I remember RH6.1 hanging on me just after all the
packages were loaded.
RH6.2 didn't, so I blame the distribution.

For the prospect of nothing better to do
I installed Mandrake 7.2 which actualy setup
my Gforce2 card with generic svga drivers and gave me a
GUI. This is something RH 7 never managed to do, despite
both dists using X 4.0.1.
Go figure??

From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] (Scott Gardner)
Subject: Four hard drives, one RAID controller, Windows and Linux--Where to start??
Date: Sun, 18 Feb 2001 03:19:13 GMT

I just purchased a copy of RH 7.0, and will be installing it on my
computer shortly. I'm trying to decide what route to take as far as
where/how to install it on my computer.

Here are my requirements for where I want to end up:

1) Dual-boot between Linux and Windows ME
2) Sufficient space on the Linux side of the house to run the
operating system and try out different applications.

Here's what I have now:
1) A Promise Fastrak 100 RAID controller with two IBM 45Gb ATA100
drives, set up as a single 90Gb virtual drive (RAID 0) and allocated
completely to WinME

2) Two extra hard drives lying around, one 8Gb and one 10Gb. Both are
currently empty.

3) All of my applications and data are fully backed up and restorable.
(Backup medium is CD-R, so while I can restore it all, it may take a
little while.)

I'm trying to decide how best to configure the hard drives for my
upcoming Linux installation. This will be my first hands-on
experience with installing Linux, so consider my (lack of) experience
and abilities when you answer, please. (grin).

Promise, Inc. has drivers on their site for using the Fastrak100 RAID
controller with RH 7.0, but I have no evidence if or how well they
work, not knowing anyone else that's running Linux with this card.

The way I see it, I can leave the RAID array that I have alone, and
install a second RAID 0 array for Linux, using the 8Gb and 10Gb
drives, giving me a virtual 16Gb drive for RH 7.0 to install to. This
is assuming that the RH drivers for the RAID card work as promised.
(The RAID card supports four drives, so no problems there.)

Or, I can install one or both of the extra hard drives on my
motherboard's built-in controller and use it/them for Linux
exclusively. Question is, will I still have to install the RH drivers
for the RAID card even if I don't plan to install Linux on any of the
hard drives being controlled by the RAID card?

Third option, wipe my two 45Gb hard drives, set them up on the
motherboard's built-in controller as two separate drives, remove the
RAID card from the system, and use one drive for Windows and one drive
for Linux. This would leave me a little short of space on the Windows
side of the house, and I really don't think I need 45Gb to evaluate
Linux, but the option is there. Also, I've gotten spoiled having the
RAID 0 in Windows, and would rather not lose it. I'm really only
considering this option if the Linux install absolutely refuses to
co-exist on the computer with the RAID card installed.

Lastly, I could re-size the 90Gb RAID array I already have, and try to
install Linux on the newly-available space. I have about 60Gb free on
the array, but I don't have any programs that will non-destructively
shrink the RAID partition, so I'd rather not go this route.

Any help would be appreciated. I'm getting excited about setting up
Linux. I would just slick both hard drives and install Linux
exclusively, since I think this would be the best way to learn, but
due to some home networking issues, I need to have the dual-boot
feature between WinME and Linux.

Thanks a million,
Scott Gardner

I could fax using efax and print spooler in RH6.2 but I can't fax using
efax and print spooler in RH7.0
I modified the instructions from the efax man page for RH7.0, but I
still can't get it to work.

This command does not work for RH7.0
       (2) Edit /etc/printcap and add an entry such as:

              fax:lp=/dev/null:sd=/var/spool/fax:if=/usr/bin/faxlpr:

to define a printer called "fax". Print files will be
spooled to the
/var/spool/fax (sd=) directory and then piped to the
/usr/bin/faxlpr filter
       (if=).

Here is fax section for my /etc/printcap for RH7.0 but still does not
work for efax

fax:\
        :lp=/dev/null:\
        :sd=/var/spool/fax:\
        :if=/usr/bin/faxlpr:

Is there something I have to do to make it work?

