ans should run on native ext2fs not UMSDOS).

Someone has an idea where to get such a distribution?
(to download...)

Thanks for Help!

Best Regards,
   Atmosfear

You can change the limit in /usr/src/linux.../include/linux/limits.h
file and recompile the kernel. Default in Redhat 6.2 is 256.
