Perhaps you should submit a bug report to Micro$oft. This isn't a linux
problem, its a windoze problem.

If you install Slack, the A and N series are still designed to be floppy
size, to allow the installation of the OS and networking capability from
floppy. Then the remainder can be installed over the network. Obviates the
problem of either floppy or network card. Use some ancient version of
Slack like 3.3 to keep the number of floppies smaller. Later use a utility
like slackUp to upgrade the install over the network to the desired level.

The only thing I can suggest with this problem is to stay away from any
modem with the rockwell chipset. In my experiance rockwell based modems
have provided nothing but problems as well as inferior connections and
transfers.
I would suggest that if you have the open slots, to go with an internal
modem and two decent manufacturers to look into are AOpen and U.S.
Robotics/3Com.

You will find that many linux archives are gzipped tar files. They will
either have the extension .tar.gz or .tgz. Basically, tar and gzip are two
utilities that make it easier to send multiple files. tar (originally used to
create tape backups) basically takes multiple files and creates one big file
that contains all of the files. gzip compresses a file. Used in combination,
these utilities create a single compressed file that contains a lot of little
files. In order to extract this archive, put it in a temporary folder and
type:
tar zxvf <filename>
the options to tar 'zxvf' tell tar that it is a gzipped file to extract. The
files inside the archive will scroll accross your screen and there should now
be a subdirectory that contains the netscape programs. There is probably a
README file in there explaining the rest of the install.

Cancel that question: I just got it working. It's easier than I thought.
Just bring up the interface you *don't want to be the default first.
Then bring up the default interface and do route adds for the
non-default interface. Works really well.

Subject: El Torito Questions
Date: Tue, 19 Sep 2000 20:22:16 GMT
I'm attempting to create my own bootable Linux CD using the El Torito
spec and mkisofs.
I've created my boot floppy following the HOWTO directions:
http://www.linuxdoc.org/HOWTO/Bootdisk-HOWTO/x696.html
I created two floppy boot disks, one uses LILO and the other doesn't.
My root file system will be on the CD.
The boot floppies work fine. I can put the floppy in the floppy drive
and a CD with the file system in the CD tray and the floppies bootup and
used the CD as the root system.
The problem occurs when I use mkisofs to create an Eltorito iso image
and create a bootable CD. When I boot the CD the OS starts looking at
the floppy drive for stuff. Of course everything is on the CD and there
is no floppy in the floppy drive. It shouldn't be looking at the floppy
drive, correct?
The command I use to create the ISO image is:
mkisofs -D -R -v -d -L -b boot/bootable.img -c boot/boot.catalog -o
/mnt/other/img.iso /mnt/linux2
I use CD Creator Deluxe (Windows) to burn the ISO image.
What am I doing wrong? Why does my boot CD think it needs to access the
floppy drive?
Thanks for any help.

hi
actually its real easy ;) you download the tarbal in which the
application is in and then do the following (usually)
1) tar xzf stuff.tar.gz
2) cd /stuff
3) cat README , if it exists (there usually is a readme)
4) cat INSTALL , there usually is install docs which will usually tell
you something like this
5)./configure in /stuff
6)if the configure works ok, then type make, then sometimes make check
7)if you get past make check , then type make install to install the
prog.
8)then from a console or xterm window, type the name of the
executable.
The point im making here is that in 99% of the applications, there is
usually sufficient documentation to compile the application on
whichever platform or computer you are running. steps 5,6 and 7 are
the compile part ;)))
good luck ;))