Subject: Should I even *hope* to use this scanner with Linux?
Date: Sun, 18 Feb 2001 03:23:30 GMT

I'm getting ready to install RH 7.0, and am wondering if I have a
snowball's chance of being able to use my scanner under Linux when I'm
done.
The scanner is a Pacific Image Electronics Scanace 1230S. It
came with an ISA 16-bit proprietary SCSI card. I have the most recent
Windows TWAIN driver, and it works fine under Windows, but the
manufacturer has no Linux support mentioned on its website.
This isn't a really popular scanner, but will Linux apps be
able to treat it as a generic SCSI scanner? Will I have to track down
Linux drivers for the proprietary SCSI controller card? The way I
suspect it will work is that unless I can somehow get RH to recognize
the card and scanner as generic devices, I'm probably SOL. Any
thoughts?

Thanks,
Scott

You set the EDITOR environment variable to the path to the editor you
want to use. Then F4 puts you there. It's in the manual. G.

Is the hard drive your installing it on the third hard drive? Because sone
linux systems can only be installed on one of the first two hard drives

ARE YOU INSANE!!! :) Well get sane from the following website.
http://panda.mostang.com/sane/sane-backends.html
http://www.munton.demon.co.uk/sane/
Your scanner is untested. Try it and inform them if it works.

Try "text expert" to at least install the text version of Redhat, and patch
it with the latest version of Xfree86 to get your graphic card working from

some programmes look at the VISUAL environment variable as well.

I have just recently downloaded CorelLinux. I have been trying out
numerous distributions to find one I like. So far I have installed RedHat,
and Debian sucessfully. My problem is after I reboot the machine it hits
LILO and displays "LI". I have looked on Corel's site and it said
something about installing the bootable portion under 1024 cylinder on my
harddrive. To add problems to the mix I have a dual processor motherboard
with only one processor. Now I don't think the problem is that, but the
fact that the installation does not give me enough installtion options. I
have two SCSI 2 Gig harddrives. I tell Corel to auto-partition and take
over the harddrive and it only gives me the option of making partitions on
one drive. I have tried to manually partition, but every time I enter in
the size of the partition it resets the partition to the maxsize, which
means I can't install the root directory under the 1024 cylinder. Is even
trying this distribution worth all this trouble? I really thought that
this was supposed to be the easiest distribution. Any help would be
greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I'm new to Linux, but not to Unix. This has got me stumped.

I completed the normal installation procedure that comes

up when I boot from the CD that comes in the Mandrake 7.2 box.

After the post-installation reboot however I get a blank

screen and then the text "stage1 stage2 failed line 127"

on the screen. The system then reboots itself and

repeats the process all over again. I haven't been able to find

any documentation that explains the "failed line 127" error.

I am using a SuperMicro 370DLE and a Maxtor 20Gb ATA100

disk. I get the same behavior with an IBM 40Gb disk. Installing

using lnx4win failed because of an unspecified error creating the

loopback file.

I feel like I've hit the end of the road here. Can anyone offer a
suggestion?

Thanks,

Perry

If it's scsi, almost certainly yes. But you probably have to toss the
proprietary half-scsi card and put the scanner on a real scsi controller.
You can get symbios or ncr -based ones for $20-$30 in the shops.

How? You have an ata100 controller and they are not supported by
the install kernels! Give your hardware details and layout.

Looks like the boot loader fails to load the kernel. Not surprising if
the bios can't handle calls to load from beyond cylinder 1023 or to
load from anywhere but the first disk.

(However, the reboot suggests that the kernel itself did load,
and rebooted).

Presumably the same reason. No support for your controller?

I can set up basic masq with ipchains for a home network, but this is a

The Nt guys use "bridging" this is the current temporary configuration

On the firewall :With the software doing the configuration they told me that
the nic card attached to the switch is set to 1.1.1.1 which they said
disables the card, and an static ip from our ISP is set to the nic card
which is connectted to the hub.

On the ftp server is an IP address which is from our ISP and be accessed
from the internet

I looked at bridging, ipchains etc and it feels that I am running in circles
can anyone point me in the right direction.
