Symon at http://symon.da.ru/ will let you have up to 20 os's ,and let
you boot with any 4 of 36 partitions of your choice in any order.
And it does this without a dedicated partition.
Check it out, good stuff.

Make sure you disable DGA in your XF86Config - it power-off's my monitor every
time.
In your 'Section "Modules"' part of your config, make sure the following lines
are found
SubSection "extmod"
Option "omit XFree86-DGA"
EndSubSection
You will still get hardware acceleration.

There are three problems when I compiled the kernel 2.2.17
for redhat 6.2 linux. First problem is I don't know how to
generate the module-info file for the new kernel. The second
problem is I cann't mount the windows 98 disks any more, the
new kernel complain the major and minor device number of the
windows partitions, although I selected the dos and vfat file
system support when configuring the kernel. The last problem is
I could not find the sound support module for the ESS SOLO
from the new kernel, the original kernel from redhat can
support this sound card.
Thank you in advance for your insights!

Subject: X11 and Netscape questions

Hi,
I'm trying to configure something like the MS Windows (sorry, I said the
forbidden word) Active Desktop by simply running Netscape in Fullscreen
(actually over-screen because there is no kiosk mode) behind my other
applications, so I have a Webpage instead of a background image. I am
switching Users with su to have seperate configuration Files for my
Desktop Netscape and my usual Netscape. At the moment its looking pretty
cool!
I just have one problem:
I am using Fvwm95 as a window-manager (basically only the Taskbar and a
clock). Netscape is started as part of the initFunction (+ "I" Exec
Netscape &....). Of course I dont want my desktop-Netscape to show up in
the Taskbar, which is easily changed by putting the line 'Style
"Netscape" WindowListSkip' in the ~/.fvwm95rc file. The problem is,
this also removes all other Netscape-occurances from the Taskbar (Not a
good thing). I have been trying solutions by calling stuff like
'netscape -xrm "Netscape*WindowListSkip: Yes/No"' but they had no
effect, I guessed beforehand they were wrong, but I don't know how these
X-Resources work (and yes, I've read the docs). Another thing I tried is
calling Netscape from a script (eg 'adesktop') and then adding 'Style
"adesktop" WindowListSkip' to ~/.fvwm95rc, didn't work either, because
Style "NAME" means the class name not the file name (damn).....
does anyone know a way of solving my problem ??
I've also got other not so important problems:
1. The Taskbar shows a Start-Button (like in Windows) even if I remove
all lines about the Menu (If you click on it nothing happens), is there
a way of removing it totally ???
2. A second thing is I want don't want to be able to left-click on my
Netscape-Desktop (I am using Frames), can anyone help me on that ?
3. I don't want to be able to quit Netscape by pressing Alt+q
thanks a lot,

What I have:
A ethernet consisting 2 computers, connected using a cross-over cable.
(no hub)
A desktop w/ RH6.2 installed and self-configured IP address
169.254.44.99
A notebook w/ Win98 installed and can connect to the desktop by
telneting or ftp to 169.254.44.99.
What I want but not able to do:
1. Sharing the cd-rom as ftp or http from my desktop to the network.
2. Install RH6.2 on my notebook (which doesn't have a cd-rom).
I tried to use "bootnet.img" for FTP installation, but dunno what to
enter in "IP Address", "Netmask", "Default gateway" and "Primary
nameserver". If I enter all the four fields with 169.254.44.99, it
doesn't work. :{
Thanks very much for you help.

After I have install the Linux, I have found that some files such as the
inetd.conf has a modified date and access date19-Sept 11:45am, which is 12
hrs faster. And this make me cannot do any in the linuxconf. The linuxconf
always gives me the message that "The file /etc/inetd.conf as revision date
in the future. This probably means that you system time is wrong or as been
wrong at some point." And it also gives me some other message about the same
thing for other files with date 19-Sept.
Could someone please kindly help me to solve the problem?

A few problems while setting up Linux Red Hat on 2 machines. Hope someone
can help. both pc's were set up in the same way using an identical startup
disk and cd with the same choices made.
1] On 1 pc the x-windows and xconfigurator are located & run from
/usr/X11R6/bin/ and on the other they are located in /usr/X11/bin/ . on
the latter pc I can run it from ./X11/bin/ and ./X11R6/bin/ . the confusing
thing is that my book [ Linux for dummies.. say no more ] that I got the cd
with Linux on states that this should be run from /usr/bin/X11/ . This
subdirectory does not appear to exist????? Well all I can say is that this
has completely fox'd me. Any advice out there?
2] I read somewhere [ naturally I cannot find the page on the internet now
and like a fool I didn't bookmark it ] that my Voodoo 3 3dfx would be
recognised by xfree86. It gave instructions on doing everything necessary to
get this working. I think I have done it correctly but can anyone point me
in the correct direction for the page again?
3] [ Oh don't I go on ] i have a Samsung 570B TFT screen and when trying to
launch X-Windows it goes through the motions and gives me a message on the
screen that it cannot find a screen. A bit bizaar for a first time Linux
user but I guess I didnt program it right. have tried a multitude of
different ways but getting nowhere. HELP!!!!

I have an application (curses based) that is accessed on
remote terminals connected to the server thru a multi port
serial controller (which defines several tty's in
/etc/inittab).
When the system boots, I want to be able to login specific
users and run this application automatically without any
user input i.e. the curses based program shows up on the
remote station ready for user input.
I am wondering how this could be done using the
/etc/inittab and /etc/gettydefs files.
TIA.

Date: Mon, 18 Sep 2000 17:30:46 GMT
I can't get Linux-Mandrake 6.0 to install into my system. When I try to
run the install from the boot up disk, or from the AUTOBOOT command in
DOSUTILS off the CD, it goes through all the normal startup text and
then freezes. This is the last text I see on my screen:
checking command line arguments... done
checking for NFS root filesystem...no
trying to remount root filesystem read write... done
checking for writeable /tmp... yes
running install...
At this point the hard drive light stays on and the install never goes
any further.
I also have Ret Hat Linux 5.0, and when I install that from that CD it
goes through all this and takes me into the setup menu with no problems.
This is going to be a clean install with no other Operating Systems on a
system I know that works fine. I used Windows NT on this for awhile
before I decided to give Linux a try. Hard drive tests fine, can be
formatted and partitioned (with DOS), and has no bad sectors.
Can anybody help me with this?

Subject: Problems when compiling kernel
Date: Mon, 18 Sep 2000 14:55:06 -0400
Hi, all,
I need help recompiling the kernel.
I am using Redhat 6.2 with kernel 2.2.14. I thought it sounds not bad
to make a kernel
which only support the hardwares that I have.
I followed instructions in the README file in /usr/src/linux. This is
what I did.
make xconfig, make dep, make clean, make zImage ,
make modules, make modules_install
However, LILO was saying the new zImage "is too big", although is much
smaller
than the previous one.
Anyway I tried to reboot the new kernel. I got thousands of lines of
rubbish message like
"unresolved symbol in /lib/modules/xxx...".
I thought I had got new kernel working because the contents in dmesg
changed a lot and
I was no longer informed about nonexisting things like scsi devices.
The new kernel caused two anoying problems. The first is now I got much
less
free memory. (1 or 2 M,previously I got about 30M).
The second is the IDE led is always on. Is this harmful to the hard
disk?
Thanks.

I have the same problem as the original questioner, except that I've
already put RedHat Linux 6.2 on my system but can't get it to dual
boot.
I've got a Hewlett-Packard AMDK6-2 w/8 Gig HD. I've partitioned the
drive to have 5.5 Gb DOS/Win98, and the remaining 2.5 Gig as Linux
Partitions for system, swap, and user using Partition Magic which also
installed Boot Magic. I then installed RedHat Linux 6.2 in the Linux
partitions.
Now when I boot the computer, it always boots up in the OS system I
last used. If I reboot from LINUX, it boots into LILO but the only
option(s) LILO offers are Linux. I can boot into Win98 from a rescue
floppy, but then when I reboot, I get the Boot Magic screen: it offers
both Win98 and Linux but if I choose LINUX the computer hangs up on
the message, "preparing machine to load Linux." Only Win98 will boot
properly from Boot Magic. I need to boot from a Linux boot disk in
order to load Linux. Then, I'm back to booting into LILO with only
Linux offered.
How do I get this thing to actually boot into the OS of my choice from
either boot loading program? LILO or Boot Magic, I don't care which
one works as long as I can get one of them to work. Thanks.
